Keep the Shiny side up

Madame and I went out in the yard around 8:15pm EST and watched the launch of a Minotaur I rocket from the NASA Wallops Island Flight Facility on the Delmarva Peninsula, about 120 miles away to the southeast. We could see it as a bright spot rising above the horizon pretty quickly, and then seeming to slow down as it arced east and away from us. Watched it for about three minutes before it was out of sight.

Pretty cool.

We're already planning to check the schedule for upcoming launches and maybe go down to their visitor center and watch another launch closer up. Wallops is getting a lot more launches as rockets get more efficient and don't need all the infrastructure of places like the Kennedy Space Center.

The Maven mission launched from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Wallops Island, where Minotaur launched, is on the Cape Charles peninsula of Virginia, on the east side of the Chesapeake Bay. Wallops doesn't have the capability to launch interplanetary missions (yet) but is being used more and more to launch research sattelites.
