There's a thing, it's called the minimum viable population.

That, plus genetic bottlenecking, is why most ideas about extreme isolation, eugenics, or population reduction do not work from a scientific perspective. For whatever reason, humans as a species already don't have a whole lot of genetic diversity, and so most of these concepts become unsustainable in the long term. Or sometimes the very short term.

It sounds like they were already susceptible to a genetic syndrome when they started this. The eye and hearing problems are obvious markers, likely related to that susceptibility to Zellwegers. The learning disabilities could be either genetic, or feral child syndrome due to the lack of appropriate caregiving.

There's nothing technically wrong with an austere lifestyle and not using toilets or toilet paper (the Amish in America do this all the time) or even a sexually open culture, but this is something else.

Yes, you are right.

Inbreeding does not in itself cause genetic mutations, as previously thought, its just that your chances of genetic problems being carried on substantially increase because of that bottlenecking.

Seems like what we have here is extreme neglect and abuse over generations. Very sad for the children. You wonder if they will make it on the outside of their family, disfuntional in the extreme as it was.
