Puppy puppy finally looks much better. I'll be convinced she's ok when I see a BM (yeah, I know...TMI).

Someone else must be getting the heavy rain but so far it's been shifting between a light drizzle to a moderate rainfall, with appx 1.5" accumulation.

We did have a bit of excitement today when we felt an earthquake. It was a 5.1 but also about 70 miles away, so people who were standing might not even have felt it. But it did last long enough for us to wonder if it was going to get worse, and I was just beginning to think about moving away from a window.

Now that everyone and everything seems to be back on- track I'm going to nap! Stressing about the dog cost me too much sleep.

Someone else I know over on Face Book just mentioned an earthquake in a post. Yikes! for you all down there.

I'm glad your dog is feeling better Sigs!

Helped my buddy out at his house for the first time in quite a while. He's so close to getting it on the market now. It's amazing how much him and his dad can get done over there when he's working full time too. I can't wait until he gets that albatross off from around his neck!

Weather permitting, I'm helping my other friend out tomorrow. I'm going to go and mow their lawn and edge. He got what sounds like will be a great sales position at a new company and he's out of town for a few weeks for training. Going to hang out with his wife and kid for the day after I'm done mowing and she's going to make me dinner. He told me to take it easy on her if we play pool because she's still learning.

I bet she sends me home with leftovers too.

SIX, I'm telling you, it's impossible to find decent handymen with your experience. At some point you should stop working for friends for food and furniture and branch out to earn actual cash. There can't be too many people around who have your skillset, and that money will come in handy some day (unless the banks just take it away, of course.)

We had an astonishing amount of rain for August. Last night my rain gage threatened to over flow so I measured 2.25", dumped it on my orchid (which really appreciates soft water) and set it out again. Just looking out the window I estimate another 1.25", but I'll measure it later. This has been a strange water year for California: a nearly record-breaking winter rainfall and a hurricane remnant working its way northward over the Sierras. We'll probably go back to our usual extreme drought conditions next year, but this year, the trees are happy! (They can make sap and drive out the beetles that infest them under their bark, so now they won't die.)

Yeah... I don't really need much money though. It would just be numbers added onto the pile since I refuse to spend it on anything that I don't require to live.

My brother who has asthma has been staying doors to keep away from the smoke. He lives in a different city from me and the air is worse there.

Well SIX, as long as that account keeps decreasing it's heading in the wrong direction. Bc as long as it keeps going down instead of going up or at least holding steady, at some point it'll go to zero, and you might be in the same position - albeit farther out in time- as all of the people you laff at.

Do you know, on the average, what your yearly expenses are? Have you calculated how many years your savings will last, based on your current expenses? It might be a useful calculation. I know a lot of ppl who never pencil-whipped that including close family members, and they wound up in trouble. Good karma doesn't pay your bills.

BTW, I don't know about Indiana but here in CA if you're being treated under your state's medical assistance plan for the indigent, they will recover their costs by taking your assets- especially your house - after you die.

Make plans to protect your assets if you want to reap the rewards of all of that hard work you've been putting into it. Look into your state's medical assistance program and especially for all of those gotchas that are often built in

Among all of my other problems I have/had asthma, altho it's EXTREMELY well-controlled with a 10 mg montelukast (Advair) pill. I used to get attacks from perfume... smoke... cold, dry air... exercise... now it only acts up if I get an actual upper respiratory virus. If your brother hasn't tried it, he really might want to ask his doctor about it. If he has tried it and it doesn't work for him, he has my deepest sympathy.

Well, after all that rain I decided to cover a bare-dirt area with all of the cardboard we had saved. (It's in the back, so nobody will mind.) It's the third step in the "sheet mulching" technique which is supposed to kill everything including Bermuda grass. I'll see how it works!

Last meds I knew my brother was taking for his asthma were 2 different inhalers. Not sure if anything else has been added on. He reacts to smoke and perfumes as well. The cold gets to him too now. He needs the exercise for his leg after being hit by a car about 3 years ago now. He has had pneumonia in the past. And all this smoke almost sent him to the ER with his asthma.

Yeah. But like I mentioned before, inflation is always taking a bite even when we don't have idiots speedrunning the devaluation of the American Dollar like we've got now, so the way I look at it is anything I'm saving today that I don't need is just going to be worth half of what it's worth when I get around to spending it.

Of course.

You should see my posts in the Cinema forums. I'm assuming that you haven't ever ventured that way before. I've got a rough idea, but some of that is just prediction based, since the current Administration has proven it's no skin off their nose if they let inflation get out of control to levels that a majority of people in the country living today have never experienced before.

