It is awkward for sure. I'm still walking pretty good. I should be alright until they are fixed what with tomorrow being Sunday and I don't do anything anyways.

Are they working now?

Have to say, those antibiotics are powerful stuff. They started working with the first rinse. My nose is still incredibly stuffed, but the green goo (yeah, TMI) is almost completely gone and I slept thru the night. FINALLY, three rounds of antibiotics and two rounds of steroids and several different kinds of rinses and sprays, SOMETHING is working!

I know you know this, but MAKE SURE YOU TAKE THEM ALL!!!!!!!

I just watched a video last week about a woman who got C diff after a round of antibiotics that she didn't complete.

Nasty stuff.

Glad you're feeling better.

Don't know. I don't go anywhere on Sunday unless I have too. I will know tomorrow when I got out to get a bit more groceries.

I am always careful. I stop when I have to stop walking up and down.

Fingers crossed that this finally clears you all up SIG.

Don't worry about the green goo. I had a sinus infection once with similar gunk in my nose and such.

I've been sanding down my kitchen/porch door and the jamb by hand for hours this morning. It's finally done.

I didn't realize in all the years I lived here and/or didn't pay it any mind just how much that door scraped up against the jamb when it shut. It appears that at some point somebody shimmed out the top and middle hinges, but not the bottom, and wouldn't you know it... the top of the opposite side of the door rubbed itself raw over the years. Not only that, but there was like 10 coats of paint of different colors to remove. You can't do a bad job hanging a door AND not sand down old coats of paint and not expect this to happen.

I was going to try removing one hinge at a time and remove those shims and see what happened, but they're HEAVY DUTY hinges with 10 screws each. This is a solid wood core door, likely the original entry way door before the addition was put up so it dates back to the 60's. Not only that, but some of the screws are obviously stripped. If I even attempt to move anything, I might not be able to get that door back up.

So sanding down everything it was.

Not just enough that it wouldn't rub anymore, but enough that it wouldn't rub and I can still put a coat of primer and at least one coat of paint on both surfaces. Everything else is going to get 2 or 3 coats, but I don't want to push it too much where it was rubbing. At least the door is in there rock solid and didn't shift at all with all the abuse today.

But I didn't want to make a huge mess in the kitchen, so it's all been done by hand with 60 grit paper and a block of wood. In the meantime, I removed the old peephole from it, put in a little backer rod and filled the ends with wood putty that is still quite a ways away from drying.

I vacced everything up and now I'm taking a little break. I would have loved to have gotten a coat of primer and at least the 1st coat of paint today before I wrap up, but I think that peephole is going to slow me down big time.

I've got 3 more days after today before it gets cold out. Hopefully I can get it painted and give it enough drying time that nothing sticks and peels off paint before it gets cold out. It's not the end of the world if I have to wait a while to close that door totally since the porch is now insulated, but I'd rather not be heating the porch too when it gets cold out.

Bonus is that the squeaky hinges were driving me nuts so I finally put some 3-in-1 oil on them and the door doesn't squeak anymore. Bad news is, those hinges are staying put, so I can't swap them out with oil rubbed bronze hinges. I'll have to figure out a way to clean them up on the doors and paint them up good at some point.

Grocery shopping done for today and one elevator was working as I was going out. So that was good. Could hear workmen talking in the second shaft and that one is working which is a good thing as it goes down to the parking garage where the garbage and recycling bins are. Garbage is now out because of that one working.

Door is primed and I added more wood putty in spots that needed it to dry overnight. Hopefully the peephole putty is dry tomorrow and I can sand it all down and get to painting right away.

I also filled the holes on the jambs for the overlook, sanded them down and hit it with a 2nd coat of primer. I had some jambs for my small livingroom window I cut a few years ago and primed them so I can get them up for when I trim out my living room windows soon.

That great big rainstorm is turning into the great disappearing rainstorm.
I expect we'll get something Wed-Fri, I just don't know how much.

