Busy couple of days keeping the frig fed with dry ice and setting off fireworks yesterday. This AM I deep- watered to oak tree bc I'm going to mess significantly with the roots soon. Walked the dog and emptied the frig into my home made styrofoam box covered with leftover dry ice. Frig is being repaired... bad compressor. Good thing it's still on factory warranty!

So instead of waiting I'll go do something useful!

Oops. Seems like the repair guy broke the condenser while replacing the compressor.
I have some food in my insul-box but a lot out on the countertops.

Sigh!

Drums fingers...

Running and cooling. I know you're supposed to wait 24 hours but lugging dry ice home every day got old real fast!
My insul-box worked really well, even better than the frig, at chilling food with dry ice. So once the frig temp was in striking distance I tossed leftover dry ice and frozen and chilled food into the beast, and every hour or so another group of foods. Fresh veggies will be next and condiments will be next. And finally, I'll xfer the frozen food from the bzway freezer into some organized fashion in the kiycreexer.

Also, quickly cleaning shelf's as I go. Set my alarm to check every hour and make sure the frig isn't getting TOO cold bc I don't want to accidentally freeze more vegetables.

You're supposed to wait 24 hours for what?

I know you're supposed to wait 24 hours if it's a new fridge and it was transported to your house on the side, but you probably didn't need to wait 24 hours just for the repair guy to do his work. You should be okay, and from what I read if it were a problem you would have noticed it pretty quickly after you started it up.

Had me a scare with that recently with the new fridge myself. Only when it wasn't cooling off as fast as I thought it would and I looked up how long that was supposed to take was when I read that you should wait 24 hours before starting a fridge and I kind of panicked since it had already been on 2 hours at max cool. But it's been sitting upright in my garage for at least 5 months and we brought it in upright with the forearm forklifts, only tilting it to the side a bit for a few seconds when I was going up the stairs and my neighbor was following me into the front door. I guess the oil that lubricates things gets to places it shouldn't be when it's sitting on its side during transport and takes a while to get back down to where it needs to be.

And honestly, we didn't wait any time at all when my Step-dad brought the old fridge over to my place years back when the one that came with my house broke on me, and we'd transported it from the south suburbs of Chicago to my place on its side before it got here. I didn't know about that, and obviously he didn't either or he would have said I couldn't plug it in right away. It's from the 90's and it still works to this day.

I've got a feeling that if you were having problems from the 24 hour rule right now you'd already be calling them to come back and fix the fridge tomorrow.

Glad you got it working again.

My leather conditioner is coming tomorrow. Exciting. I hope it arrives early, but they say I might not get the order until 10PM. I'd love to get that done tomorrow.

Had a do-nothing day and it was nice. Got some things coming up this weekend and next week, so I don't really want to start any big projects in the meantime. I really should get what I can get cleaned up in my house though. I'll have some yardwork to do next week and the floor should be cured so I can get the oriental rug and the furniture and TV out on the back porch too.

Had to clean up a LOT of mouse poop and pee from that otherwise brand new range hood I got from my friend. (His loss is my gain, but I'm pretty sure that the fact mice got in the box and made it their home factored in bigly when it came to his decision not to use it and to give it to me )

Unlike my old one, it didn't have a plug and was designed for you to connect flex conduit to the top or side and connect the wires inside a protective box, similar to a ceiling ventalation fan.

No biggie... I cut an old PC case plug in half, stripped the wires down and used a flex conduit connector to clamp the plug in there so I could put it through the hole in the bottom of the cabinet that has the plug outlet meant for that and for my microwave.

This thing looks great. I was a little worried about it being white on top of my white cabinets and tiles behind it, but except for the microwave all the appliances in my kitchen are white and it goes with everything.

I also finally got around to hanging up that really nice wall clock that used to be hung in my grandma's kitchen too.

The kitchen is still not finished, but we're slowly getting there.

I wonder, tho... when you get everything close to the way you want... will you be able to leave? Bc by then it'll be just the way you envisioned!

Yeah... Like pretty much everything else, it remains incomplete and probably will for some time to come. There was just so much to do that jumping around all over the place is necessary.

I think that will be more dependent on the housing market than anything else. I'd never consider leaving in a downturn. My house now is assessed by the taxing authority at over 4 times what I paid for it. That's not even based off of any legitimate assessment, but simply off of property values in current year. Actually, houses that were smaller than mine on less land went for $100k more than what mine is assessed at last year during the peak, but one had great owners that really made it beautiful over the years and the other had house flippers that (hopefully for the new owners) did a good job and didn't just make it look pretty.

