Haha.... as if I needed to admit to myself that I had yet another addiction....

http://www.today.com/video/today/52339605#52339605

I've been downloading TV shows for years, but at this point services like Netflix are getting so good that I feel like I'm wasting my time... especially since the TV and my network setup are both antiquated and I'm only able to view stuff at 720 without severe audio/video sync issues.

I can't tell you how many weekends I've spent watching an entire season or two of Dexter or House M.D. or Breaking Bad or Chuck or The Walking Dead or one of about 30-50 other great shows. We truly are in a "Golden Age" of writing and performing on Television. I think back to how cheesy even some of the most well regarded TV shows were when I was a kid, such as "War of the Worlds" or "Sledgehammer" or "Quantum Leap", compared to the Hollywood caliber writing and acting in today's TV offerings.

Having as much free time as I've provided for myself by being able to make ends meet with a part time minimum wage job under 10k a year turns out to be a blessing and a curse. Honestly, I don't even understand how an adult with children and a full time job would ever have time for "binge watching". I can easily get lost on a cold winter day off of work and watch an entire season of a show before I go to sleep. The hot days we've been seeing recently haven't slowed me down all that much either. All of those lost hours that I'll never get back aren't as much of a concern to me as all of the lost hours I'll face in the future by continuing on this path.

I don't hear the term "boob tube" much anymore... I figure either it fell out of style and/or it's politically incorrect so it's not thrown around. It really summed it all up quite nicely though. If you watch too much TV, you'll quickly find yourself a "boob". Don't get me wrong... I love boobs, however, a going-on-34 year old Boob with 2 days of stubble growing and about 15lbs of gut that needs to be shed is not at all attractive to me. I'm still relatively young and in reasonable shape. As grotesque as I find myself to be compared to the "glory days", I'd imagine there are so many out there that are so much deeper into their own quicksand, especially when they have already eclipsed their 40th or 50th birthdays and their metabolism has slowed to a crawl.

Anyways..... Two actual DVD purchases I DID make back in the day were Firefly and the first 3 seasons of Arrested Development (which I gave to my brother when he moved out, along with the rest of my DVD collection because it's much easier to stream downloaded seasons with an XBox controller than it is to get up and change the Disc every 4 episodes or so.

Who knows people.... ? Maybe Firefly can be resurrected.... Netflix did its customers a HUGE service by reuniting the entire cast and many of the quirky extras of Arrested Development for it's Netflix exclusive 4th season. I felt that, especially compared to other shows (particularly on Fox) that had met an early demise, they did an exceptional job wrapping up the entire story, and even though I was sad that it was over, it certainly wasn't ended on a massive cliffhanger that was never resolved like "Sarah Conner Chronicles", or it didn't leave at least 5 years of untold stories that should have been told before Serenity came out.

The 4th season of Arrested Deveolopment was good. Not great... but good (which is actually still a compliment since it's the best comedy TV show ever made). It all lead up to the last 15 seconds though..... Once again, I feel that this story could go on, but it was "ended" perfectly without any need for a single new episode.

BTW... James Gandolfini just died, I found out by the auto-play on Today after this video played out. R.I.P. Tony Soprano. Salut!

Some tv is still terrible. "Reality" television, most sitcoms, and I've noticed the Discovery channel has really been dumbing down their offerings.

Mitch Hurwitz says he is determined to continue the story of Arrested Development, even if it takes the form of collectible needlepoint patterns. So look for more to come on that front. It's been a boon to Netflix; even I signed up the day before it was released.

I don't think I watch a single drama on network TV anymore. Oh, wait - there is one: "Elementary" on CBS. I like it, but I don't *like* like it. It's okay. Better than average. I'll watch it if it stays on, won't cry if it's canceled.

Other than that, every drama I watch is on cable or Netflix.

Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

Me too, Mike. But I do watch one "drama" (if you want to call it that): Castle. Actually the only network show I watch, period; everything else is On Demand, Roku and cable channels. Been that way for years; I never even switch to network channels any more.

No, wait; given I wait and then watch it On Demand, I guess that technically makes it the only "network" SHOW I watch, but not on the network, even then, and I wait long enough to be able to fast forward past the commercials, so they don't even get that out of me. Screw network TV.
