ALMANAC

I'm currently involved in setting up a Firefly/Serenity-themed consuite at Keycon here in Winnipeg, and I thought I would enlist the help of this board's many talented Browncoats...

(Some of you may be aware that I also organised the Raise-a-Reader Charity Auction at Keycon last year, featuring several items from Firefly castmembers.)

The con is Victoria Day weekend (i.e. May 18-20 this year), so there is still some time to prepare, but it seemed best to get some assistance before things go down to the wire. I also came across a rather disappointing Serenity suite at Valleycon in Fargo this past October, so I'd like to avoid the sort of underwhelming minimalism I saw there.

If any of you have any advice to offer on how to successfully pull off this sort of suite at a con, feel free to join the Browncoat Saloon Community on LiveJournal:

http://community.livejournal.com/browncoatsaloon/

Similarly, you can also join the Browncoat Saloon on MySpace:

http://www.myspace.com/browncoatsaloon

The Browncoat in charge of this shindig has posted on some Whedon-related boards as X.G., so you could also send her a message that way, though it may take longer for her to see it...

In particular, I know she is looking for help in replicating one of Inara's costumes from Serenity, so it would be great if someone could point her in the right direction(s).

Thanks in advance...I appreciate any and all help you have to offer, and I know we can all make sure this goes off well.

I'm just giving this a quick bump, for those who might not have seen it the first time...

I'd also like to ask for some more specific help:

We need a "clean" graphic version (i.e. black kanji on a white background) of one or both Chinese translations out there for the word "Browncoat" to give to the person designing our logo, as opposed to the Chinese text display on Ying's site (for example).

If anyone could help me out with that (ASAP, if you could), please feel free to email me through the site linked below...

Thank you very much in advance.

This is another update...now with pictures!

The Browncoat Saloon is opening in Winnipeg next week!

We're well along our way to finishing up everything...and don't worry, we took care of the kanji issue mentioned in another thread of mine.

One of the main items we got out of the way was building all of the set pieces for the suite, which involved taking a weekend out of town for some serious carpentry. If you're interested, you can check out our work in progress on this LiveJournal post:

http://community.livejournal.com/browncoatsaloon/12922.html

Here's a preview, as I get my orbital sander on:

Whether or not you have a LiveJournal, I'd take it as a personal kindness if you could post a comment on that community entry...so at least I know that people are reading this.

Any help in getting the word out (or in the suite itself, if you're in Winnipeg for Keycon) would also be most appreciated...

I'm sorry we missed you...

This is the first iteration of the Browncoat Saloon, but judging by all the signs, it definitely won't be the last.

Good call...

Both the LiveJournal Community and the MySpace page will be updated whenever we decide to put on the Browncoat Saloon again. (This could be in Winnipeg, elsewhere in Manitoba, or even further afield...who knows what the future holds?)

As such, it's a good idea to keep an eye on either/both for developments...

This is yet another bump...

After all, with the Big Damn Opening coming up so soon, I need to make sure people stay aware of the Saloon.

I hope my fellow Browncoats will help me out in that regard...

The Browncoat Saloon was apparently a rousing success!

A lot of people were really happy to see a Firefly-themed suite in Winnipeg for the first time, and they seemed to dig the effort all of us put into it.

Today has been rather hectic (heck, I'm still in my Wash outfit ), but as soon as I have more time to do so, I'll post a bunch of pics of the Saloon in this thread along with some of my thoughts. Some con reports are already starting to show up online...

Before anyone gets the wrong idea, though, this was not all my doing. I've been posting about it because I'm on the boards already, and I've been helping out, but it wasn't even my idea to begin with.

That credit goes to Jamie Newransky. The genesis and driving force of the Browncoat Saloon came entirely from her, and although she's been on some Whedon-related communities online, she doesn't read these boards on a regular basis. As such, I'd really appreciate it if the Browncoat community could show her some direct love and support for making this happen, because she deserves it more than anyone. Her email address is: jamie.kathleen@gmail.com

Besides her and myself, the other above-the-line credits, as it were, belong to (in alphabetical order) Eve Dutton, Hilary Friesen, Cynara Geissler, Derek Patterson, and James Repa. Most of them are joined up with our LiveJournal and MySpace presences (which I've already linked above), if you're interested.

I promise there'll be a lot more to talk about, plus plenty of visuals, soon...

Checking back in with various Firefly-related things this weekend has revealed to me that, even though the Browncoat Saloon was hosted here in Winnipeg quite a while ago, the schwag we put together for it is still quite popular everywhere:

Particularly popular is the Mudder's Milk Mug we made available:

I'm glad our work continues to live on, much like the franchise itself...and I think I need to get another one of those mugs. :)