In the right market conditions, it's very possible that even with the allowances given on capital gains when selling a primary residence that I would actually owe taxes when I sold the house. It would be foolish for me to ever sell when houses are at rock bottom again like they were when I picked it up.

I still would like to get into something MUCH smaller and more manageable at some point, probably down by my disabled brother, since that would make everyone's life easier when my old man can't do it anymore. But I've reconnected with friends and have a lot more up here to keep me from moving so far away too, so I don't know. I can't imagine staying here when it's all done though. I certainly don't want another insane project house like this one turned out to be, but I could see myself bouncing around from starter home to starter home and flipping them every few years in my future. I've learned a lot about what I'd want to buy next time to work on and what to avoid... that's for sure.

Got the leather conditioner on the one seater and couch. Going to give it a while before I buff it all out. The difference so far isn't near as dramatic as some of the customer review pictures were, but my pieces weren't nearly as bad as most of those pictures. Hopefully I'm happy with the results after the buffout. No doubt any residual nicotine smell is gone though after the treatment and the baking soda wash before it. This stuff smells great.

Yeah. There aren't many bears that come to my city. Usually when you hear about bears it's in North Vancouver or out into the Valley anywhere closer to the river. This was unusual yesterday.

I had to look up the area it was in and if it hadn't been caught it probably would have made it up to the main shopping area which is where I was.

Well, I finally set everything back to rights after the frig disaster. We got to clean out behind the frig... no mouse poop but lots and lots and LOTS of dust! There was frost condensate everywhere that melted on the floor, leaving puddles and muddy footprints, so I mopped the kitchen floor. Twice. The frig and freezer needed cleaning before everything went back in,so there was that. While I was at it, I tossed a few things out and reorganized things. And one cauliflower froze and needed to be thrown out

One curious thing about food stored under dry ice: it absorbs carbon dioxide. And carbon dioxide in water turns into carbonic acid, which tastes a bit sour. Not only did the milk taste sour, it fizzed, like a soda.

So I mopped the floor, again, sanitized the sponges to put them back in the cleaning supplies cabinet, rinsed out the mop and buckets, scrubbed the countertop, cut up a couple of chickens for freezing, walked the dog...

And FINALLY got to yardwork. I don't always know what I'm going to do when I go out. I wanted to weed the mound under the oak tree and do sheet mulching. I had even done the deep watering yesterday in prep. But I just couldn't see doing that without addressing the shape of the tree mound. And since I was moving stones, I found more landscape cloth under the stones so I pulled that out. Cut off a protruding hump of dirt as much as possible without disturbing too many tree roots. Since I couldn't cut the hump back, I decided to bring the other part more forward, so I rebuilt a portion of the retaining wall a foot or so further out, backfilled behind the stones, and watered. Et voila! It looks darn good! I just hope the tree doesn't go into shock.

Oak trees are strong. You should be fine.

I let the leather conditioner sit overnight on the couch.

I'm kind of wondering if this is genuine leather or not. My friend said it was. It certainly appears to be and feels like it, but the salve did not behave at all like I expected it to.

I'm going to need to do more than wipe it down with a sock like I did on the 1-seater yesterday, otherwise there's going to be a film on top of it. I've got some old ratty bath and dish towels, so it's getting a proper buff out today. It looks great as is with that shine on it, but that's not going to be any good if people get wax on them when they sit on it. Hopefully it doesn't look dull when I get it buffed out and I didn't waste 10 bucks.

ah... leather.

we have had leather sofa and love seat for over 40 years, with one re-upholstery in-between. and i have had a nice leather purse for over 20 years, and i STILL haven't found a leather cleaner/ conditioner that everyone agrees on. and i've looked and looked. the problem is that leather is protein, which needs a little moisture in it to stay pliable. but it also needs emulsified oil to protect the leather and keep the moisture in, but also keep liquid water out so it doesn't rot. when we had our furniture reupholstered i pressed the people pretty hard to recommend a leather cleaner and conditioner, and they refused to tell me.

one thing i learned is that some leather polish has wax in it, which is a very large molecule and can't be absorbed but leaves a nice hard surface that can be buffed to a gloss, especially good for shoes. other formulations have oilier composition that absorbs and keeps leather supple. others have silicone in them, one i tried that was highly recommended actually seemed to do more harm than good (enhanced leather cracking), so i'm avoiding silicone. the one thing i haven't tried is saddle soap and neet's foot oil. gonna try that next on our furniture, altho the leather is deeply deteriorated in some spots. i''let you know how that goes. i figure best to try it now b4 i have the furniture re-upholstered again.

