After seven years of trying to rebuild the iconic retailer Sears, hedge-fund manager Edward S. Lampert reversed course on Thursday, announcing that Sears Holdings Corp. will unload more than 1,200 stores in an effort to raise up to $770 million of much-needed cash.

Many on Wall Street interpreted the move as the beginning of the breakup of the company. Sears on Thursday reported a loss of more than $3 billion for 2011, and same-store sales have fallen for six straight years.

When I was a tiny little girl, 5 and under, there was a store called Sears Surplus that was a seperate building from the regular Sears, does anyone else remember those or was my city special?

Used to be able to buy darn near anything at Sears, up to and including a house. Even spawned a whole style, known as the Craftsman House.

Yup, that's where that name came from for that style of home.

Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

I've shopped at our local Sears. For YEARS I've been wondering how it stays alive; the store has been virtually empty, the checkers are either elderly ladies or Hispanics, some of whose grasp of English is less than desired, and neither seems to know much about where anything is located, etc. I haven't seen a young cashier or other employee there for over a decade. I would guess ours will be one of those being closed.

Ergo, doesn't surprise me, and it's been that way for WELL over ten years, so has little or nothing to do with the economy. That's just convenient idiocy...not even mentioning that the economy IMPROVING doesn't mean things won't still go out of business; we're not "well" yet by far, just getting better.

I hated going into Sears...whether it's the lighting or something, the color red in there is a particular kind of red that screams "cheap!" to me. I only went there because we have few retail outlets that are inexpensive; we keep losing those that set up here because most people either go North or into the City to shop. Mostly we're left with upscale places like Nordstrom and Macy's, which I will not set FOOT in! But I'll miss Sears; it and driving North to Target are the only places I've been able to find relatively inexpensive towels and bedding. Such is life.

Wanna go back in time, anyone remembe when Sears catalog was virtually the only KIND of Sears? It served rural poulations for decades, I'm guessing it just hasn't kept up with the times.

Sears is actually one of the few stores in our Mall that still does decent business.
