History is being made. A social experiment is happening. Philosophical discussions have been provoked.

Left Right Up Down Start Select - commands entered into a prompt by 75,000+ different people simultaneously in an attempt to play a single-player game cooperatively over a livestream.

The community deals with almost entirely random movement/actions and troll saboteurs and progresses at a snails pace. Somehow, against all odds, after five days of non-stop play, they've made it almost half-way through the game. The greatest challenges are yet to come.

It has taken almost 18 hours to solve a simple puzzle, which has necessitated the introduction of a new mechanic - democracy mode versus anarchy mode, measured by a bar that switches over at 75% of the vote.

Even with the democracy option, they are still having difficulty getting past the puzzle. It switches back and forth.

This... is pointless. And yet, this reminds us why video games are art.

Update: They finally beat the puzzle.

Most of the time, it's like this.

And the combined efforts of 100,000+ people on the internet is roughly equivalent to forty children aged 5 to 9 playing round robin.

Still, it's amazing that out of what basically is complete randomness, they've managed to do anything. And that includes when they're in democracy mode, because the way that works is just about as batshit as when everyone is doing whatever the heck they want.

But enough people want to help and be constructive that progress can be made, and some of them do manage to figure out strategies amid the chaos, resulting in some very clever solutions.

Ahaha, oh man, they came so close to finally beating this ONE guy that was the whole reason they had to do that puzzle but lost. They don't have to do the puzzle again, but it's still going to be HOURS before they get back there to try again.