I already know I don't have enough to last me until Social Security rolls in. Even without Bidenflation I wouldn't have had enough to make it that far. I'm not without options though. I do intend to sell this house at some point to move into something much smaller and easier to manage, long before I'm too old for the move and too old to rehab another house. My current home is not a starter home. It's large. It's no rediculous McMansion, but it's large enough where I've had plenty of neighbors comment about how big it is for just one person. I always tell them it's way too big for one person but nowhere near big enough for two.

Are you referring to Medicare/Medicaid, or assisted living/nursing homes for the elderly?

Good advice. Not super worried about it since you can't take any of it with you when you die. I would like to be able to leave everything I've gotten to my brother when the time comes, but who knows... I could very well outlive him. We're only a few years apart. Short of that, I'd want it all to go to my niece, but to her that should just be extra spending money. Her parents do very well and she's a smart kid. As long as they don't screw her up, she should have a pretty productive adult life.

Oh no!

There are a few different inhalers now so I don't know which ones he's taking. There was the old-fashioned epinephrine (like adrenaline) "rescue" inhaler that was basically to stop bronchospasm in emergencies. I used to carry one around. They make people feel a bit jittery when absorbed, a bit like being hypoglycemic but they work fast

Then there is/ was a steroid inhaler that is supposed to be longer-acting and used daily. Also a dry-powder inhaler, same med as I take orally , a leukotriene inhibitor (Advair/montelukast) but I found that the dry powder was irritating so I switched to oral. There are also all kinds of oral meds.

Maybe his doctors have tried a lot of things, but I feel he shouldn't have to suffer like that. I hope you can encourage him to seek out better treatment options so he can breathe more comfortably.

Looks like that's actually a Federal thing, with estate recovery having a basic Federal structure that is demanded from the states, and then on a state-by-state basis they can choose to go after more than what the Feds require.

It appears that the Federal program requires estate recovery for anybody over 55 years old who is either medically institutionalized or in long-term care through Medicaid. If there is a surviving spouse or a kid under 21 years old, they can't start the recovery efforts until the spouse dies and/or the kid turns 21 years old. There are certain instances where a waiver can be attained against the recovery if the recovery process would create undue financial burdens on the survivors. I've read that they can't go after a spouse's estate after death, but then I've also read that they can go after a spouse's estate after death. It's all pretty jargon heavy, but I would like to think they're only able to go after the spouse's estate for money that was obviously placed into a different spot to try and hide it from the recovery process, and they couldn't just take all of the wealth that the spouse legitimately acquired on their own, leaving the kids with nothing.

The Federal program doesn't appear to go after recipients who are on a basic insurance plan consisting of doctor's visits, procedures or drug plans. At least not now, from what I can tell. It looks like these laws are changing and becoming increasingly aggressive on both the Federal and state levels all the time. Makes sense. Medical care gets exponentially more expensive than anything else does over time, and if we actually included that in the inflation numbers they talk about all the time none of us would have lived in a world where inflation was under 20% for the last 40 years.

From what I've read, it appears that states can't go after any expenses incurred on insurance for doctor's visits, procedures or drugs for people under 55 years old, but after they reach 55 years old it's fair game.

But really, it's hard to know how much of any of this is actually accurate since it appears that states are allowed to be much more aggressive in their recovery efforts than the Feds are and they're also allowed to change their own rules whenever it suits them. What is law today might not be law tomorrow.

I wonder how many people there are on Medicaid that don't know about any of this, and then their family gets a nice surprise after their death when anything they thought they were going to get inheritance-wise just disappears before their very eyes. Until today, I've never even heard of Medicaid being referred to as a "loan", but apparently that is exactly what it is.

Huh. The more you know.

Larry Fink wins again. Larry Fink always wins.

If you haven't watched a movie called "I Care A Lot", you should.

I find it pretty humorous that they make a movie where some random sociopathic woman makes Billions off of seniors and their estates when our Federal Government was essentially doing it to all the poverty level seniors since at least the 1990s.

I think you know a lot more about that than I do, by now! Medicaid is essentially money given to the states by the Federal government so each state can run its own medical assistance programs. But like most assistance-to-the-poor programs, there are strings attached.

I'm sure this is all very strange to BRENDA, where they have single payer and everyone is covered, and where medical expenditures per capita are about half that of the USA. But here, the medical sector is one big assistance program to pharma and hospital corporations.