Sis had a good idea, that I could use cotton sheets under my stone "retaining wall". I had an old cotton sheet in my rag basket so I tore it into thirds lengthwise, I rolled the stones out of the way, and put folded strips under the stones. I also built more. But I'm gonna need more stones. Off to the foothills I go!

I also assembled my gardener's tool caddy. Looking forward to not having to make trips back and forth getting this and that tool, and then putting them all back again.

But today was a relatively light day. I have lots to do but Saturdays seem to be my day of rest.

Yesterday was Italian meatballs made with fresh minced basil on spaghetti-style shirataki (calorie free) noodles with marinara and parmesan, asparagus on the side.

Tonight it's traditional beef stew (no potatoes for hubby tho!) with beet greens.

Tomorrow is roast chicken, cauliflower and zucchini with cherries for dessert.

After that the weather gets warmer, so they'll be a lot of salads or coke slaw on the side.

This is what I used:

https://www.howardproducts.com/product/premium-leather-salve/

It's got great reviews. No silicone in it. It's got Lanolin, Neatsfoot, Coconut oil, beeswax and carnauba wax.

The wax might be the problem with my pieces. The pictures of pieces that reviewers had online were TIGHT. The leather is wrapped fairly loosely on the upholstery all around, and VERY loosely on the part where you sit. These are pieces that you can really sink into.

I decided that since I'm not going to be using them right away, I may as well just let the formula sit on it for a few days before wiping them off. Maybe I'll do it tomorrow.

It's also possible that I used too much. It does say that a little goes a long way. I probably used 3 of the 6 ounces on the two pieces. I probably could have gotten away with using 1/3rd of the container instead of 1/2 of it.

Got some cleanup done in the house and garage. Not a ton, but it's progress.

Gave the leather pieces a good wipe down and they still look great. I think I'll leave them for a few more days and do it one more time. I don't seem to be getting anything coming off in my hands anymore, but even with a large bath towel I think I got to the point where I was just smearing it around in some spots. No need to rush since they're not going anywhere for a while.

thanks for the tip on leather conditioner.

i was really busting ass today, and manged to get my household chores done in time to get out there and weed the tree mound.

i tried to level it out but could only go so far because... tree roots. i hope that tomorrow i can finish it by laying down cardboard, wetting it, and throwing wood chip mulch on top. after that, i shouldn't have to worry about weeds there as long as i keep up with the mulch every few years.

after that, heading to the back yard to tame it. once i see what needs to be done i'll call in the gardener crew again and have them dig up weeds from under the avocadoes. when that's done gonna give it the same cardboard/mulch treatment.

I'd say give that stuff a shot if nothing else has worked for you. A day after the first wipedown and it looks really good and smells great. I think one more wipedown with a fresh towel will do the trick and it will look 100 times greater than before I cleaned and treated it.

Good for you for doing all that work. I'm in a funk again myself, but I think that's because of the stuff being all out of place and finding out that floor is going to need 14 to 30 days to cure before I should put the rug and furniture back on it. I hate living like this.

Once you get mulch and other things down, you shouldn't have so much work keeping up with weeds. Putting all that rock down last year cut my non-lawn mowing work by about 50% this year. Once I finally get around to finishing the landscaping in the sandpit and around the back of the house and garage, everything should almost take care of itself.

I'd say give that stuff a shot if nothing else has worked for you. A day after the first wipedown and it looks really good and smells great. I think one more wipedown with a fresh towel will do the trick and it will look 100 times greater than before I cleaned and treated it.

Yard taking care of itself... That's what I'm aiming at! There is a technique called "sheet mulching" where you put down some sort of decomposable material, like cardboard, painter's paper, newspaper, or even old 100pct cotton sheets, and mulch on top of that. The first layer deprives weed seeds and Bermuda grass of light, and kills them off. After 6 months or so-depending- it decomposes. The mulch on top makes it easy to pull any windblown weed seeds that have the temerity to sprout. Everyone swears by cardboard, so dear daughter has been saving up boxes, stripping them of tape and labels and flattening them out. But when I laid them out and watered them,4 of 5 boxes were significantly waterproof. That might be OK for killing a lawn, but I'm trying to do this around an established tree which I really don't want to kill! After researching, I decided on painters paper, so I'll have to take another whack at it when the weather cools down.