But it was a good prompt to get more yardwork done since rain eventually means weeds, so I finished the weed barrier up to the oak tree mound. Also, we have crappy plastic gutters and a gutter joiner shifted and opened up, so I had to bang in back into place with a small hammer. Done!

I still have a day before the rain, so tomorrow maybe I'll make the neighbors happy and spread mulch over the builder's paper that I'm using as a compostable weed barrier.

*****

The orange, yellow, pink, magenta and white cosmos are still blooming, and it looks so cheerful every time I look across the yard. Especially when I see white cabbage butterflies, sulfur (yellow) butterflies, monarchs and skippers (small golden -brown) butterflies fluttering thru.

*****

Well, I'm using the Rx'd antibiotic powders and steroid in my nose rinse. Not sure it's making a difference just yet, but I discovered it's so much more pleasant -and possibly more effective - if I warm it slightly before rinsing. Also I'm sanitizing everything every day so I don't carry germs over from day to day in my nose sprays and rinse bottles. I've given up expecting to breathe thru my nose, at least for now, and am trying to adapt my sleep to that. So trudging forward on the medical front.

Drat!

I forgot before I went to sleep that I needed to build up some wood putty around the door jamb by the door handle strike, and that I wanted to add some inside the door itself because the top screw for the plate wasn't grabbing on anything.

I just did that, and put a very light fan on it to try to speed the drying up without cracking anything.

Peepholes dried. I sanded them, primed them, and then put just a light 2nd application of wood putty over it that won't take long to dry before I sand it and hit it again with primer. I may just take the time to prime the entire front and back of the door one more time after sanding down the wood putty on the damaged areas since I'll be waiting a while for the wood putty on the jamb to dry anyhow.

I'm not even going to bother with the lawn today. I got a billion leaves from my neighbors last night. I think I'm done trying to keep up with that until their trees finally finish falling. I'll probably go back and mow my maple leaves up when everyone else's leaves have fallen and I can blow them all away. At least they're trying to keep up with it this year, so I can't get angry about it.

Well... since I'm probably going to be waiting around on drying anyhow, I decided to do something about the hinges now before any paint goes on. Boy am I glad i did. I'm sure there are pro spray painters, but I'm not one of them.

I just taped off the hinges on both sides and cut off squares of plastic sheeting to give myself a lot of room for error. It's a bit difficult to do on both sides of a door simultaneously. The side that the door swings in doesn't want to hold the plastic at all unless you do it right.

I've got some spray primer up there now. I still have some of my oil rubbed bronze spraypaint from back when I used up a lot of it making something for my brother a while back. I've since used it to spray some screw heads but I thought I finished the can. There doesn't seem to be a lot in there, so I doubt I'll be able to finish them with the can. I'll probably have to run out and get more.

Better to have this done now than when finished paint was up everywhere. I don't think I got any on my finished walls yet, but I'll find out when everything comes down. Hopefully I don't have shadows around the plastic.

It's not the end of the world if I have to touch up that wall. It's the smallest wall on the 1st floor with just a few feet to the right of the door, the space over the door and a couple of feet behind the fridge but once it hits the cabinets it's tiled to the corner. There was a little crack in the wall above the doorway that's been bothering me anyhow, so when this is all done I might patch that and repaint that small section of wall anyhow.

I'm pretty sure that crack was from closing the door hard because of it rubbing on the jamb. Now that it closes real nice it probably won't come back as long as nobody slams it shut.

I might have finished the door today. I want to see what it looks like in daylight to be sure. It's only got two coats of paint on the two coats of primer instead of three, but it was rolled on so they're hefty coats. If I do anymore it's just going to be rolling the front and the back.

Boy am I glad I did those hinges first. I don't know what I was thinking yesterday when I thought I'd get to them later. I didn't make a mess of my kitchen wall, but I did miss a little bit on the door itself as well as the jamb out to the porch. Easy fix compared to what I'd have been fixing down the road. Now the hinges match all the other hinges on finished doors in the house as well as the kitchen cabinet hardware.