This probably belongs in the "Inflation" thread. But hey, it's something I deal with on a weekly basis everytime I make up a shopping list!

Tuesday is my day to scan the ads for sales. I don't like sending dear daughter and hubby hither thither and yon to too many stores, so I restrict our shopping to a local chain (Stater Bros, which has yet to be bought out by a big corporation) and another store very close by, for those items that can't be found elsehwere.

Wow. Finding good prices is TOUGH! Stater Bros sale papers are getting shorter and shorter. This week, the only sale on meat that I would remotely consider is bone-in sirloin pork chops for $2.99. There is nothing at the other store that I would even consider buying.

I know I mentioned this before, but I used to have "price points": $4/lb (USD, $5.50 Canadian dollars) for trimmed boneless meat, $1.50/lb for organic produce ($2.0 Canadian), $4/lb ($5.50 Canadian) for cheese. Fish is totally unaffordable. And I used to be able to find sales that would get me well below my price points, and those points held for two decades! (Altho I recall, back in 1977, horsemeat was being sold as beef since beef got crazy expensive)

Well!
I've blown past those price points most of the time in the past 6 months, hunting for sales and stocking up the 'meat locker'. My sis in WNY is astonished at the prices here.

But 'crap' is still cheap! Wanna buy crackers, chips, cereal, and booze? They got that covered!

And eating out???
It's been at least 3 years since we've eaten out, and it seems the prices have gone up 50% or more!!

It's crazy. And here I am, trying to construct a decent, healthy, diabetes-friendly menu and grocery list, and my costs keep going up and up...

He's been on all sorts of things for his asthma since he was a child. When my dad was a live, he was in and out of hospital for asthma attacks. I think in high school he was taking oral meds for it. I don't remember any more. As he got to adult hood he was flipped over to inhalers. He told me the colours of the inhalers just before I moved to where I am now. One was yellow and the other purple. One would have been fast acting, like a rescue inhaler and the other long lasting. He does have to carry them with him as he never knows.

I am long past looking after his medical issues. That is his wife's business. And he won't listen to me anyways.

It is still a little strange too me SIG and I know medical care is big business down there.

What little I remember of talking about medical stuff with one of my aunts down there. She had medicare and then added insurance on top? I think. Too many years now since I talked to her about this stuff. This was the aunt in Washington state.

It is still a little strange too me SIG and I know medical care is big business down there.

What little I remember of talking about medical stuff with one of my aunts down there. She had medicare and then added insurance on top? I think. Too many years now since I talked to her about this stuff. This was the aunt in Washington state.

You got that right. The thing about Medicare, tho, is that it's only available to those over 65 AND who've paid into the system for 10 years, or are married to to someone who's paid into the system for 10 years. There are a few other exceptions and loopholes, but EVEN THEN YOU STILL have to pay an insurance premium to maintain coverage.

And since Medicare doesn't cover the entire cost of a procedure, many people chose to buy additional insurance to pay for some of/most of the remainder.

And the billing? It's a nightmare! A hospital will charge different rates depending on which insurance a patient has, or whether they pay cash. So I've seen these "explanation of benefits" which go like...

Infusion with chemo agents (you have to realize this is in much more explicit detail, I'm sumplifying it to reduce the post!)
....$129,070.02
Medicare approves $6,750.27
Hospital accepts that amount, and I may be billed 20% of what Medicare allows...$1,330.01

WTF? Is that $129,070.02 a real charge, or not? (Not. They're just playing games with numbers.)

All that billing bullshit adds at least 20% to the actual cost.

Standard charges, posted, for each procedure and Medicare for all. That's a good start to fixing things!

Well, enuf griping for now. On with the day!

My aunt when I was talking to her about this was well over 65 years of age. She was into her late 80s at the time.

Those numbers hurt my brain just reading them and even at the time I wondered how she afforded treatment for breast cancer, which was radiation and the lumpectomy to remove it. I think that was why she told me she had added insurance to pay for everything.

A cousin who was working at the time had joint replacement surgery on her fingers (both hands) and toes (both feet). I would imagine she had insurance from her work and maybe help from her children who were all adults and working and because of her age maybe she had something else. I have no idea but I sure did wonder.

BRENDA: Thanks. Today was the first time I got a whiff of smoke. I stay as safe as I can. My brother who has asthma has been staying doors to keep away from the smoke. He lives in a different city from me and the air is worse there.

SIGNY: Among all of my other problems I have/had asthma, altho it's EXTREMELY well-controlled with a 10 mg montelukast (Advair) pill.

