I just found out Jewel Staite is going to be at the Comic Con in Madison this year!

Some friends invited me to go with them, and I've never been to a convention before, so I'm pretty jazzed. The two friends leading the charge are both really into cosplay, and I think we're going to do a Firefly day (I'll be Wash).

Anybody else going?

I assume Jewel gets at least half of whatever is paid for photos and autographs. Here is the price at Wizard World Madison:

Jewel Staite Photo Op – $45.00
http://wizardworld.com/madisonphotoops.html
Jewel Staite Autograph – $40.00
http://wizardworld.com/madisonautographs.html

For that money I'd sign autographs and smile while being photographed.

two fans who probably did not pay for a photo with Jewel. So why was Jewel smiling despite doing it for free?

Recreating this kind of photo with Jewel is worth paying $45 at Wizard World Madison.

I didn't see this until just now! Sorry!

Yeah, the Wash outfit came together fine. It wasn't amazingly screen accurate or anything, but a Hawaiian shirt over a flight suit was pretty recognizable to anyone who loves Firefly. I went with three friends who dressed as Simon, River, and Kaylee on Friday. They all had extremely labor-intensive Batman costumes that they love that they wanted to wear on Saturday (Batman, Harley Quinn, & Poison Ivy), but I didn't have any intentions of cosplaying anything other than Firefly so I just went as Wash again in the morning. At lunch, via a joke turned serious, I changed into my friend's Kaylee costume to attend the Jewel Staite panel. Which turned out to be awesome. Jewel specifically commented during the panel that she loves seeing guys as Kaylee.
It was also awesome to hear about her friendship with Sean Maher. I love that Kaylee and Simon are still close friends. The two girls had brought costumes to be "dolls" (from Joss Whedon's Dollhouse) on Sunday, thinking it would be a nice, easy, low-commitment costume for the last day, but they decided to go as Firefly characters instead because it was more fun (and still comfortable). I switched with the Kaylee friend again, so she went as Wash. There was a LOT of support for the gender-bend.

I also caught half of the Nicholas Brendon panel (I had to leave early to catch Jewel Staite's. Unfortunate timing). A woman used her "question" to tell him that his openness about his depression had really helped her cope with her depression/mental illness. His response was really lovely, I thought, about how her being open about her mental illness in that moment in turn makes it easier for him to cope with HIS depression. That the community can support each other because they're all going through it together. It was a really interesting thing to hear, and it totally makes sense to me. Sometimes what helps us the most isn't being inspired by a role model who is doing everything right; it's seeing that someone we respect is having the same struggle. And from Nicholas's point of view, it totally makes sense to me that knowing that he can help his fans deal with depression makes it easier for him to be open about it and deal with it himself.

There was also an "Expanding 'Verse" panel about Firefly comic books, fan films, cosplay sources, games, etc. It was really fun and the hosts were great. Probably not a ton of new content for most of the folks on this forum, but I picked up a couple tips. And it was a reminder to my friends that they need to come over and play Firefly: The Board Game with me soon.

And lastly, there was an amazing panel on diversity in comic books right before the con ended on Sunday. For a potentially serious topic, it was surprisingly hilarious. If you ever get the chance to attend one, I would highly recommend it. Perhaps because of the unfortunate timeslot it was very poorly attended. Maybe 30-ish people? Two comic book writers and one cosplayer, all of color, hosted by Tony Kim, the same guy who hosted for Jewel Staite and David Tennant. He said this is his favorite panel to host, and I can totally see why.

Should we expect to see a pile of newcomers here from Madison, or south-central WI? Based on you spreading the word to fellow Browncoats?

Did you end up making it?

Whenever people didn't recognize my costume and asked about it, I told them it was from Firefly. The response was almost universally an, "Oh! I've been meaning to watch that!"
