Study of water wells near Marcellus shale reveals high concentrations of methane gas with an isotope specifically associated with the fracking wells.

These results and the causes should be painfully obvious to anyone with even a rudimentary understanding of geology, engineering, and well drilling. Or, more generally, anyone with a lick of common sense.

Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

Yup Byte: "anyone with a lick of common sense". But I bet I can tell you who here will be going 'Yay fracking!' and arguing we should do much more of it...

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

Because of the BP Macondo oil spill*, I looked up typical oil well and gas well construction. I learned that it is pipe-within pipe, but that the REAL separation between the oil/ gas and the surrounding strata is not the pipes, but the cement which surrounds the tubes and holds them in place.

I thought I knew everything, more or less, but I was shocked to learn just a week ago that they only put in about 1" of cement. Yikes! How can they expect it NOT to crack??

Fast forward to CA, where everything is worse: we really, REALLY depend on our groundwater, so much so that we find it cost-effective to treat sewage water to a very high standard, and re-inject it into the acquifers.

Indeed, since much of our groundwater is already contaminated with hexchrome and methylene chloride and other solvents from past poor practices, we're even building a huge water treatment plant in the San Fernando Valley, a heavily populated area north of LA proper, to treat contaminated groundwater and pipe it to homes as drinking water.

Fracking sukcs up huge amounts of water; I'm not even sure where we would get all of this water from. And then it injects these huge amounts of spoiled water into the ground and leaks... especially if you live in an earthquake zone, as we do. For CA, this really is a "water or oil" issue, and only an idiot would seek to worsen the damage we've already done to our acquifers.

* Did you know that the day of the Deepwater blowout, a team of engineers had been 'copterd in to perform a vital safety test? They were told not to bother, and were 'coptered out again. At the moment of the gas explosion, the crew on the rig was having a party, celebrating all of the "passed" safety tests, and the alarms and gages which could have warned them of impending disaster had been manually turned off.
