Both my nutritionist and online said that 1 cup of brown rice is 40-45 grams of carbs, with the fiber content making it effectively 40.

NOT MINE!!!!

Serving size is 1/4 cup. THERE IS 32 GRAMS OF CARBS AFTER YOU SUBTRACT THE 2 GRAMS OF FIBER!!!!!!/

Er ... not necessarily, SIX.

Nutrition labels on things like uncooked beans, rice, and oatmeal (and more exotic products like quinoa, wheat berries, barley, and amaranth) sometimes list as "dry" (uncooked) and sometimes as cooked. And, unfortunately, sometimes they're not explicit which one they're referring to. Since rice, beans, oats etc. approximately double in volume ... triple, if you cook with a lot of water and fluff it up ... it's harder to list an exact COOKED nutrition bc so much depends on how it was cooked.

What is probably listed is 1/4 c dry uncooked rice, which, when cooked, will yield somewhere is the realm of 1/2-3/4 cup rice. A cup of their COOKED rice will be in the realm of 40-60 grams net carbs, depending on how it was cooked. Either about the same as what you found, or 20 grams more. Kind of crazy-making when you're trying to figure out how much starch you're putting in your mouth since who the hell ever cooks just 1/4 c of anything, or measures how much volume yield from cooking a whole cup of something? It's frustrating!

I don't mind zapping one serving of oatmeal in the mwave so I can calculate those carbs easily, but beans take hours and hours to prepare, and who the hell is going to cook 1/4 cup of beans for 2 hours? Been back and forth on the inet and the best I can do is come up with a sort of overall average (except for garbanzos, which are relatively high net carbs). Same thing with rice.

Rice tends to be a "starch bomb" for hubby... it drives his sugar up hugely, even when I limit his serving to the point where it's barely worth putting in his plate. But the infamous "they" say that if you pair it with beans, it won't reduce the overall net carbs bu it WILL slow dow the absorption and prevent those blood suagr surges.

FWIW I tend to cook with less water for less time than package instructions bc I like my rice, beans and oats to be firmer bc I'm often adding them to something else and I don't like them falling apart, so MY cooked stuff is a bit more nutrient-dense than what you would normally find online as "cooked")

The label I have doesn't specify cooked or uncooked. It just says that 1/4 cup is a serving and that there are 34 grams of carbs - 2 grams of fiber.

I just looked at Minute instant rice and it does say that 1/2 cup dry makes about 1 cup cooked. But even still, it claims that 1/2 cup dry and 1 cup cooked is equal to 39 grams of carbs - 2 grams of fiber, which is roughly half of what the Nishiki rice is when they say 1/4 cup of rice is 36-2.

So I didn't know that when I'm told 1/2 cup of rice = x amount of carbs they meant AFTER cooking... So I was already doubling my carb intake right there. But when the brand I'm using is nearly twice as carb dense as another brand, that means as much as 4 times what I thought it would be.

It was more like 3.2 times as much, but I went into it thinking 60 grams and it turned out to be 190+.

Thanks for the info. They shouldn't label it that way, IMO and should just tell you what the nutritional value of things are UNCOOKED so you don't have to do additional figuring. Stupid, stupid.

Minute rice/instant rice has been already cooked, and then dried. You can tell by the individual grains bc they're kind of crumbly, whereas regular rice is very hard.

"They" try to make things easy by giving you the "ready to eat" nutrition, but dry weight is a more reliable number.

I think it varies by brand. The Nishiki brand I get says 1/4 cup is 36-2. There's no way that's the AFTER cooked info, otherwise you'd be cooking 1/8th of a cup of dry rice.

Maybe all the brands do this, but the generic info online just says the cooked measurement. My nutritionist didn't make a differentiation between the two either. Maybe everybody just assumes that everybody else would assume the cooked measurement and I went to dry weight just because, like you said, it's a more reliable number.

I've got a TON of rice to go through. At this rate, it will last me the next 2 years if I ate it every night.

