The recent news that Firefly episodes are now available on iTunes is awesome news indeed! This is a real acknowledment from the decision makers that the demand for Firefly/Serenity is holdin' strong. Having Firefly available for download will really open the possibilities for new people to discover THE BEST SHOW EVER.

On another thread, the idea was brought up for fans to organize a big episode buying day, much in the manner of the Serenity Day/Serenity 'Versary plans. A one day buying spree has the merit of shooting the sales numbers up and getting attention, but we may also want to consider perhaps a longer, sustained statement.

I suggested on the other thread that we could organize a progressive Firefly episode purchase. Start on Day One with buying the pilot episode "Serenity", then continue each day and purchase the following episodes in order... in the correct order that Joss intended (not the mixed up original broadcast order).

Firefly has the beauty of being a multi episode series that can sustain a TWO WEEK buying campaign!

Perhaps this will work best if done a few weeks from now. As new titles are added to iTunes, it's important to keep interest fresh for Firefly. A buying campaign can help sustain the numbers and keep attention going. Consistently good sales over the long haul will help demonstrate to a studio that there's still a strong audience for the Firefly/Serenity 'verse.

P.S.
For anyone who would like to start buying episodes now, please do so! They are very reasonably priced and each one purchased is a vote of support for Firefly... and a voice for continuing our shiny 'verse.

You can purchase episodes separately ($1.99 each), or buy an entire TV season at a discounted price.

iTunes is PC and Mac compatible, and you can download the program for free from the Apple website.

THAT'S AWESOME! Definitely a wonderful thing to do! Big splashy buying sprees make great statements, but it's important to keep the sales strong and steady on "non event" days. If a buying campaign is conducted, it will take a bit of time and organizing to do anyway... so I would certainly not suggest that folks hold off buying episodes.

Getting the complete Firefly series right now is a very important show of support, and demonstrates that 20th Century Fox and Apple have made a very savvy move.

Remember that you can also gift a season or episode. Sounds like a good way to convert someone.

Oh, 11th Hour, this is a wonderful idea indeed!

I agree that a sustained planned campaign will be much better.

Imagine if we can get all Browncoats everywhere to download them just like you suggested....it'll really impact their numbers. Also I liked the idea of downloading them in their correct order... maybe they'll get the hint and put
them in their correct order.

I'm anxious to see exactly what you have in mind re: date to start, how many downloads to shoot for etc.

Finally.... we can do something concrete that we can see how the numbers play out.

And think of all the new folks who will take a chance on the 'verse now that they can download it!

The announcement has been posted on several message boards. I tried to do a search myself to post a link, but presently I'm operating at a bit of a disadvantage... My computer went non-operational yesterday and I'm presently using my old back-up computer for Internet access. Unfortunately, all the software is fairly old and I literally could not do a search on the Apple site... my older browser couldn't deal with it for some reason.

My computer dilemma should be resolved in the next few days, but in the meantime a thread on WHEDONesque has posted direct links to Firefly and Buffy on iTunes. Just read the first post:

http://whedonesque.com/comments/10305

Hope this works for everyone, I can't check it with this ancient browser... grrr argh...

Excellent idea!

Let's all start thinking in terms of sending episodes as gifts and for other occasions... just keep spreading the seeds of Firefly and wonderful things will grow...

Ahh, that worked. Thanks 11th.

I just downloaded the whole ruttin' season! :) Shiny!

Weird that you need to access it via the direct link; it's not listed on the "regular" iTUnes tv listings.....

When I first heard this news this morning I searched the Apple site and my itunes and couldn't find it in either place, but if you have itunes the Whedonesque link works great:

I'm sure both the Apple site and the itunes interface will be updated once they start selling - maybe even front page stuff.
Thx 11th, great idea

From iTunes Music Store, you click on TV Shows at the left. Scroll down about halfway under Sci-Fi and its right there. Its also listed under Fox shows (sad little kings on their sad little hill

One thing I noticed, after submitting my review, they didn't show up anymore. I wonder if we overloaded their system...shiny if we did, then they'll HAVEE to notice us.

Damn and blast it all to hell in a handbasket. Not to rain on the parade here, but.

I bought the pilot off of iTunes because I wanted to compare the quality with the episodes I had ripped off of my DVDs to my iPod (using HandBrake, Mac shareware), and the bloody episodes on iTunes aren't letterboxed (i.e. widescreen), they're full screen, which means aproximately 1/4-1/3 of the image is missing.

I know on a small iPod screen, they probably thought bigger was better, but huh. I know it's a niggly point, but I like to see it the way it was shot.

Quality-wise, though, it's better (not as much artifacting from the compression algorithms) but darn disappointing that people who purchase won't get the whole picture. Literally.

I'm going to check again tomorrow to see if there was an option to download a widescreen version, but I don't remember it being an option.

Also, the episode order is out of whack. They have Objects in Space listed as airing 4th from the end, with Heart of Gold being the final episode. Going to email them tomorrow to see if they can correct that.

But, all in all, it's a great (legal) way for people to preview the episodes, and they'll like to so much, they'll go right out and buy the whole gorram set on DVD.

OK, I'm finished looking at this gift horse and only seeing it's teeth.

I don't have an IPod, but I for sure am downloading ITunes tomorrow and downloading these pretties.

Hera, maybe if enough of us download them individually in the right order and email as well they'll see the error of their ways and fix that little problem.

11th Hour.. you say the word.. set up times, set up dates and I'll bet you will have every Browncoat on board to do this!

Not only will we download them now.. but we'll keep downloading them.

What a great time for this to become available with the rise of new folks in our ranks and the interest in Firefly/Serenity growing! Perfect timing!

Well, I guess the real issue would depend on whether they are showing the DVD version or the aired version of OiS, since they altered that little conversation between Inara and Mal.

AGATSU

As far as I know, it's the full screen version of the original airings in Fox's crazy-ass order.
Still, it might be enough to convince people to watch an episode or two, and when they're on the go (i-pod), they're more inclined to get bored and give it a try.
And 2 bucks, that's nothing.
I think it's a shiny opportunity and would suggest to set the date for purchasing one episode a day right inbetween Serenity Day and the 'Versary (maybe a bit towards the latter), so people get over the "thirst distance", as it's called in Germany, the length of time in which things are going slow and motivation is probably lowest. Early to mid-August might be good.
Is there a way to buy episodes for OTHER people as a gift? You know, I pay, and then they can download it?
In that case the early August date is even better, since it will leave people who like the pilot time to watch the rest of the series before buying the BDM on September 30th.
I also second the notion of purchasing the episodes in the DVD order.
What's the quality of the videos, btw? I de-installed i-tunes because software that just installs itself pisses me off, and I use WinAmp most of the time, anyways. I also thought i-tune was mostly for downloading stuff to your i-pod, and I don't have one. My portable mp3 player plays the Firefly and Serenity soundtracks, and as long as it's doing that, it's enough for me.

Agatsu, according to a poster above us, I think you can buy it as a gift, which I find to be just awesome!

Your idea about when to buy is a good one.. there will be some drawn out time.... unless we plan some really shiny things and we're all so busy we can't even breathe .... but that's good right! Either way we get to get the word out, and that is gonna make the entire summer fun!

It's a great lead up to buying and viewing Serenity on Serenity 'Versary.
