I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

I did my best to save 6 lantana plants and 3 ashy leaf buckwheat "babies", but I disturbed the roots so much I'd be very surprised if they survive. Still, I did my best, I can't do any more than that, so one side of the front yard is ready for total cleanup. I also x-planted some iris roots that a neighbor gave me many years ago. Dwarf iris of the most beautiful deep deep purple. I've been limping them along in a pot that's way too shallow, which is why they never bloomed. They're in a deeper, bigger pot now so I hope to see blooms this spring.

On the other side of the yard is a creeping Oregon grape (mahonia repens) in a place where it's really very unhappy bc too much sun. (I have others of the same in much happier places).

Also a volunteer berberis of some kind, sold to me as "repens" but at 6' tall clearly not creeping! I'll try to save both, altho I'm not too hopeful that they'll survive either. But my friend in the foothills would be interested in a lot of the plants, if they survive.

Gave myself a teeny tiny scratch but it bled like crazy, and dripped all over my sweats. Good thing these are my gardening clothes.

Mr Beekeeper will be stopping by sometime in the next few days whether I'm home or not to either take the bees or destroy them and we'll settle up later.

Altogether a useful day.

Got back from work around 4:30 today. Now, I am waiting to see if my boss is taking me and another person out to lunch tomorrow.

Weather lady said we had 11 days of rain for September but there was only 33mm of it. Usually we are at over 55mm. But still it is helping.

Computer glasses are ready and I will pick them up on Thursday afternoon. Got the call today while I was out.

Also a soggy first day 2nd day of October.

Back from mah jong and lunch. The place where I play mah jong put on a Turkey day lunch and I ordered it. Not bad.

Sitting now with my new computer glasses on. Work really well. I no longer want to mash my face into my computer screen. But the frames are almost the same as my bifocals. So I will have to find a new place for my bifocals to hang out as they are usually around my computer.

My ENT looked at my sinus CT scan and then examined them, and they're a horror show of goop, polyps, inflammation, and scabs. She recommends an allergist/ immunologist who is experienced with yet another "mab" (monoclonal antibody) that shuts off two interleukins pathways, specifically geared towards ppl with sinuses and nasal passages just like mine. But the Dr she recommended doesn't accept Medicare, so now I have to hunt around for one that does that's also experienced with this med. In the meantime , she suctioned out goop and scabs, took a culture, and shoved a couple of dissolvable stents into my maxillary sinuses.

Sigh

Another doctor! I'm putting off seeing a general surgeon for the hiatal hernia bc it doesn't bother me that much, and I think a consult is purely optional. But I really, really need to fix my sinuses bc I can't sleep with such a stuffy nose, and I'm getting seriously sleep deprived.

Well... Quite a strange happening today.

The front quarter of the body of my lawnmower just decided to quit and broke of the back 3/4ths. That's a new life experience for me.

I think I must finally be growing up a bit in my old age. Instead of kicking it and cussing up a storm I just got a great laugh out of the absurdity of it all. 2023 is just a year for the books.

Gotta look on the bright side of life. Since the mower was still engaged until I figured out why it decided it wanted to start burrowing into the earth and digging a hole to China, I'm considering myself quite lucky that the blade didn't snap off and gouge my leg or cut my head off too.

Got it done with a neighbor's lawnmower. I can't imagine I'm going to figure out a way to keep her going any further with duct tape and electrical wire this time without risking life and limb, so to the garbage pickers this week she goes. I suppose it's time to look at Craigslist and buy one of those nice mowers somebody bought on credit and has to sell so they can buy food.

After the second nasal culture I'm on my third round of antibiotics, a different one again. If this doesn't do the trick I'm going to boogie over to Infectious Disease dept, bc ENT wouldn't have figured it out in three tries.