I may consider giving a lot of that away too. It doesn't do me a lot of good as filler anymore because the quantity I can consume without taking obscene amounts of insulin beforehand turns out to be almost nothing. I may as well be eating pizza or something I enjoy more and get more mileage out of my insulin.

I'm down to 210 right now after insulin and lunch. It's slowly been making its way down from the mid 240s from before lunch.

I'm going to be going to my friend's tonight for dinner and hanging out. Hopefully I can do this right while on the road. I really need to get this under control so I can start waking up with good numbers and then seeing how my workout effects the numbers.

We did, thanks Brenda.

We had dinner then we went fishing for a few hours. I caught ten fish with his daughter's fishing pole. Crappies and Blue Gills. He was using my blue gills as bait and got himself a real nice large mouth bass with one of them right after he caught the biggest crappie he's ever caught in his life. It had to be over 4 lbs. I didn't even know they got that big.

I overestimated how much insulin I'd need for dinner there and thankfully I picked up some glucose chewables for my kit because I needed 6 of them while we were out fishing. Man, it's going to be hard figuring that out when I'm not at home measuring everything myself. I still dipped low when I was at his house, so I ate some chips and a few mini-cookies they had instead of wasting that extra insulin on more chewable tablets. But of course, I over-compensated the other way and went too high.

I was running around 60 to 85 for about 4 hours there, and after the chips and cookies I spiked up to 236 and now I'm back down under 210.

The good news is that I'm not feeling sick when I get around 75-80 anymore, but I really felt it when I got down to 60-70. Also good is that even though I spiked over 200 it was still not that high over 200 and I won't be going to sleep tonight in the 300's.

Once we got back to his place we played a few games of pool and watched a movie. They sent me home with more food again.

It sounds to me like you're doing a remarkable job figuring this out SIX. Just keep a plastic bag of cookies with you and a few glucose tablets and you should be OK.

Thanks Sigs.

Yeah, right? Some cookies or something too. I really felt like I wasted that insulin when I was "snacking" on chewables to keep the level from dipping instead of eating REAL FOOD. I told him the only reason I was eating the tabs was because we were out for a few hours without any food and I could have been eating some more food instead if we were still at his house or if I were at my place and I'd done the same thing.

I think it's pretty hard on him seeing me having to go through with this. I talk with his wife a lot when I'm there and she's super into cooking and nutrition already, although she didn't have any experience with diabetes or diabetics before so she's really interested in it. (Which is doubly awesome for me because she's caring enough that she is incorporating what she's learned into her cooking when I come over too ). She told me that it's been rough on my buddy seeing me go through this. He doesn't want to talk much about it, but at the moment it is all I'm really talking about. I know it bothered him how much I was looking at the meter yesterday, but I told him that it's only because this is all new to me and it was only my 2nd day using it. Once I really figure this stuff out I should be able to sleepwalk through the steps and even though I'll have the monitor on me it will only be to let me know if I'm getting too high or low and I won't be obsessively checking it all the time.

So after I posted last night I cooked up 2 chicken breasts. By that point I was down to about 180mg/dL. If I didn't cheat a little and have some sunflower seeds I probably would have been under 200 all night and would have even gone down a little from 180, but it looks like I hung around 180-190 most of the night and by early morning around 3 hours before I woke up I went over 200 up to around 230 and when I woke up I was 210 before I took my long-active. (I think that the higher readings around 6:00AM-9:00AM are either because of the phenomena that Second posted about way earlier in this thread and/or the long-active shot from the morning before wears off before 24 hours is up).

So...

Great news. Even though I went out and ate at a friends and had to overcompensate for some lows with glucose tabs and then I overcompensated a bit by eating too many chips/cookies and went a little high, this was my lowest wake-up number by 92mg/dL so far.

I'm already doing pretty decent on the carb counting program that I wasn't ordered by Dr. Endo to start until my Diabetes Education classes that don't even start for another 11 days.

