It's been a bit busy lately. Dear daughter and I went to get our teeth cleaned, then I went with hubby for follow-up with his back surgeon. Meanwhile I'm telling my ENT that my nose, while better under treatment, still isn't good. I can sleep now with the steroid rinse, but it's still puffed up and gooey (TMI, sorry) and I'm dreading running out of that rinse before I get to see her for a followup.
Also, huuby is having his teeth cleaned next week and so is puppy wuppy (Hers has to be under anesthesia, not gonna be a happy camper!)

I did delay two appointments... I had regular annual physical scheduled at the same time I was on oral steroids. My blood sugar and blood pressure were up, and everything was so disordered I felt that a physical would be a waste of time so I asked for it to be rescheduled. Dr is so booked up, earliest is Sept 2024! But that's OK. I'm being seen by so many doctors if there's anything seriously out of whack, somebody will catch it! Also rescheduled my nephrology appt to early next year. Since I didn't have any blood tests ordered and evaluation is by blood test, just showing my face at Dr office would be pointless. By next visit I'll have had a regular oncology blood test which will include the usual kidney function tests - creatinine and BUN- so at my next appt there will be something to look at.
Radiologist looked at my 2nd CT scan and wants ANOTHER followup! Not reassuring but at least somebody is keeping on top of those strange lung lesions. Anyway duty calls!

There was the getting chores done, true.

That's the thing with the game. If you have a pair of good tiles and someone is sitting on the other two, they probably won't throw them thinking that they might pick them up or someone else will throw them. That was part of my problem yesterday. Someone was sitting on the tiles I needed. Twice I almost had all 4 flowers of one colour but someone always got the 4th one.

Back and in for today on the last sunny day in September for now. Suppose to rain tomorrow and into next week.

But my hearing aides are straightened out. There was some gunk stuck in one of them and the piece was unjammed. The guy thought I had battery ones and I said no they were rechargeable. Also said don't worry if I don't get the tones all the time. It happens.

Also got a birthday card into the mail. It's going to Alberta.

Everything starts with an idea.

Oh, yes indeed!!!

And what a lovely idea it is, too! I finally realized that what the yard needs is a lot of low-growing, permanently green, weed-smothering, wildlife-friendly groundcover to look more like a lawn, with some flower garden areas and mulched maintenance and viewing pathways.

The big features are already there. On each side of the front yard (it is divided unequally by the entry walkway) is a tree mound, and each mound has an larger established tree on it. On one side is a native CA oak that I planted about 10 years ago, on the other is a "Norfolk Island pine", sometimes known as a Star pine, planted by the original owners. (It isn't a pine altho it looks like one. Its closest relative is the monkey puzzle tree)

I'm redoing the oak mound because there was landscape fabric under the rocks surrounding the mound, making weeding impossible, and the whole thing had been constructed with a lower slope. I'm making the slope more vertical and underlaying it with cotton cloth and/or builder's paper. That's what I needed the bigger rocks for.

Also, there was a "stream bed" from the downspout to a swale, but the path was too indirect (off to the far side of the tree mound) and there was, in essence, a dam across the "stream bed" causing water to pool close to the house. So I dug a more direct stream bed (on the nearer side of the tree mound) and extended the swale all the way around the base of the tree mound to meet it. But that's why I was stressing about oak tree roots bc I was disturbing an appx 90 deg arc.

And then ... and I don't know how this happened ... the oak side of the yard is SIGNIFICANTLY higher than the other. So I'm cutting down the high side and moving dirt to the other. At this point, I need to cut down the robust ashy-leaf buckwheat, which is growing over a large part of that high side. But I saved that for last, now that the flowers are old and there are no more pollinators feeding there.

AFA the groundcover is concerned, I have four likely candidates, possibly five:

Pigeon point dwarf coyote brush (baccharis pilularis). about 18" and 10 ft wide, extremely drought tolerant. Will probably go at the curb, sincee that area won't get much water. Flowers in late summer. The flowers are insignificant to us, but native pollinators really go for them.

Carmel Sur manzanita, about 1/2-1' high and up to 10' wide (altho 7' more typical) Better at withstanding drought and likes some shade, so ... under the oak, which hates summer water. Flowers are sparse, but when it does flower they are bell-shaped and come in winter. Hummingbirds like them.

Emerald carpet manzanita, needs water 2X/ month than Carmel Sur, flowers more profusely and also bell-shaped flowers in winter, loved by hummers. About 1' high and up to 10' wide. Next to the walkway

Trailing lantana, a non-native, volunteered, and loves where it is. Also needs water 2X/month. Purple and white flowers in summer, loved by smaller butterflies like skippers. Can grow to 18"-24" but can be sheared down. Next to the walkway. I know this is weed-smothering because of how its growing already.

A fifth possible candidate is Sonoma sage (salvis sonomaensis), a gray-leafed lowgrowing sage with beautiful cobalt-blue flowers. I know it's NOT weed-smothering bc I have it growing in back, but maybe interplanted with Pigeon Point it can contribute to the color.

Now the exciting part are the flowers. I intend to have CA fuschia on the outer part of the tree mound, . I know it will grow well there bc I had it there already.

And in the corner of the walkway and curb, beach daisy (erigeron Wayne Roderick) which I know will do well bc it's growing there already

A finger-like silver succulent whose name I don't know, which is also growing there already
A pop of color, probably "paprika" yarrow, which will be an experiment
typical

And if I can find a source, coast buckwheat
typical

and if not, cliff buckwheat. Blooms in later summer, loved by all pollinators.
And SOMEWHERE, I'll have a sage. I don't know what kind or where, but sages are incredibly important to pollinators. Also, a couple of coffeeberry bushes as foundation plants, which are very suburban-looking shrubs that are natives and bird and pollinator-friendly.

