A priest who assisted Monsignor William Lynn investigate clergy sex abuse claims testified Tuesday that it was not the archdiocese's policy to contact law enforcement or other victims of abuse.

"Our legal counsel said there was not a requirement to report," Monsignor Michael McCulken told jurors.

The defense called its first three witnesses Tuesday in the child sexual abuse and conspiracy trial of two Philadelphia priests, after the prosecution rested last week.

On trial are the Rev. James Brennan, who is accused of the attempted rape of a 14-year-old, and Monsignor William Lynn, who is accused of knowingly allowing dangerous priests to continue in the ministry in roles in which they had access to children.

Lynn is the first high-ranking church figure charged with child endangerment for allegedly shuffling predator priests from parish to parish.

Defrocked priest Edward Avery was due to also go on trial with Brennan and Lynn, but pleaded guilty in March to involuntary sexual deviate sexual intercourse after admitting to sexually assaulting a 10-year-old altar boy during the 1998-1999 school year at St. Jerome Parish.

Lynn, who was the secretary for clergy under former Philadelphia Archbishop Cardinal Anthony Bevilacqua, is accused of knowingly allowing Avery and Brennan access to children despite allegations of sexual abuse of minors. From 1992 until 2004, Lynn was responsible for investigating reports that priests had sexually abused children.

Both Brennan and Lynn have pleaded not guilty.More at http://www.cnn.com/2012/05/22/us/pennsylvania-priests-abuse/index.html

Like I said in the other thread, there are some we could send over there who seem to have similar attitudes about women... (I'm angry enough that it's not completely a snark this time...)

People like that I'd love to see get run over with a car, and then sit there and watch them bleed to death and say "Sorry, I don't really feel a need to report this..."

Visualization helps. It's not much but it's all I got

There was some sorta religious figure in Lafayette, IN the other day who put cameras in air fresheners in the girls bathroom, and I remember thinkin' for a split second "Well, at least it was the girl's bathroom, for once." Geez, and the comments were even worse! I don't see how anybody could take their kids to a church these days. I'd spend all my time praying my kid wouldn't be molested. How do you say "Eh, it won't happen to MY church! MY church is special and perfect!"

The essential problem comes from the denial of their own humanity - for the more you defy and deny your own humanity, the more twisted in which the form it will finally express itself, and it WILL express itself, muchlike a tree root breaking a sidewalk.
This is why most of these puritannical dumbfucks wind up so screwed up, especially when you add in the abject and purile IDIOCY of the notion that suffering is good for people.

Maybe if folks embraced humanity instead of denyin it, they wouldn't be so messed up, yanno ?

The police are exactly who should have been told when this first started happening, so it wouldn't continue happening.

I assume you're my pal until you let me know otherwise.

Amen, Frem. Exactly why the power organized religion gives people is the main reason I hate it so much.

I know that here in California, there's what's called a " mandated reporter" LAW- people who work with children and who even suspect, even get a hint of child abuse, are REQUIRED to report it up thru channels, and higher ups are REQUIRED to call the cops. I would be surprised if Pennsylvania doesn't have a similar law.

'Course it didn't work out too well here- Ol' Rog Mahoney tried to cover up a major scandal here in LA and got caught. Nobody went to jail, as I recall, but it cost them Millions of dollars to fix, and Ol' Rog had to get out of town quick, heading off the retirement in disgrace.

But I do find it interesting that the Catholic church considers church policy superior to state law, not to mention ethical behavior. But that's an old argument, been done many times before.

E-T-A: I checked... Pennsylvania law does apply to "members of the clergy", and their superiors, and does mandate reporting of complaints or suspicions.

'Course it didn't work on JoePa or Penn State, either...

Shit...if it's the law, why isn't anyone going after them?