I'm probably not going to bother too much with worrying about gaining weight and weighing myself constantly anymore too. If anything, I've got to start getting more active and/or eating less for a while. I haven't weighed myself today, but yesterday after my business I was 153.4lbs. That's a full 10lbs heavier than I was right around Easter when I thought I was dying. Though it's obvious that just by working out for around a month now I've already put on some muscle and that a few pounds of this is water weight due to the fact I'm not constantly dehydrated while drinking gallons of fluids per day, I've also got some belly fat on the sides of my abdomen.

I never thought I'd be so happy to see belly fat.

Cool on the fishing. I haven't been since I was a kid and then I didn't catch anything.

SIG is right. Keep a small bag of cookies or even granola bars on you at all times.

I carry chocolate chip granola bars with me for my hypoglycemia.

Yeah, me too. Rain or shine, I have to take puppy-wuppy out for her morning business. Fortunately for me, it's mostly "not rain" altho yesterday morning it was spattering, and the day before yesterday it was truly raining. I thought our rain was over for the year? NOW, I guess, is the end of the rainy season?

Odd...

The Long-Active jab doesn't actually appear to do anything?

I'm going to eat lunch now but I didn't eat breakfast. I took that Long-Active shot 4 1/2 hours ago now and I'm really not seeing any difference. It's gone down a bit into the 190's range, but it's just kind of been stable at a little too high all morning.

Weird.

That's part of having a doggo as a pet.

I hope you don't get too much more rain. There are wildfires burning in my province and Alberta has 80 burning and they are calling help from Ontario and Quebec. Think there is a big wildfire burning in Saskatchewan but nothing farther east so far.

I get different info from different websites, but "long acting" insulin doesn't start working for 2 hours, never peaks, and works for appx 24 hours. Ultra long acting only gets going after 6 hours, doesn't peak, and works for appx 36 hours. If you're injecting yourself every day you'll never see it "kick in" since its effect will be constant. I think what this means is that without the long-acting insulin your blood sugar would be routinely near 300? Anyway, a lot higher than it is now.

Interesting. I'm going to have to talk to the doctor and get his take on it.

It's about 2 hours and 45 minute since I jabbed and ate. I never spiked after eating this time, but it remained pretty constant around 185 or so for about 90 minutes after lunch, but in the last hour it's gone down to around 135. This does seem to be the time of day that I start dipping. It wouldn't surprise me if I hit the 60s to 90's before I eat dinner.

I don't really understand why this seems to be my pattern.

Yup. Just like I thought would happen I ended up getting my alert that I fell under 80. Not sure what happens between lunch where it didn't really go down from around 200 for a few hours and then just kind of free falls about 4 hours later. It's not the exact same time every day, but there is a pattern developing here.

I didn't use glucose tabs, but I had a 1/2 cup of peanuts a few hours ago when it happened. Been between 75 and 80 since then and I'm cooking dinner right now.

Yeah. I'm certainly developing some patterns here. Even if my monitor didn't point that out with the data that I feed the program on the PC, I'd have spotted it since it's a big neon sign.

Something is happening at around 5:00-6:00 AM where my sugar spikes.

Two nights ago I was reading high when I went to bed (high 100's/low 200's and trending slowly downward until around 5:00AM). Last night I was well within range when I went to bed (Around 120 and mostly a little below that).

Yesterday morning I woke up at 9:00AM at 220. This morning I woke up around 8:40AM at 208.

So either we've got ourselves a Dawn Phenomenon and/or my Long-Active insulin shots aren't lasting 24 hours.

It's not the Somogyi Effect, at least not now, because I've not yet had hypoglycemia during the night.

Quote:

Named after Michael Somogyi, PhD, a chemist who was the first to describe it in the 1930s, the Somogyi effect is the body’s response to low blood glucose (hypoglycemia) during the night. Say you miss dinner or take too much insulin after your evening meal. Your blood glucose may fall too low overnight. Your body makes more glucose in order to compensate, and you wake up with high blood glucose.

