I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

One of several semi-permanent weather systems over the Earth, the polar vortex is an area of low pressure in the upper atmosphere that, on average in the Northern Hemisphere, typically has centers in two main areas: near Canada's Baffin Island, and over northeast Siberia.

The vortex is strongest in winter, thanks to an increased temperature contrast between the polar regions and the mid-latitudes, including the United States.
Polar Vortex Plunge Jan. 2014

A typical departure from average high temperature map you'll see in an Arctic outbreak in January. Blue shading denotes areas of colder than average temperatures. (Note: These are not actual temperatures, but how far below (negative numbers) average for early January temperatures are, in this case.)

Occasionally, the polar vortex can either be forced well south of its typical position, or a significant piece of the larger spin can break off and plunge south into the U.S.

In the case of this outbreak, a large piece of the vortex broke off and was forced well to the south over Ontario and the northern Great Lakes, as you can see in the animation at left (click the enlarge link for a bigger map).

Contributing to this southward buckling of the jet stream was a pronounced northward diversion of the polar jet stream over the eastern Pacific Ocean and West Coast of the U.S. To the east, or downstream of this northward diversion, or ridge of high pressure aloft, the polar vortex was forced southward.

Just a reminder that AGW models predict some areas at some points to become even colder than normal.

Geezer had posted, several months ago, that "extreme weather events" had not statistically increased. My reply was the the jet stream was JUST NOW becoming abnormal. Since I follow the jet stream (a geeky hobby of mine) I noticed that in 2013, the jet stream had often either split, or swung very far south and very far north. I've posted about the new jet stream five or six times by now. (Geezer, please don't ask me to prove this. Read with comprehension next time.) I also posted a number of links to the new jet stream, and the extreme weather events of 2013, including the drying up of China's largest freshwater lake under an extreme hot spell. This goes along with Australia's hottest year on record. I predicted- and continue to predict- new records and more extreme events.

Just sayin'.

Both climate change advocates and climate change skeptics need to stop looking at one time occurrences and claiming that it is or isn't climate change.

Climate change would be a LONG TERM TREND, not a one-time storm.

Please send some of your snow over here. We are used to low and negative temperatures, but we have been unbearably dry for several years now and we NEED snow. Our drinking water stores are in bad shape. The ski resorts have somehow managed 11 feet or so, but they're on north faces and I've seen south faces at the same elevation with maybe only six inches.

Limbaugh: Media, Liberal Activists Ginning Up ‘Polar Vortex’ to Sell Global Warming ‘Hoax’

Rush Limbaugh isn’t buying into the “polar vortex” term being used in the media to describe the extreme cold all over the country right now, saying it’s just a hyperbole and a way for liberals to “attach this to the global warming agenda.”

He mocked the media coverage of the “vortex,” saying that the entire game is to make this sound “new and unprecedented” so blame entirely goes to humans, “particularly Republicans.” http://www.mediaite.com/online/limbaugh-media-liberal-activists-ginnin

Yeah, hell, who needs that "science" bullshit anyway?

Fathom the hypocrisy of a government that requires every citizen to prove they are insured... but not everyone must prove they are a citizen

Well Science is hard for people whom can only process simple phases to understand.
