Except that studies show that Fox viewers know less about current events than people who watch no news at all. People who watch The Daily Show are better-informed and can answer more news questions correctly than Fox viewers, and that annoys Rappy, greatly.

The truth always does.

Is there a YouTube clip of it? Because Wulfie doesn't read; he gets his info only via vidclip.

Poor, deluded Wulfie.

He tries, he really does. But he doesn't even understand his own refrences enough to get that he undermines himself.

In this case, in the story which he refrences - there really were four lights - it was the claim otherwise that was propoganda.

So, yes, Wulfie - you're right. The librul media (I have to chuckle at the simplicity of those who buy that) says there are four lights - because there really are four lights.

You're adorable. Does it hurt, being that stupid?

It's not 'simplistic ' for anyone to acknowledge that the media are indeed Left leaning. I find it funny that those who deny such feel the need to insultingly claim that anyone who says the Media are liberal to be 'simple'.

There ARE four lights. The media is trying to tell us that there are only 3 lights. And as strong and proud as Jean-Luc Picard is, even he, at the end, admits that he was on the verge of agreeing with his captors, and saying there are only 3 lights.

Funny how you don't get that, Storybook. Guess the message was missed on you. Pity.

Excellent, Riona (and Magons, for catching it first). It WOULD be Wulf who would only know about the Star Trek version. As with so many morality tales and great movies, and as just about every long-running TV series did, Trek stole the concept from 1984 and ran with it:

Everything old is new again (and Wulf only finds out about it through his love of "heroes"). I kinda like that they do that, as it always brings things back to the conscionsness of the new generations things which previous generations got. I kinda resent the simplistic way they do it sometimes, or how they bend it, but I never minded immediately recognizing where a plot came from.

Of course, the irony IS that the right's favorite "news media" is actually a propaganda tool of Murdoch and the right itself, as has been shown over and over and over. Other media certainly does the same thing, but not to the blatant degree FauxNews does, and THEY usually get called on it and someone gets fired. Righties only watch FauxNews for the most part, so they buy into the "four lights" far more than anyone else, so to use it as an example against the left is hilarious.

Also, of course, the concept has nothing to do with media, but with torture. So is he trying to say the "left-wing media" is TORTURING people into believing there are four lights, or four fingers? Kind of a weird comparison; I think if he'd really tried, and had anything but his vast store of fiction to pick from, he could have done better.

Wonder what Raptor's "never mind" means? Did he realize where the plot actually came from, or that Wulf isn't making a point about indoctrination, but about torture?

All in all, just a thread for our righties to jump on and agree with each other and slap each other on the back, which is why I ignored it, figuring "let them have their fun", until Riona brought up the original. Well done, Riona!

Where can one see this ' FAUX ' news of which you speak ? Is it sorta like The Onion? I've heard of FOX, which matches the description of what Robert Murdoch owns. Unless your typing skills truly are so poor, where as you meant to type FOX instead of FAUX, or 'in fact' instead of 'in fack '?

Yes, FOX news is a small part of the media. And one which hasn't been around for very long, unlike CBS,NBC, ABC, The NYTimes, LA Times, or even CNN.

And Cavetroll, funny! As CNN was founded in Atlanta, which is also the home office of Coca-Cola, it figures they'd prop up Pepsi.

Good catch on the typo. That's one in a row for you.

But who is Robert Murdoch? Is he Rupert's smarter brother? Or are your typing skills so poor that you meant to type RUPERT instead of "Robert"?

When I refer to FauxNews, I am of course talking about your beloved "FOX". And yes, it's sorta like The Onion, in that they use actual words to describe things. The Onion tends to be closer to the truth in most cases, though. Research shows that those who watch Fox are less informed about current events than those who watch no news at all, and a good deal less informed than those who get their news from The Daily Show.

But since they're entirely slanted to the right, of course you find them to be the only reliable news source. Well, until you have to backpedal and claim that they aren't "news" at all, but "entertainment".

"A small part of the media," and "one which hasn't been around for very long." Great. So you're saying you give a pass to MSNBC and Huffington Post, right? After all, compared to Fox, they're even smaller, and also haven't been around very long.

Huh. From the looks of things, you're completely wrong.