They say the answer most likely is NOT to up the Long-Active dose because that could bring me down too low during the day. I possibly need to be taking that dose later in the day, switch to a twice daily long shot, switch to an Ultra-Long-Active shot or use an insulin pump. (Eventually, I want to be on an insulin pump anyhow).

Morning workouts can help. Evening can too, but they say to be careful about the evening workouts since they can make you dip too low at night while you're sleeping.

I think it might be time to add my workouts back into my day. I'm going to my aunt's today and we're going to my Grandma's service. I may stay there overnight and help her out with things she needs helping with too. Tuesday morning I plan on working out again. I don't want to risk doing it before I head out on the road for 40 minutes since I'll be eating and doing some insulin already before I leave. I haven't worked out since the monitor was installed and I don't have any clue what it does to my sugar levels.

153.0 lbs on the scale today. I'm back, baby.

Since apparently everyone's cortisol, adrenaline, and sugar go up at stupid o'clock I guess that's to be expected. I noticed that when dear daughter was on a very strict medically induced keto diet for seizure control: her urine ketones (a measure of fat-burning) were always LOWEST in the AM, even after fasting all night. I was told that was normal.

I don't understand the afternoon dip. It's my understanding tho that humans have daily biological rhythms- cortisol, adrenaline, insulin, melatonin, thyroid hormones etc all go up and down in regular patterns.

For puupy-wuppy's health, and for mine, I take her on the longest walk she's up for, which is usually somewhere between a half mile to 3/4 mile. Not hugely long but better than nothing.

I am indoors and just listening to some music and playing cards.

Exercise is good. I will get enough of that next week. Dental appointment tomorrow, then hearing aides on Tuesday. Wednesday is a break day then Mah jong on Thursday and work on Friday. Then I have to fit in some book work as well.

I think you're probably on to something. My long-active shot might need some alterations too.

I stayed over at my aunt's place after my Grandma's service and just got back a while ago. We had a good time.

I'm figuring this stuff out. The last 24 hours only had me above 200mg/dL for about 1 hour about 3 hours after dinner. When I shot again for a late snack I got it down to around 120. It was on the rise when I woke up at 7:00AM, but maybe because I didn't sleep in until 9:00AM it never went over around mid-180's. I was doing great all day and staying within my GOOD area until I must have overdone the insulin before we ate Pizza. I think I took 2 units too many for the 6 pieces that I ate. When I left her place to drive home I was 110, but only 15 minutes later in the car I got my below 80 reading and had to take tabs when I got to 65. I actually dipped to 59 before the tabs brought me back up. I just wanted to make sure I was up before I got on the expressway, which I was. I'm now at 110 again and stable.

Except for that dip, I've been in the GOOD zone since about 11:30PM last night. I haven't gone over 200 once today.

I'm hoping once I keep these numbers low that my body starts helping me with evening my numbers out. I always hate when I have to take glucose tabs because I view that as wasted insulin and carbs that could be spent on real food instead of "saving" myself with pure sugar for overdoing the insulin units. If I keep having to do that I won't have to worry about being underweight ever again for sure, but ingesting 15grams of pure sugar every day is probably just as bad for me long term as having 400mg/dL 24/7.

I'll get there...

UPDATE: Yeah. Weight is no longer an issue. With the hoodie I always hold when I'm weighing myself since I had it on back when it was still cold and I hit as low as 143.4lbs, I'm now 154.2lbs.

It's going to be weird worrying about eating too much again. I've probably been dealing with diabetes in the background so long before I realized there were obvious issues that I mistook that for a high metabolic rate.

I'm happy to see some belly fat after looking so gaunt there for a while, but I need to tap the breaks on the eating and put on the weight the right way.

Now that I have a few days of continuous monitoring under my belt I wanted to see what a "good" average level was.

Considering my first 2 of the 5 days I've been doing this were a majority over 200, I would say I'm not doing too shabby.