Door closes super smooth now. I'm afraid if I painted a 3rd coat on it that it won't anymore though. I've been using a postcard to slide in between it when the door is closed and it still moves freely but I can tell it's tight now. I'm hoping nothing related expands in the heat of the summer. I thought about that today when it was too late to do anything about it. That door isn't going to budge, but the jamb might.

I also put two coats of paint on the jambs for the kitchen overlook and my three pieces I'm going to use to make jambs for the small living room window.

Still didn't get outside to do any yard work though. I hate when the sun goes down at 4:30PM.

Our doors regularly stick and get loose again. Here it seems to be more a matter of humidity than temperature.

What is a "kitchen overlook"? I'm still trying to piece together the various parts of the house as you described, but I'm confused!

Oh yeah, that time change! It sure cuts the day short! I used to plan on working until 5 or 6 outdoors. No more!

Yeah. Good point.

I noticed to my great dismay, that the caulked seams on door/window trim I put upstairs would separate and then come back together at some of the miters in the year or two I finished them but before I got the A/C unit. I would think that low humidity would be the reason for that, but it appears that they're all fine now that the A/C keeps the humidity out during the summer and the humidity in the house stays pretty much the same year round. I also haven't noticed my bathroom door getting stuck for a couple of years too, but I will make sure to sand that one down a bit where it needs it just in case too.

Whenever I get around to building whatever I'm going to build I can show you pictures.

My house is a stupid tri-level with wide open access to both the 2nd floor and basement, with the stairs up to the 2nd floor on the right and the stairs to the basement on the left. In the kitchen on that wall, just to the left of the staircase, the wall goes from the ceiling down only to about 2.5 feet from the floor where it is jambed out. The wall goes all the way down to the floor on the left side of the kitchen for about 1.5 feet, and on the right side next to the stairwell there is a post that joins up with the stairs to the basement that is covered in drywall and has the right jamb attached to it on the left side of the post (if you're looking down into the basement).

When I first moved in there was a decorative, brown cast-iron "grate" installed inside of it that matched the cast-iron banisters. I hate cast-iron inside houses, so all that is going to be replaced.

I think I'm actually going to buy a 3/4" board for the bottom "jamb", round the long edges on both the kitchen and basement sides with a roundover router bit, then install simple wooden cylindrical coat hanger stock inside of it, spaced however far apart I can get away with spacing it per code. Let's just say that it's a huge code violation right now, because if you had a baby crawling on the kitchen floor it could get to that edge and fall about 3.5 feet onto hard ceramic tile in the basement.

:(

In any event, I decided that I don't need to have all of that done before I painted the jambs and get my trim up there. It might not be functional for a while but at least it can look good until I get there.

Picture Time

This f'kn eyesore of a kitchen door has been haunting me for years. My friend's dad who helped me with the porch last year told me I had to do something about it because the porch looked like a Cadillac with a missing hubcap.

If you notice behind the fridge I already put down baseboard exactly to the length it needed to be. That's been done for over 2 years now after my friend and his dad helped me cut and lay down the flooring in the kitchen.

The door had some big damaged spots, some holes where there used to be one of those chain locks, dirty ass old hinges and a peep hole without any glass inside of it that seemed to be a home for a spider and its webs more often than not.

I did some minor sanding on the door before putting 2 coats of primer on it, but I didn't get crazy with the sanding like I would have if I could have gotten the door down and on horses outside just because I didn't want dust all over my house. There were 4 spots that bled through 2 layers of primer and 2 coats of paint, but the third coat of paint seemed to finally stop the bleed through.

The door handle was new though. When you see the finished picture below from inside the porch you'll see why. The way they built it so close to the jamb was terrible. I've only ever slammed my fingers inside it once with a traditional door knob over the years, but nearly everybody else has done it at least once, with one of my friends doing it almost every time he's been here helping me out.

