Keep the Shiny side up

Interesting discussion on the Trans-Atlantic Trade and Investment Partnership and the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade agreements on the Diane Rehm show on WAMU yesterday.

The transcript is here:

al-trade-agreements/transcript

Based on this conversation, I'm not seeing very much good for the U.S. coming out of these treaties, and a good bit of bad, including loss of more jobs, an increase in income inequality, the preemption of U.S. laws by the terms of the treaties, lack of transparency in the treaties, etc.

SignyM, I know you've mentioned the PTT a few times, and just wanted to bring this to your attention.

SIGNYM

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

I'm deeply against the TPP, and also the same deal with the EU. And even MORE frustrated that all of the negotiations are opaque to citizens but transparent to corporations, who modify the contract at will and in their own interests, in order to abrogate national sovereignty.

As far as I can tell, "our" interest in the TPP is about intellectual property. Since we really don't produce else anyway, the ONE thing "we" are clinging to is patent and copyright protection in other nations. Since I'm also deeply against intellectual property, that puts the TPP pretty high up on my shitlist.

Fortunately for us, China is not part of the TPP. So it's a clusterfuck, but it would be far worse if China became part of The Borg, instead of trying to be a Borg of its own.