I read this:

Quote:

While A1C and eAG levels will differ depending on several factors, including age, sex, activity level, etc., the ADA recommends a target eAG of 154 mg/dL (A1C = 7%) for most adults with diabetes who are not pregnant.

eAG is Estimated Average Glucose.

My average right now is 166 since I put the monitor on Thursday afternoon, down from the 174 that it was before I left yesterday morning to go to my aunts.

My A1C for the past 5 days is 7.3% (With 7.0% or lower being the target). I realize that you don't get a real A1C reading unless they test your red blood cells over the last 3 months, but with the limited data I have recorded since Thursday, that's where they're telling me that I currently stand.

WOO HOO!!

Yeah, don't count AC just yet. You need three months of treatment before you can start figuring that out.

I guess it would be hard at this point to figure out when you started to have problems. Part of it is, you WERE active. And the other part is, you WERE really cold, and that can definitely raise your required calories. But OOC, can you rememeber a time when you needed to eat cheap "filler food" when you WEREN'T physically active or freezing?

Yeah. And if I had my way we wouldn't even start that clock until Thursday. The first week I was just on 500mg Metformin twice a day. The second and third week I was on twice that with the Glipizide and a long-active. It wasn't until week four that I was on long and rapid-active, and two days after that I got the continuous monitor installed.

So we're starting week 5 today, but in my mind it's only day 6 today because I couldn't actually really understand anything that was going on until I could see continuous data.

Quote:

Well... You mentioned before that I could have had this problem brewing for years (pun not intended), and that maybe I was drinking so much coffee to overcompensate for it.

I think it's possible that I was borderline (or pre) diabetic for YEARS, and even with a doctor's visit 4 years ago and some eye exams, nobody caught it. The first thing my dentist said when we found out how much bone loss I had with my teeth was he thought I could have diabetes. I think that was EIGHT YEARS AGO right now. I've been sober for 6 1/2 years, so yeah... I think that started in 2015. When I got blood work done in 2019, I was 104mg/dL and they warned me about it being high but didn't say it was diabetes (or pre-diabetes).

So I guess an A1C wouldn't be a bad test right now. Since red blood cells die off in 3 months it wouldn't go back very far, but it would probably tell us if it had been going on at least since the 1st week of March, which I'm sure it was since that would have been right around the time where I'd already lost around 20lbs without even realizing I'd lost it.

Quote:

I was active when going to Grams to visit her when she was ill and before she passed, and then after she passed when I was continuing removing what was left of the hoard, but I was far less active this winter and spring than I usually am. By this time last year I had already built all of my shelving and installed all the new electric in my garage and removing what was left of my own hoard out there while re-organizing everything. As far as housework goes this year, I've mowed the lawn twice and installed my outside porch lamp. :(

Quote:

But OOC, can you rememeber a time when you needed to eat cheap "filler food" when you WEREN'T physically active or freezing?

Well... I've been eating rice like that ever since right around the time I went gluten-free(ish). That would have probably been about a year after I sobered up. (For three or so years I was completely gluten free, but then I relaxed that to only being gluten free at home and not putting anyone out if they were cooking for me or when I was eating out with people like when I go down to visit my brother).

Brown rice became my cheap filler food to make up for not eating the tons of pasta and pizza I ate back in my drinking days.

And yeah... as active as I could be during that time, I've always had my ups and downs. Winter was always the worst for the downs, but it could happen in the middle of summer too. You can probably remember how I always get in the zone and get a ton of stuff down but then I can have 2 or 3 weeks straight where I do nothing and feel like doing nothing.

So... I don't even really consider that out of character.

I'm probably Bi-Polar just like my mom and my brother on top of being a diabetic.

Well... It happened again today. I was around 110 straight through a 9:30 dinner/shot up until around 11:30 when I went to sleep and a few hours after that. That was an earlier-than-usual sleep time for me after not sleeping very long at my aunt's place the previous night. At around 4:30 my alert went off to let me know I was over 200mg/dL. I woke up around 8:00AM and it was 210. So this appears to be something that will happen to me every night while I'm sleeping unless the doctors can figure out something for me.