And now you're trying to claim that you're "still right".

So how many lights does that make it? Are you saying that 2+2=THREE? Or are you now saying that the number of lights doesn't matter, and that it's whatever you say it is, and that's all that matters?

It's okay for you to admit that you were wrong.

I've never actually watched Star Trek, it's not something that interests me. But, I do live and breathe tvtropes, so I've heard this one before.

My understanding is that Captain Picard was being held captive by some nasties, who were torturing him unto the breaking point to try to get his mind pliable. Their test was that they would flash four lights, and force him to believe there were five.

Captain Picard manages to resist to an extent, even insists there are only four lights. But later on, he admits, in a quiet despair, that at one point, his mind tricked him into seeing five despite his protestations.

Kind of depressing.

I thought this thread was based on the "how many lights are there" meme. You and Wulfie say there are four, not three, not five, but FOUR. And when I point out that you got the details wrong, you say I'm quibbling.

So you're just coming right out and admitting that it really doesn't matter if someone says there are three, four, five, nine, a eleventy-billion lights, none of that matters?

Is that what you're saying?

Or you insinuating that when FauxNews gets the facts and details wrong, they're being "truthy"? Like how when you get things spectacularly wrong, you're not "lying", but if anyone else gets the tiniest thing off by a bit, they're blatantly lying?

Is that your message in this?

You keep insisting that you're completely right, but you've been shown to be completely wrong twice in two posts. So if we're to believe you're "completely" anything, we have to believe that you're completely full of crap.

Jean Luc Picard accurately states that there are 4 lights.

The tormentors tried to make him think there were 5 lights.

Much as the MSM tries to tell the public ( minus the painful use of torture ) that what we SEE isn't what we really see.

That's pretty much the message here. Sorry it doesn't register w/ your feeble mind, Kwickie.

Now, back to your crayons and coloring book.

That's particularly hilarious, coming from someone who can't reliably count to five!

"I've never actually watched Star Trek, it's not something that interests me.

Kind of depressing."

Exactly.

Yet, DESPITE the constant attempts at brainwashing, DESPITE the constant haranguing and bitching and whining from the liberals/progressives/socialists/communists...

DESPITE the lies, DESPITE the propaganda.............

THERE. ARE. FOUR. LIGHTS!

Yup, dispite all the misinformation from the Right the so called liberal news is still telling the facts.

Like Dan Rather's 'fake but accurate' documents ?

Or how one networked called the 2000 elections, for Gore, before the polls in western FL had closed ?

There's bias and spin enough for all, but when the MSM is so vastly outweighed by the Left, the spin they produce gets repeated far more often, and repeated , as 'fact', than anything coming out of FOX.

MAGONSDAUGHTER

Actually the analogy is a particularly poor one. Watching the Fox news may be excruciating, but it is nothing being tortured to the point of complete psychological breakdown, where reality becomes distorted. It is, like its predecessor 1984, damning torture and tyranny, but this particular scene is not about the affect of misinformation.

1984 contains many such examples that you might have used. The fact that there is an electronic media system which enables facts to be rewritten after events to show the tyrannical government in a positive light, the manipulation of language to create a universal mind set of the people of Ingsoc, were brilliant and pertinent theories that Orwell put into his narrative and are particularly applicable today. Newspeak is todays soundbites.

Right on, Magons. But you see, Wulf just looks for something he can use--and since his mentality is superficial, he's only seen or read the superficial. Especially fantasy, science fiction, and anything with a "hero" in it. I'm not sure he's ever even HEARD of 1984, much less is familiar with all the brilliance of it. You will only get the simple and the superficial from both he and Raptor; one should never expect more.

This is especially obvious when he brings out things like the speech from Braveheart. You know, the movie where in the end, Mel Gibson is brutally tortured and killed? Lot of good his words did him there, eh? I bet he worked all day on that speech.

Socialist and unashamed.

Whoa now. I'll grant you the historical accuracy of the movie was dubious, but let's not be mocking the Scottish Struggle for Independence in front of someone from Clan Chattan.

Byte, I've never equated Braveheart with anything actually historical, but with the ego of Mel Gibson and Hollywoodized, fictional history. So have no fears on my account. ;o)