There's an up close look at the formerly bronze hinges that had paint and stain put on it because apparently everybody else who's ever worked on this door was just as afraid as I was to try to take it down first but they couldn't be arsed to actually try to protect it or be careful while working. You can see about 5 different colors of paint on that door jamb too, so it's probably all the original exterior door before porch was added.

Here you can see the damage to the side of the top 1/3rd of the door from scraping against the jamb.

On the top left of the picture you can see a soffit that I'm sure at one point had an over-the-fridge cabinet installed, but that would have been when fridges were much smaller I'm assuming. When I did the cabinets in the kitchen I had to re-face the side of the one on the end because the top half of the cabinet had no face on it. This would have been because the over-the-kitchen cab butted up against it, and nobody bothered refacing the side after taking that cabinet down. I wanted to remove the soffit entirely, but it turned out there was electrical inside of it. So I had to shorten it about 4" and wrap it back up. It used to go all the way out to the door jamb when there was smaller trim around the door, but I had to make it short enough that my nice new wide door trim would fit.

You can also see out into my finished porch as well. I'm not sure if I ever posted any pictures of that. In the far corner in the ceiling you can see one of the two ceiling vents I added for smoke. Even without smoking it does a nice job of pulling in air from outside to cool it down at night.

The fridge is the one my buddy and his wife gave me last winter when her father passed away. It was only a year old. In the porch on the far wall (In the next picture) you can see the faux fireplace/TV stand that they gave me to for helping repaint his man cave. That air fryer on the table was also a gift from them for work I'd done around their house.

The oriental rug was a gift from my Grandmother before she passed years ago. It had been rolled up and wrapped and hanging in the rafters of my garage ever since I dehorded the house and got rid of the mice problem back in summer of 2019. The clock hanging on the wall in the kitchen was the clock that was hanging in my other Grandmother's house before she passed this year.

LOL... I just realized that I had a magnet my aunt gave me when she visited a friend in Colorado with my real name on it. I had to re-upload both of those pictures with my name blacked out.

HOURS AND HOURS of sanding the side of that door and the jamb and it swung close without any resistance. Even better that I used some 3-in-1 oil and finally made it stop squeaking because that was freakin' driving me nuts while I was working.

That's how I wrapped the hinges to prime and paint them after I'd sanded them down good. Worked out pretty well with very little collateral damage

You can also see the wood putty inside the peep hole here. I filled most of the inside with a piece of foam backer rod for caulking and filled wood putty about 1/2" on the outside of each side of the door. If I filled the entire thing with wood putty I would have had to wait a week or two for all that putty to dry before sanding it down and priming it.

One of the finished hinges. Oil Rubbed Bronze Rustoleum spray paint to match all the other hardware. It ain't a perfect match out of a spray paint bottle and is really more a black paint with metallic flecks in it, but nobody will ever know the difference. It's the same paint I did all the internal hardware in the kitchen cabinets.

The finished door.

You can see how close that soffit is now to the white trim. Had I not moved the soffit back 4 or 5 inches from where it used to be, I was going to have to cut away a lot of the top left corner of the trim and that would have looked dumb.

It took me FOREVER to install the deadbolt and I had a bit of collateral damage that I need to fix tomorrow, but the handle was perfect on the first time. With the weight of the solid door you can just throw it closed and all you hear is the perfect click of the door handle catching the strike. After that, just turn the key and the deadbolt engages perfectly. Everything fits nice and tight... But not TOO tight.

Here's a shot of the door from inside the porch. You can see what I'm talking about with the door knob. EVERYBODY slammed their fingers in that door with a regular knob, but nobody will do it anymore with this handle style.

I need to install a new threshold and take care of the collateral damage before I install my new sweep on the bottom of the door on this side. That's a project for next year when it gets warm again.

But at least it doesn't look like a Cadillac with a missing hub cap anymore.

Here's the overlook into the basement that I was talking about. I trimmed that out while I was waiting for the door to dry enough to attempt putting on the door hardware.