But hey, even though we breached 200 this morning after managing to stay under it last night, at least I'm not waking up to 400's and 500's anymore, right?

Weight is acceptable too. I had pizza yesterday for lunch and leftovers last night and those 4 tabs of gluten when I hit a low in the afternoon and I'm 153.4, which is down from two days ago. I'd like to remain steady at around this weight until my workouts start developing more muscle and we can move our way up to around 165 and keep it there.

Hey, I call that a win! I wonder if your doctors will try to do something about that AM spike or if they'll just let it slide, as long as it's not too high.

Still up around 200, so it would appear that I didn't take enough insulin when I ate to overcompensate for the already high number I woke up with this morning.

It's going to be tricky perfecting the balance. A couple more units could get me crashing again.

It seems like I have a hard time bringing it down in the morning with breakfast, but I bring it down too much in the afternoon with lunch.

My math isn't fuzzy, at least when I'm at home in a controlled environment. I'm wondering if something I'm unaware of is going on behind the scenes here.

Hearing appointment done and my hearing in both ears is stable which is good. But hearing aides needed some work done on them. One thing is they were set too low, so the audiologist had to adjust the sound level then the wire on them was too long and she had to fix that then she had to replace the covering for the microphone with a smaller one. After all that she said I have to be sure I have them in properly as they weren't when I went in. The problem there is that my ear canals are bent up and that is not right. Also should be using them more when I am home as I told her I had to put the tv up a notch to hear it. Then I also have to get my ears cleaned by a doc at some point too.

But all in all not a bad appointment and I like this audiologist better than the one I saw last year. So, we shall see what happens next year.

Didn't wake up to any alerts this morning because there weren't any.

I don't know if I actually did anything different last night than the nights previously. Maybe I'm finally starting to level out?

I'm still higher than I want to be, but all night I was right around 160 and the line was pretty much even from midnight to 7:00AM when I woke up. Strangely, it did take a dip to my target 120's after waking up, but then went up to the low 170's by the time I took my daily shot at 9:00AM.

Best start I've woken up to by far. First time I've been up in the morning without a single reading over 180mg/dL. I'm pretty sure I'll have my daily mid-afternoon drop again, but this might be my first day where I don't spend any time too high.

154.0 lbs today.

Gotta run and get some gas and then it's time to mow the lawn. Finally going to have a warm and dry day for it.

Well... It sounded good on paper.

I ate breakfast and about an hour later I spiked to about 210 for about 45 minutes despite the correct measurement of insulin.

Then, after I got back from shopping and picking up gas for my mower, I was back down to 110. I decided as a preemptive measure I'd eat 1/2 cup of peanuts. I pulled some weeds and before I started mowing I was down to 84. When I finished the front yard I was down to 64. I ate another 1/2 cup of peanuts. Finished the lawn and I've been around 70-72 since. Ate a banana when I came back inside and that didn't move the needle after 30 minutes. Started feeling weird and got a headache now, so I just broke down and took two more of those damn glucose tablets.

This is like 6 days in a row I've needed to use those to save me from my lows.

I need somebody to tell me what the hell is going on here.

Interesting thing to note about my levels today...

Including the 2 glucose tabs, I ate almost 50 grams of carbs around lunch time when I was mowing the lawn after having a 15 minute workout this morning and I did not take any insulin for it. I had a brief spike to the mid 150's after taking those two glucose tabs which started coming right back down as quick as it went up, but here we are a little over 3 hours later and I just got an alert that I'm back down to 76.

In addition to the 20 units of long-active, 8 units of rapid-acting is all I've had since I woke up almost 13 hours ago, and I figure I've had about 105 grams of carbs in that amount of time.

AND I'm low.

Could this maybe be a good sign? ....

Maybe?
