Hello, is anyone else going to this? Is this an official Firefly event? It seems kind of expensive for a convention if there aren't going to be any celebrities. I mean I know that there's other stuff happening, but you can go to some major conventions and see Firefly fans and other Whedonverse stuff for a lot less money.
I'd really want to go to this if I know it'll be worth it. Does anyone have any more information about this?

Bucky

Hi Bucky

I notice by your profile that you only registered for your FFF.net account a few hours before you posted your message, so I'm wondering if you're relatively new to FF/Serenity fandom. If so, great, welcome! If not, then I'm actually somewhat surprised that you're not that familiar with the Browncoat Ball, as this is the 4th year for the event.

The Browncoat Ball (BCB) is an international, fan-based, fan-run event that has taken place in previous years in Chicago, San Francisco, and most recently, Philadelphia. Austin has the honor to host the 2008 festivities. The event is based off the episode "Shindig," but we host other activities and programs based around the entire FF/Serenity 'verse. The entire point of the event is precisely the comments you made in your post, that we DON'T have a lot of official/celebrity participation in order to keep the fan-based flavor of the event.

If you have any questions about specifics regarding costs and events, please email me. I hope you have a change of heart and we see you in Austin this October.

Also Austin is a pretty cool city. If you've never visited before you might be interested in coming just to check it out. There's a lot of live music and culture to check out. People here are way more open minded than other places I've visited in Texas.

Also the Austin browncoats are very nice, welcoming people. I'll likely be at the ball if I ever get not lazy and sign up already.

Zeek, do we need to throw a "sign up for the ball" shindig? Pizza, drinks, Firefly playing in the background - and laptops lining the tables, ready for registration.

:)

About the Ball, I couldn't say it better myself. These events are fan run, fan done. And Austin in no Alliance town, my friend. :)

Hope to see you here!

In addition to the activities, one thing that makes this different from many conventions is the fact that the major parties are included in the cost as well as some meals.

For instance, on Friday, there is a cocktail hour; on Saturday they offer a continental breakfast, cocktail hour, banquet and ball. On Sunday, there is also a brunch.

These are on the schedule page : http://www.browncoatball.com/2008/schedule/

Bowlwoman, I'm not really new to Firefly fandom, but I haven't been involved with the organized groups. I'm mostly a gamer and go to the bigger conventions like GenCon and DragonCon. I've recently started GMing Firefly and think it's probably the best western-style RPG out there (though I wish there was more supplemental material). I have a good friend in Austin who is also a gamer (the same person who I went to Butt-Numb-A-Thon with), so I could stay in Austin relatively cheaply. This is one of the reasons I probably couldn't justify the cost of the Ball. I try to eat as cheap as possible at conventions to save money, and I don't really drink a lot of alcohol, so the cocktail hours would be wasted on me. Some of those tracks look really fun, and make the convention very unique compared to the bigger cons, so I'm sure this would be a great deal for a lot of people, but I'm probably gonna have to sit this one out.

Mainly cause of the lack of time travel technology? It was last weekend.

I'm from Austin and had to miss it to though. I feel your pain. You should come to some of the other austin browncoat stuff though. Every first sunday we watch an episode. There's talk of going to a haunted house or on an austin ghost tour. I think there's karaoke planned just about every month (if you're into that...I'm not )

Anyway check out the website at austinbrowncoats.com

As far as I know, Charlotte is planning to submit another bid next year.
We're trying to come up with a flashy way to get our bid noticed. So if you have any ideas, we'd love to hear them.
Or, if you have some technical know-how, we could definitely put it to good use.
Who knows, your contribution might be the key ingredient to help us win.