I don't know if you ever really saw the new kitchen flooring I installed with my friend and his dad's help a while back, but you get a good look at it here. I LOVE the way that pattern looks and it was super easy to install compared to a traditional square tile pattern that would have taken a lot more math and thought to center in the room.

You can see two of the three matching throw rugs I bought after putting the floor in for about $8 each and they've paid for themselves a million times over. I do most of my walking in there on them and the floor looks as new as the day it was put in because of them.

Here's another shot of the overlook with the baseboard finally finished in the kitchen after all this time and another angle of those nice fresh painted hinges.

Tomorrow I'll probably tap down the 2 brad nails that didn't sink properly, spackle all the nail holes and caulk the miters so I can get the final coat of paint on all the new trim.

Now I've got to think about what I'm going to do to "gate off" the overlook because I'm sure as hell not putting the brown cast-iron crap back up after all this work.

Oh... and that's the two-tone grey I was talking about a few years back. With the living room included, there's actually three grey colors. The three walls in the kitchen are just a little darker than the three walls in the living room, and the wall that both the kitchen and living room share where the overlook and the stairwells are located is the accent wall with the dark grey color called "antique pewter". Everyone LOVES that color. In fact, when we painted my friend's man cave he wanted the exact same colors I used in my living room, and we used the Antique Pewter color for his accent wall and for any pipes and exposed electrical he had down there and it really pops!

I see what you mean by kitchen overlook. I've never seen anything like that before. I wonder what the purpose was? Ventilation? Is it common in your area?

I'm so impressed. And just a tad jealous.

Well, I saw the ENT today. She looked in my nose and she's putting the pedal to the metal and sending me to Infectious Disease. And I thought I was doing better!

Anyway, I'm to continue rinsing with my medicated rinse until Infectious Disease calls me in to set up an at-home IV port for antibiotic self- admin. In the meantime I'm to see an allergist/ immunologist to get control of the inflammation in my nose. Sigh. I'm tired. Too many humps to get over and too many doctors visits!

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

I'm really glad that the white trim thing is in and doesn't seem to be going anywhere. When I first moved here I saw it done on a TV show and I loved it and knew that's what I wanted to do in my house.

I've also kept a TON of stuff out of a landfill. The biggest being those kitchen cabinets, but aside from bad kitchen flooring and all of the garbage (tiny) trim and baseboard with a billion coats of paint on it, I've kept all the doors in the house by repairing and painting them. Those cabinets are top-notch quality too. Not the pressed wood BS that you get when you spend "only" $30,000 to 40,000 for new cabs.

I also had a good deal of help from my friend and his dad. Just the flooring in the kitchen, but a HUGE amount of help basically rebuilding 2 walls in the porch and installing those windows, as well as running a few external outlets, the porch light and building the window jambs.

I've learned so much from my friend's Dad over the last 25 years. I call him my handyman Dad, and my real Dad is my financial/tech Dad.

The joke was that when I grew up we used butter knives for screwdrivers.

My Dad actually got fairly handy in his old age when he retired, but that was well after my time.

Quote:

The painted floor in the porch was an inspired idea.

I can't remember... did I tell you I was doing that? I didn't know what I wanted to do out there since the porch is the most likely place that could still be settling due to the less-than-ideal foundation it was built on. Tile was out of the question. It was either going to be something like I did in the kitchen or carpet, but carpet is probably a bad idea on the floor most likely to get wet from coming in from outside... especially without being tied into the heating system.

I was only going to paint it temporarily since I had a gallon of that color from years back that I never used and I wanted to use it up before it went bad. I was able to get 3 coats out of the gallon and after I put the rug out there I kind of like it as it is. because of the unneveness of the floor I had to put backer rod under the baseboard in some spots and I caulked it. Then I painted all that the same color as the baseboard and cut the floor into it all around.

Quote:

Dood, you have made a showpiece home. Anyone would be happy to buy it.