Speaking of pollinators:

As I was doing yardwork yesterday (I don't consider re-grading to be 'gardening') I checked out the bloomers to see what was what. I threw out a bunch of seeds very late, and now have sunflowers, cosomos sulphureus (lemon yellow to tangerine orange) and cosmos bipinnatus (white to pale pink to lavendar) blooming in one bed, and a low-growing native verbena (often used as a lawn substitute) growing in the grass. The monarchs, honeybees, native bees, skippers and other butterflies were over everything.

In the front I have an impressive patch of beach daisy and goldenrod and lantana, and some native bees (I think they're called glass-winged bees) and honeybess and skippers are all over the flowers, and I think what I saw was a buckeye butterfly.

In 1.5 hours I got 2/3 of the ashy-leafed buckwheat cut down. I should be able to finish tomorrow. But I learned something intersting about it... the reason why it was so large is because it wasn't just one shrub anymore, it was a bit of a colony. THIS bush apparently rooted in a few places where branches touched the ground. I've NEVER read of that happening. I'll try to dig up some of the smaller "babies" and see if I can save them.

For some strange reason, everyone felt a desperate need to talk to me today. Even a round-the-corner neighbor, someone I had never seen before, stopped her truck on the road on her way home to chat with me (for 30 minutes!) when I was out trying to do yardwork!

Despite that, I managed to get something done, altho not as much as I had hoped. That shrub is cut down to the nubs, and i have a clear view of it, and the two new plants it created. I have to take to dog in for a teeth cleaning tomorrow AM, and that's going to throw a giant kink into my day, and the next day is hubby's Dr appointment, which I go to, so I think Thursday is the next day to tackle yardwork.

Just as an aside, it was SO rainy so late into this year is seems there was hardly any strawberry crop. I look forward to fresh strawberries in spring and early summer, but prices were enormous and supply was low. So I guess not everybody benefits from a lot of rainfall! OTOH I'm assuming our groundwater supply's been replenished somewhat, and that the trees, which were gasping for water for years, are a lot happier.

Oh, many things to deal with at this end!

But on a positive note, one of my sisters sent me a packet of cosmos sulphureus (deep tangerine orange to lemon yellow) seeds this year, and that inspired me to sow out the sunflower seeds I had saved from last year plus some leftover cosmos bipinnatus (white, maroon, lavender and pink), with self-sown borage. I delight every time I look across the backyard and see monarchs, Gulf fritillaries, cabbage and sulfur butterflies, bees of ALL kinds, skippers, and wasps dicing over the flowers.

It's quite a stress-reliever!

Well, that and the steroids I'm on for chronic sinusitis.

On with the kitchen work!

It was a good day.

I got a birthday card from the whole group. I had 5 hands with 4 of more doubles in them. I finished the morning with over 17,000 points. My first good or rather great hand had 8 doubles in it. BRENDA: It was a good day. I got a birthday card from the whole group. I had 5 hands with 4 of more doubles in them. I finished the morning with over 17,000 points. My first good or rather great hand had 8 doubles in it. All 4 flowers of one colour then my extra flower and whatever else I was collecting. I don't remember now. But that was shocker for sure.

Well, I don't know about you, but this sounds like the kind of day that won't be topped for another four months, so... enjoy the glow! May it carry you all the way to Xmas!

Well, one dark spot on this day. Power outage in my building around 5pm. Don't know what happened but it lasted almost 15minutes. Good thing I wasn't cooking anything for supper when it happened. I had a left over sandwich which was my supper.

Puppywuppy had her teeth cleaned and vet found a zillion more teeth that need extraction. I'm so upset bc I've been diligently brushing her teeth since the last set of extractions, being on the lookout for bleeding gums or discolored teeth and I didn't see any sign of trouble. (And if you want to see a sight that's funny, you should see me tracking the dog down with her toothbrush in my hand.)
So believe it or not, there is a vet who specializes in dog and cat dentistry, not too expensive if a little far away. I'm going to try and arrange for a 2nd opinion.

Then, hubby had his Dr appt, and we found his A1C had gone up despite, IMHO, a well-controlled diet.

I was sure Dr was going to suggest insulin but there is a drug out there that supposedly does all kinds of wonderful things for T2D, so he's going to try that.

And while I was leveling the front yard (still) I discovered a bee hive in our water meter box. Considering where they've chosen to nest and how they were behaving, I don't think these are our friendly Euro honeybees. So working well away from that, but I called the beekeeper that took away the hive that we had a few years ago. Am eagerly waiting for his return call!

Despite all that going on, the yard is beginning to look less crooked. I've got a few more yards of dirt to move, or maybe I'll need to buy some, but it's looking better. I WAS going to run a string level parallel to the curb, but that right over the bee hive and I don't want to be digging there. But I have other places to work.

Over here puppywuppy's walk all done. Working on kitchen cleanup, and ground beef defrosting for dinner.

We're on the back side of a cold (well, cool) front. Sunny, cool, breezy, some puffy white clouds in the sky. Perfect weather IMHO.

So I hope to get to more yardwork today. I cut down the ashy leaf buckwheat and dug out most of the mound it was on, and xferred it to the other side of the yard
But in order to see the rest of the grading I need to dig up and save as many plants as I want to keep in prep for the ultimate cleanup, for which I will hire a crew, which includes removing the lantana from the foundation area.

Staying away from the water meter box until the beekeeper collects or destroys the hive in there. If it wasn't there I would be working on the berm next to the curb and putting down weed barrier (builder's paper) and mulch. But I have so much to do that it doesn't matter exactly where I work.

In any case, it's going to heat up by Wednesday, plus I have 2 more(!) medical appts this week... I hope these are the last for this month!... so I'm sure I won't get very far in my plans B4 I have to xfer work to indoors.