BRENDA: Last meds I knew my brother was taking for his asthma were 2 different inhalers. Not sure if anything else has been added on. He reacts to smoke and perfumes as well. The cold gets to him too now. He needs the exercise for his leg after being hit by a car about 3 years ago now. He has had pneumonia in the past. And all this smoke almost sent him to the ER with his asthma.

SIGNY Oh no!

BRENDA: He's been on all sorts of things for his asthma since he was a child.

What kind of brother won't give his sister a hearing???

And I know men can be kind of careless about their health and don't like seeing doctors, but I feel his wife should at least try to catch up to the latest developments so maybe he wouldn't be so limited.

Ah, well. They're both adults and you can't make their decisions for them.

So yesterday I spread out cardboard under the avocado tree to keep weeds and grasses from growing. The next step is to cover it with mulch, more for looks than anything.

Today I cut up a small tree that our neighbors had cut down, and a lot of it fell on our side of the wall and needed to be disposed.

Tomorrow I'm going to resurrect a tarp and spread it over part of the "vegetable garden" part of the backyard to kind of put it to bed for the winter, that eat it won't grow weeds while waiting for spring. And the remaining part of the vegetable garden I'm going to spread with shredded remnants of the palm trees that were cut down, again, in the hopes of thwarting weed growth. So I hope that will take care of half of the backyard weeding. Then I'm going to try that "painter's paper" trick that supposed to work better than landscape fabric.

My flower seeds - cosmos, borage, and zunflower- are growing well, and maybe they'll have time to blossom.

It's the strangest thing...

I literally haven't done anything physical all day, but I've NEEDED to eat around 170+ grams of carbs in the last 24 hours. I was LOW for 13% of the day yesterday, and VERY LOW for 2%. My "worst" day on the low end before might have been 6 or 7%?

I know I had a few busy days before today, but all I did yesterday was my my buddy's lawn and edge the pavers and fences. I sweat a lot because of the heat, but it wasn't exactly back breaking work.

I'm almost afraid to go to sleep right now. The last few times I ate didn't really raise me all that high for all that long. My average glucose yesterday was only 93mg/dL even though I ate 170+ grams of carbs and took no rapid insulin.

I did do a finger prick the last time it went down to 45. Finger prick said 68. So yeah... Still LOW on the finger prick test, but not dangerously low like the CGM was saying. But still... With two separate meters and +/-15%, they're within range of each other.

I mean... this would be great news if I can replicate it. But I don't expect tomorrow to go like today went.

I would seriously doubt your CGM, and take more than one fiinger-stick through the entire range of readings before I assumed my body suddenly changed.

I have to refer back to my labwork. If I've run hundreds of samples from the same source (and in this case you prolly have thousands if not tens of thousands of readings from your CGM) and they always fall in a certain range under the same conditions, and I suddenly get a series of readings that's out of whack, historically, the FIRST thing is supect is the instrument, because instruments DO go out of whack (That's the reason why they need intelligent, insightful analysts) and my first step would be to do a calibration check. The second thing I would do is use a second method to confirm the readings.

Well, you can't cal-check your CGM but you CAN confirm your CGM with finger-stick. And what the readings so far are telling me is that your CGM is reading almost 35% low. Not 15%. [(68-45)/68 * 100 ]

Fortunately, you won't kill yourself by boosting your blood glucose, but I wouldn't stress about it UNTIL I had confirmed that the CGM was reading properly across the range (generally you need 7 readings to be statistically significant, ideally 2 or 3 in the low range, since that's the area of most concern, 2 around 100, and 2 above that.)

By now you know how your body responds to diet and exercise, developed over months and several CGM and adjacent finger-sticks, and I would assume that that historic trend still holds true, unless I had verified the change thoroughly with a second method.

Well, I got 3rd place today. I went out on the first 3 hands then got all 4 flowers of one colour which with what else I had in my hand was 6 doubles, so there was over 3,000 points. Then another lady at the table I was kept going out, then the third lady finally went out but she also had winds and dragons in one hand. So, I finished the morning with over 8,000 points. The lady I was playing with who had winds and dragons got first as her final points was over 15,000, then a lady from another table had around 10,000 points then me. So, not a bad morning. Last 3 hands I even went out.

Got a couple of errands done too.

Congrats on the mahjong, and good job on the errands!

Didn't do a whole lot of yardwork today, but I went a bought "builder's paper" to cover the remaining part of the veggies garden (cardboard, tarp, and builder's paper) so I get to see which one keeps the weeds down the best.