Well... let's not get too carried away. You're seeing the finished stuff.

I can't even think about finishing that basement until I fix the foundation cracks, get a second sump well and at least one sump pump with a battery backup, and maybe even get a Generac installed in case the power goes out. I probably won't ever take the chance and put a furnace down there, but I might look into installing a heat pump system or two instead.

LOTS of work still to do, but man... this is big. Even without the final solution for the overlook in place, you can't even imagine how good it feels walking into that kitchen right now.

Quote:

I see what you mean by kitchen overlook. I've never seen anything like that before. I wonder what the purpose was? Ventilation? Is it common in your area?

Yeah... I don't know either. I don't believe I've ever seen anything like it myself. Houses in this area are way different from each other, and I'm sure every house on this block looks completely different from each other unlike my brother who moved into his own tri-level home where every house only looks different because they shifted the cookie-cutter design around like tetris pieces.

I'm not even sure what the official name for it is, but overlook just felt right.

Quote:

I'm so impressed. And just a tad jealous.

Well thanks again...

But if I showed you the horrors of the stuff that isn't finished it would put that jealousy right out of your head.

The problem was that my standing appointment card had expired and I didn't have a blue lab form from my doctor. I had to talk to my doctor on the phone and he faxed over a lab form with the info on it and today was the only chance I had to get it in.

They also did have a problem finding a vein. Nurse tried my left arm first but the vein disappeared then she found one in the right. So, all is done now.

Oh, they know what it is, and I know what it is, being a nosy person and reading the culture report that they posted. (I often read the various lab and radiology reports and scare myself half to death most of the time.) It's a mix of pathogenic bacteria usually only found in the nasal cavities of those with cystic fibrosis or immune compromised patients. AFAIK I'm not either, and I have no idea how I could have gotten so massively exposed except that one of the products that I've been using - distilled water, steroid and decongestant spray, saline rinse packets - was contaminated or (in the case of the water) mislabeled (i.e "purified" or "deionized" water was labeled as "distilled"?)
Anyway, this has been going on for 5 months. I tried to deal with it myself since i have lots of allergies and my nose often stuffs up during Santa Ana winds, but it went from bad to worse thru several weather changes. So I finally saw an ENT, who didn't take my complaint seriously so the problem lingered longer than i woild have liked.

Anyway, three rounds of oral antibiotics later she finally got serious about getting this fixed, and is getting in touch with an Infectious Disease specialist.... which was recommended in the lab report to begin with. Color me sleepless and "not a happy camper".

Well, since there are only 35,000 cases of cystic fibrosis in the US, the chances of that are very, very low.

But you might have an auto immune issue. Don't discount that until they have. Don't worry about it until they say there's something to worry about either.

I'm 44 and until I lost 30lbs last winter and finally went to the doctor because I thought (correctly) that I was dying and found out that I've basically got Type 1 Diabetes because my white blood cells got bored and destroyed my pancreas.

I've had quite a few fat people in my family and none of them were diabetic. AFAIK, the only person in my family, including extended family, that had any autoimmune issues was my mom and her MS. Granted, most folk keep serious medical issues to themselves, but my family likes to talk so I think I'd have known about it if there were more people with autoimmune issues. I haven't hidden my diagnosis from anybody. Not only does my family know about it, but all my friends do and even three of my neighbors do.

I have a feeling that Covid and vaccines are going to change a lot of things for a lot of people.

The important thing is that you're seeing the right people now. If you have an autoimmune issue, it's better to find out now and treat it. My life is always going to be different than it was before, but as long as society doesn't crumble and we're not living in Mad Max world I'll be fine. And once you get over the newness of treating it, it's barely an inconvenience. Just like losing most of my teeth at an early age, I thought my life was over when I got my diagnosis. Far from it. Life goes on.

Ahhh... The medical "practice". It's all based on science, but they certainly haven't gotten it down to a science yet. Throw human beings in the mix and it's kind of the luck of the draw with who you're seeing when it comes to anything that isn't a textbook case.