But overall another butt-busting day. Aside from the usual, I couldn't sleep, so I spent some quality time at stupid o'clock organizing my e-pictures. At some point I'm gonna ask hubby how to do an MD5sum and toss out all the dupes. I'm glad I have such a smart hubby!

Yeah, it seems a little late in the year for such cold weather!

Over here, my fav news aggregator is talking HEAT WAVE 2023! But when I check the forecast my fair city - while too hot for me to be working outdoors much- isn't even going to break into the 90s (32C). Not unseasonable IMHO.

There was quite a cool breeze yesterday and most of the time I was out. Samething this morning but a little warmer this afternoon.

My city is only hitting the high 60sF or right now around 70F which isn't too bad around here. It is hotter up in the Interior and there is a campfire ban on for the whole province. Not good. The Interior has also gotten many lighting strikes which have started new fires.

Just go into it knowing that it's never going to be perfect. Weeds are ALWAYS going to find a way. But anything you do is going to help.

I didn't go all crazy with it like I usually do on things like these. I used old weed fabric that I'd bought from ALDI like 7 years prior after grading the dirt, and in some spots around the hoastas and on the border it wasn't perfectly cut. Then I threw 10,000lbs of river rock on top of it all.

Did I get weeds coming up this year? Sure. But instead of having 10,000 of them sprouting up in the dirt, I only got maybe 100 or so of them through the rocks. I pulled the bigger ones and then I sprayed the little ones. Something that would have taken me 2 or 3 days to remove by hand or would have looked like a bunch of brown dead crap everywhere if I was lazy and sprayed it all ended up taking about 45 minutes to do this year.

I've still got a TON of weeding work to do as long as that sand pit isn't covered with something, but as I slowly get around to finishing the rest of the landscaping, my weeding job is going to be 1/100th of what it used to be every year.

You'll get there. But just don't get angry when you see more coming up in the years to follow and focus on the fact that it's just so much less than you used to have to deal with.

Good luck at Mahjong, Brenda.

Getting a lot of cleanup and paperwork done today. Not going to get everything out to the trash where it belongs today probably though since it's been pouring rain all day and I don't feel like dragging that all over my porch floor that is still curing, but at least it should be all together and ready to go.

Gotta eventually get myself cleaned up and ready to go run some errands. Got a ton of them to make today... In the rain. :(

Errands in the rain, ugh!

I looked at sis' forecast and I see higher temps and lots of thundershowers that do nothing to cool things off! I suspect that's you, too.

Mostly indoor work here, too. The heat wave did arrive, and it'll be over 90F for about a week. But I did go out early this AM to toss about a yard of mulch around the oak tree, and made a significant dent in the mulch pile that me neighbors have been staring at for quite a while. Also went and picked some avocadoes for the (many) salads that are in our immediate future.

And now, back to work...

Alas I had no luck today. I might of won if one of the ladies I was playing with didn't get a good hand for the last hand. She finished with over 11,000 points, I had about half of that only over 5,000 points.

Maybe tomorrow.

Yeah. Kind of backed myself into that corner with my recent bout of procrastination. I got lucky and it calmed down while I was out. Just a drizzle in some spots.

Yeah. Thunderstorms on and off for about 3 days now. A couple of tornadoes touched down by Chicago and it looked a little sketchy here for a while but we were alright. No real break from the heat though. It's kind of cool out there now in the middle of the night, but the humidity is really high. It's going to be 90 again in 2 days.

Way to keep at it.

Finally feel a little bit of accomplishment today after about a week of not doing much. I still have way too much furniture in my living room, but at least the 1st floor doesn't look like a bomb hit it anymore.

I thought the weather might cool down a bit by next weekend, but the heatwave is gonna persist, so above 90F (32C) for the next ten days predicted. Not this weekend but next weekend I'm gonna head to the foothills - where it's going to be a little over 100F - and help someone measure their yard and maybe, if I have enuf steam in me, pick up some rocks. But we're gonna eat out first and I'm picking up the tab this time since they picked up the tab last time.

Following your lead .. house is gonna get cleaned and organizing gonna start, again!
