The independently owned and operated Little Art Theatre in Yellow Springs, OH will host two free screenings of the 2005 adventure film SERENITY to benefit the international human rights organization Equality Now.

Screenings will be held Saturday, June 21, 2008 at 4 p.m. and Monday, June 23 at 7:30 p.m. (Doors open 30 minutes before show time.) Although there is no admission charge to the event, donations to Equality Now are strongly encouraged. Donations will be collected at the event, and can also be made online at LittleArt.com beginning Friday, May 9.

Equality Now works to end violence and discrimination against women and girls around the world through the mobilization of public pressure. Issues of concern to Equality Now include rape, domestic violence, reproductive rights, trafficking, female genital mutilation, political participation and gender discrimination.

Beginning in 2006, fans of SERENITY and its writer-director, Joss Whedon, began organizing screenings of the film around the world to raise money and awareness to benefit Equality Now. (Whedon was an Equality Now "Men on the Front Lines" honoree in 2005.) 2008 marks the first time an Ohio theater outside of Cleveland has participated in this worldwide effort.

"The Little Art is extremely proud to host these free screenings, and to offer Yellow Springs, Dayton and our neighboring communities this important opportunity to come together in support of equality and opportunity for women around the world," said Little Art owner Jenny Cowperthwaite.

Shown at the Little Art from a pristine, high-definition digital source, SERENITY stars Nathan Fillion as Captain Malcolm Reynolds, a hardened veteran of a galactic civil war, who now ekes out a living pulling off small crimes and transport-for-hire aboard his ship, Serenity. He leads a small, eclectic crew who are the closest thing he has left to family — squabbling, insubordinate and undyingly loyal. When Mal takes on two new passengers — a young doctor and his unstable, telepathic sister — he gets much more than he bargained for: The pair are fugitives from the coalition dominating the universe, who will stop at nothing to reclaim the girl and her unique abilities. The crew that was once used to skimming the outskirts of the galaxy unnoticed find themselves caught between the unstoppable military force of the Universal Alliance and the fury of the Reavers, savages who roam the very edge of space. (Universal Pictures)

From the Equality Now website (equalitynow.org): "Equality Now is extremely grateful for the support of [SERENITY fans] and inspired by the tremendous energy and commitment they have put into their efforts to support our work to end human rights abuses against women and girls around the world."

SERENITY runs 119 minutes and has been rated PG-13 by the Motion Picture Assocation of America "for sequences of intense violence and action, and some sexual references."

I live in Yellow springs and I am thinking about organizing a shindig (probably on the 21st) because Browncoats will be coming from all over this end of the state anyway and the opportunity seemed too good to miss. I was thinking it would start before the movie, with people filtering in as they show up, head over to the movie, and come back afterwards, though this is just my first idea on how to do it. Is anyone interested? Any thoughts?

That sounds like a wonderful idea!

How many Browncoats are you expecting?

Honestly, I am not sure at this point. Part of the reason I posted something here before anything concrete was planned was to gauge interest levels. I know some people in and around Y.S. who will be coming, but I have very little idea how many people will be coming from elsewhere. The more, the better, obviously, though the Little Art isn't exactly a huge theater.

Let me emphasize again that this is still in a very early planning stage. I don't know for sure where or when it will happen, how many people will be involved, or exactly what will be going on. I just thought that because people from all over would probably be heading my way anyway, I might as well do something. I don't even know for sure if this is happening for sure yet; that depends in large part on interest levels.

If anyone here has any interest in helping make this happen or can confirm that they would be interested in attending it, please let me know. I have never organized something of this sort on this scale before, so any help would be appreciated. Any ideas or suggestions would also be appreciated.

I heard someone posted a sign about a pre-screening Shindig at the Little Art today!

Was that you BRMJ?

Yeah, though it is actually a post-screening shindig so that people who were going to the screening and say the sign could potentially come.

I was planning to do that today, actually. I've been a little sleep deprived recently and basically collapsed after posting something to the Ohio Browncoats group yesterday. To save time, I will just post a slightly edited copy of what I sent them.

I am also going to be hosting a shindig after the movie on the 21st. Sorry for the short notice; I have only known all the details of what is likely to happen since 3:00 or so yesterday. There is a heated out-door pool available, as well as free Wifi and a large LCD TV, complete with boxed set and Big Damn Movie. I will probably also try to force feed you Ubuntu Linux CDs, because I am just that kind of geek. I also have pretty much all the Firefilk on the net, to the best of my knowledge. Costumes are welcomed. Hot dogs or something will be provided, but bringing food or a non-alcoholic beverage to share is strongly encouraged. It would be helpful if you RSVP so that I know how about much to buy, but that isn't required. The shindig will start as soon as the movie is over and end at 10 pm at the latest. It will be at 1117 Livermore Street, Yellow Springs Ohio. In case you need to contact me, my phone number is 937-767-2072 and my email address is bmillerjacobson /\`|` gmail [)()`|` com. Hope to see you there!

Aijoskobi & BRMJ -
Good to meet you both! Always a pleasure to meet fellow Browncoats & put faces to names.

Aijoskobi - Thank you for putting the whole thing together. Looked like a decent sized crowd turned out, the theater was at about 1/2 capacity.

The door prizes were excellent! I hope you get a taker on each of the items for sale at the next showing.

Saturday's screening was a success! We had about 75 people show up and there were a ton of generous donations made to Equality Now (we'll have a final donation tally after Monday's screening).

Thanks again to BRMJ for hosting the post-screening Shindig and thanks to everyone who made it out.

See ya Monday at 7:30!