Had I gotten my first Endochrinologist right away instead of that fossil I was stuck with, I might have qualified for the drug trial that can (possibly) stop my autoimmune response that is destroying my pancreas. But we dicked around for 6 months and by the time I got the new guy who actually, actively looked into it for me, it's too late. My problem is now too advanced for me to qualify.

So now not only aren't we going to be able to try and fix that and I'll eventually stop producing any insulin at all and be completely dependent on the system, but nobody is even going to ever bother trying to figure out what happened in the first place.

I know that somebody out there would be interested in knowing how it happened to me besides myself, but this shit is expensive and nobody is going to pay to figure it out, especially if it's too late to do anything about it.

And it turns out that LADA is a lot more common than I thought it was. 2% to 12% of adults with Diabetes in America have LADA. Even at 2%, that's 762,000 adults in America alone with LADA, or nearly 22 times the amount of people in the US with cystic fibrosis. At 12%, it's 4.27 Million Americans.

Good luck Sigs. I hope everything goes well and whatever you've got is easily treatable or even curable once they finally get to the bottom of it. I'm glad they're taking it seriously now.

Sometimes your just not "lucky" like I was and you weren't walking around looking like you had AIDS so they just don't believe you when you tell them how serious it is. We figured out I had Diabetes and ruled out thyroid issues in just 45 minutes. It still took about 2 months from there to figure out that it was Type 1 and caused by LADA though.

Caulked and spackled the door/overlook trim and the new baseboard. I couldn't caulk the entire overlook though because they cheaped out and used a second block of wood to finish the top piece that wasn't as wide as the rest of the board at one end. I had to build that out with wood putty today and I'm not going to mess with that until it's dry tomorrow.

I finally got around to building out the window sills in the living room. I just had to make 4 blocks out of a 3/4" board and shape them with my tabletop belt sander and hit them with brad nails after gluing them down. I thought I'd need to use my countersink bit and drive some screws into the existing windowsill, but the glue and nails will do the trick. I slatered on some wood putty when I was finished and tomorrow I should be able to shape them so you can't even tell it wasn't a solid sill.

I needed to do this so I can trim out the windows. None of the sills on the second floor were long enough for this either, but I went to the trouble of ripping the old ones out years ago and finally getting around to building new sills before trimming everything. I didn't want to go to all that hassle this time, and it only took me about an hour to make the blocks and install them.

Our last day in the 60's today. Cold and rainy tomorrow and we'll be in the 40's by Monday.

SIX, I definitely have an autoimmune issue! It's either Sjogrens or lupus (test positive for both) or maybe rheumatoid arthritis (test positive for that too, sometimes!). Curiously, it (whatever it is) is being treated with hydroxychloroquine.

Also, I had several blood transfusions so maybe my "system" has decided it doesn't like red or white blood cells.

Anyway, I guess I need to be patient. Maybe that's why we're called patients!

Well you should be getting treatment soon. You've been dealing with some bad stuff for a while now, but you should be given a path to manage it going forward and hopefully it ends up being a minor inconvenience instead of several major ones.

Oh, I've known about the autoimmune problem for a while. It kicked off in 2019 after I was on levquin for (yet another) sinus infection. My tendons and ligaments really hurt , but I just ignored it much as possible. But then cancer happened, and I noticed that even tho chemo had all kinds of nasty side effects, it did make the pain go away. I mentioned that to my GP and she thought it was significant enuf to send me to a rheumatologist. A few tests later, I think in late 2022 I was dx'd with either Sjogren's or lupus (could be either). Dr Rx'd HCQ and it's been a lot better since.

SIX: Did you just find this out today???
I'm a little confused.

I must have misread this then...

It's a mix of pathogenic bacteria usually only found in the nasal cavities of those with cystic fibrosis or immune compromised patients. AFAIK I'm not either

I'm still not getting it. Is there a difference between immune compromised and autoimmune disease? Because you just said that, I thought you had a massive breakthrough diagnosis today or something.