It rained on Sunday and Monday and by today, Thursday, the little buggers are already 1/4" tall! I was hoping to have a couple more months to get ready to smother weeds seeds (no rain = no weed sprouts). The untimely rain - welcome as it was in the wildlands- really put a kink in my plans! So now I have to play catch-up, again.

Today is the last day of yardwork for about 6 days. So today is the day I comprehensively spray the effing weed seedlings out front (I was hoping not to have to do THAT again, ever!), give hubby a haircut and beard trim, distribute avocados to our neighbors, order some stuff, and all the usual kitchen work and tidying up. It's going to be a full day for me, and I'm sure I'll be pooped out at the end of the day again.

On with the show!

Yeah... That's why I wasn't getting my hopes up.

The next few days weren't as constantly low, nor did they require so many calories.

Quote:

Well, you can't cal-check your CGM but you CAN confirm your CGM with finger-stick. And what the readings so far are telling me is that your CGM is reading almost 35% low. Not 15%. [(68-45)/68 * 100 ]

I didn't mean to say that the CGM alone was 15% off. But these devices (both finger stick and CGM combined get the +/-15%, and it would get them close if the finger stick was also reading high as well at the same time.

The CGM with this sensor is having that problem where on occasion the number dives very quickly with no explanation for it. It hasn't happened with the last few, but this one is doing it. 15 minutes before it was showing 45 it was showing 70, which was in line with the finger stick 15 minutes later.

Now I didn't test the finger stick after I ate to match the CGM, but had the CGM been leading me astray all day long and I was eating all of those carbs, I wouldn't have gotten anywhere near as low as 68 with the finger stick when I pricked myself. I would have been closer to 200 with how many carbs I ate without doing any physical work.

Quote:

Yeah. I'm not being as crazy about highs as I used to be. Even with my occasional morning between 180-210, and my occasional high days, the 90 day readout for my average glucose is still in the low 120s. As long as I keep my long term average at or under 154 I'm good, so anything below that is great. Now that I've been doing this for going on 4 months, I'm much more concerned about the low numbers than the high numbers just because of how dangerous they can be short term. Especially since I live alone.

Quote:

Yeah. It might be possible that because I hardly ever use the rapid that any work I do the day or two before has longer lasting effects than it used to. I'm still figuring all of this out.

SIX, if there is a "next time" when your body or your CGM - or both- may be acting strangely, I suggest that you take seven finger stick readings in parallel with some CGM readings. Why "7"? Well, for example, both the CGM and the finger stick could have been abberantly low at the same time. Unlikely, but it HAS happened. With eough numbers you can compare the pairs of readings and see if there's a trend (eg one always reading 25 points lower than the other) or not.

*****

Glad you're getting some rain, BRENDA. I hope the rain goddess sends some rain to your interior, too!

Well, I did everything I planned on doing, but I WAS busting butt the whole day! I can sleep righteously tired.

Our heatwave starts tomorrow at 87F (about 30.5C) and climbs to 97F (36C) by Tuesday, then climbs down to more tolerable by Thursday, they say. But these heat waves .... they have a habit of lingering longer and being hotter than originally predicted, so I hope this one behaves itself. The southwest is once aain under and "excessive heat watch". So strange, after such an unusual rain.

Better line up my indoor projects!

Well, for example, both the CGM and the finger stick could have been abberantly low at the same time. Unlikely, but it HAS happened. With eough numbers you can compare the pairs of readings and see if there's a trend (eg one always reading 25 points lower than the other) or not.

Some of that rain did go through the Interior.

Right now my area is sitting at 22C which is 74F but suppose to rise.

I guess, having done yardwork for 4 days in a row, I needed a break bc yesterday I didn't even do the dishes.

Today it's back to work. Puppywuppy took me on a very long walk today and it is blastedly hot. Plus I have about 2-3 hours of dishes and kitchen cleanup. Filing... I did a bit of that yesterday. Don't think I'll finish today but I think I can take a big chunk. And dinner today is pan seared pork chops (marinated in vinegar, salt, and thyme) and cooked with apples and pears. Plus salad.

I did everything except filing. Instead, I distributed avocados to the neighbors, and my last stop with dear daughter was my dog- walking friend, who I haven't seen in a while. They have a new dog, still mostly a puppy named Doogie. So I took puppywuppy over too bc I hoped they might play together, and they did.
When puppywuppy is healthy, despite being 8 yrs old, she's still a playful dog, and she's constantly pestering us to play with her. I feel bad that we're such old farts we don't have much playtime in us. At least she wasn't bored today!