The first culture was normal, the second... only a month later... showed massive infection by two unusual bacteria. But I'd been symptomatic for a few months before that, which I why I went to see a Dr in the first place. So how can a culture go from "normal flora" to "OMG" in one month (after two rounds of antibiotics)? The only thing I can figure is that it was all in (a) sinus(es) that were swollen shut, but that one of them started draining, along with the bacteria.

Yeah. It's kind of nutty. Nobody I've shown pictures of it to has ever seen or heard of this even happening before. I know the thing was around 12 years old, and I know I didn't tip the thing over to clean out the wet grass when I was done mowing and I know that my lawn is like having grass on the surface of the moon because of the mole activity, but how thin could that body have been to have rusted right through like that?

There were a few times where I'd pulled the thing backward yesterday to get around obstacles like the street sign and it cut really low. That should have been my warning something was amiss, but I just thought I screwed up with how I pulled it. I never would have suspected that it had cracked on both sides and the blade wasn't cutting straight and I was just about 30 minutes away from catastrophic failure. It didn't make sense to me until after the front part snapped clean off.

There's also a bar attached to the back side of the mower that goes to the front wheels on the left side, which was wound up super tight with springs, so the part that broke off with the front wheels is still attached and upside down. I wonder if they knew the body was too thin and this was a "safety feature" they implemented in case the body broke like this? It probably had another purpose, but I don't know what it would be.

It is a bummer. That was an expensive lawnmower, and with the size lawn I have I don't want to buy anything cheap since it will take even longer to mow if I don't get another good one. At least it happened at the end of the season. I might need to mow one more time. I let my neighbor use mine about a dozen times over 2 seasons before, so I don't feel bad about asking to use theirs again while I search for a deal.

My buddy said "why don't you buy a rider with that lawn"? I told him because I'd need to buy a regular mower to get all the parts a rider couldn't anyhow, and a new rider costs as much as I want to spend on a used car, and since I don't think I'll be able to pass the emissions test in May next year, I'd rather have another car. He told me to buy a rider that I can drive on the street.

I finally .. FINALLY...got back to real yardwork. It seems like the past # of days have been dedicated to paperwork or it's computer equivalent. Making appointments, cancelling or delaying appointments, two birthdays and Halloween coming up, getting money back that somebody owed us ...

Apparently the bee guy had to destroy the hive in our water meter box bc they were "killer" bees. I'm not surprised. Nesting in the ground isn't typical for Euro honeybees, plus I watched the bees for a while and they moved a lot faster and seemed more agitated than normal.

Anyway, I weed whacked to back lawn which was long overdue, and daughter cleaned up the mess under the avocado trees. Tomorrow is shopping day, but I can get outside a do a bit more cleanup... probably cut down the sunflowers and make a space for my supplies on the back porch.

Well,the property is intentionally pollinator -friendly. Something for everyone- bees, butterflies, bumblebees, moths, hummingbirds and wasps. Even birds.

Also, rats, possums, squirrels, skunks, SKINKS and lizards, and the occasional racoon and rare coyote. Not on purpose, but those avocados are big attractions. I wish I could attract a nesting pair of owls to the neighborhood. The rats would feed them nicely!

I never did get outside today.... daughter got some kind of GI bug last night and was sick all day. Lomotil and Pepto Bismol really help, but I've been checking in with her every hour or so. Also, hubby wanted help in picking out b'day gifts. All in all, a day of interruptions.

It could be very pretty! Just needs a pot, a minimum of about a foot wide and maybe 9" tall, a bag of potting soil, and seeds (preferably organic seeds since most commercially available seeds are treated with neonic pesticides, which seep into the plant and make the nectar and pollen somewhat toxic to pollinators.)

I read an article about a couple living in Chicago about 10 stories up who made their rooftop a pollinator garden, and they see all kinds of pollinators there. So, yes, pollinators fly that high. AND they have a pretty show of flowers to look at.

Back from my walk and there is a notice in the elevator about a problem with one of the water pressure pumps. Manager says there is a plumbing company working on it. Just have to be patient.