SIX:I'm sorry to hear that.

Well, it's not as consequential as LADA.

Isn't it though? My autoimmune disease was just attacking my pancreas as far as I know. Sjogrens and Rheumatoid sound highly annoying, but Lupus could be some really serious shit.

It's been 4 years now and nobody can tell you what you have? You need to know if you have Lupus so you can get treated for it. You could have a heart attack and stroke out.

I'm getting angry at your doctors right now for not taking this seriously.

SIGNY: Anyway, I guess I need to be patient. Maybe that's why we're called patients!

SIX: Well you should be getting treatment soon. You've been dealing with some bad stuff for a while now, but you should be given a path to manage it going forward and hopefully it ends up being a minor inconvenience instead of several major ones.

Indeed!

Force the issue. Make them tell you what you have. There's no excuse for them telling you that you could have Lupus 4 years ago and you still don't know.

I'm worried about you now, Sigs.

You didn't miss the autoimmune issue bc I didn't post about it.

It's at the level of a minor annoyance. I brought it up with my nephrologist and he ran a bunch of tests and ruled out lupus as a cause of my kidney issues.

I'm not much concerned about that, altho I keep an eye on it. Lupus and Sjogren's are treated with the same meds. I did my homework.

My issue is I suspect they're missing something else. I'm always second-guessing my doctors bc of the way they missed our daughter's dx for years. I had to dx her myself. (Not that it did any good, bc there weren"t any treatments for that rare syndrome.) But I learned a long time ago that nobody has a vested interest in solving a health problem like you do.

Don't worry SIX. I tread a fine line between working with my doctors and annoying the hell out of them.

Oh, immune compromised v autoimmunity.

Immune systems are supposed to tackle viruses, bacteria, fungus/yeast, foreign proteins (ie allergens) and abnormal cells like cancer. If you are IMMUNE COMPROMISED it means your immune system, for whatever reason, isn't recognizing and destroying all those foreign "non self" elements, and you get sick and/or cancer more often than someone whose immune system is functioning properly. There are people born with compromised immune systems: "immune deficiency syndrome". If you want to read more about it try searching for "bubble boy".

AUTOIMMUNITY just means that that powerful destructive system that is your immune system gets confused and mistakenly attacks your own cells. Usally bc there is a similarity between the protein that it's attacking and a protein in your own body. For example, some people who react to gluten wind up attacking their own thyroids and wind up with Hashimoto's encepahlitis or Hashimoto's thyroiditis (or both). Back when I was participating in a neurowebforum I actually dxd someone online with Hashimoto's encepahlitis and she wound up getting the treatment she needed.

ALLERGIES are when part of your immune system goes haywire and attacks harmless foreign proteins like pollen and cat dander.

Some unfortunate sods are both immune compromosed AND have autoimmunity (AND allergies)! In othet words, their immune systems aren't functioning very well in disabling bacteria, viruses, cancer cells, etc., but the part that is working iz busy attacking the wrong thing!

Anyway, there are literally dozens of components to the immune system: white blood cells of various kinds, globulins, cytokines and chemokines, interleukins and antibodies, steroids, MAST cells etc. The only thing I know about the immune system is that I don't know much about it.

BRENDA

Out for my walk on a sunny day but I would imagine cold. I really have to dig out some gloves for myself. Computer temp reads 0c. There is a call for rain tomorrow.

Need to pick up some light things when I am out.

Yeah.

But at 0C, won't you be getting snow, not rain? Or is it going to warm up tomorrow?

After fighting over the summer comforter for a few nights last week we got the winter comforter out. Also, I turned on the heat. It's set to 65F (18C) just so it doesn't get beastly cold indoors. I'll be anxious to see the gas bill!

We got our first rainfall of the season a couple of days ago: a respectable 3/4". Showers tomorrow? As you say: We shall see.
