Mudder's Milk -- anyone want to suggest a recipe?

Okay, I'm having a Big Damn Halloween Shindig, and I am toying with the idea of making some kind of punch. Seems like one of those party things to do.

Of course, the first Firefly beverage that comes to mind is Mudder's Milk. But I'm stymied. What do you think would make a good (non-alcoholic) recipe? I was thinking something chocolate, maybe, but I dunno what. Anyone have a recipe for a chocolate punch?

Well you could just call a black cow by another name...
that is root beer w/chocolate ice cream is tasty

a lot of people make fruit punch w/sherbet floating in it, but most people don't serve a coke or root beer float as a punch, but there is no reason why you can't....

You're talking NON-Alcoholic. . .

You want to take your basic Protien/Weight-Gain/Meal Replacement type shake that you can buy from any fitness store and add something like "Red Bull" or "Amp" or another high-energy drink.

For anyone interested in an alcoholic version, add 15% Everclear, which is flavorless, colorless and odorless.

Tamade, Static, that sounds deadly! With or without the Everclear!

True story: I was never in a frat, but my buddy was. He invited me to a frat party, where, of course, the main attraction was getting as drunk as possible, as fast a possible. This included drinking honest-to-God moonshine. Came in a Mason jar and everything. (This was at the University of Kentucky -- he went there, not me.)

So they get the jar out, but uh-oh, the lid is rusty. No one is sure if the hooch is still good. So to test it, they pour a shot and LIGHT IT ON FIRE. If it burns blue, it's safe; yellow, it can make you go blind (or vice versa, I can't recall).

Naturally, I declined to partake, even though it burned the safe color. Any liquor that must be set afire to determine its potability is not for me. But everyone else drank it. My hand to God.

Yep I am an avid user of 'clear for the few times a year parties! Usually mixed with some variant of gatoraide to keep pace with the fluid loss caused by alcohol. Also it has potassium, sodium and other things alcohol stripps away. And that equals - no hangover, if yer prone to them.

Isn't Mudders milk a white/gray? I truly don't remember.

If so...

Non: White chocolate pudding - thinned with something to repoduce the 'hoppy' taste of beer, something to cut the sweetness, but have a good flavor.

Alcoholic: white chocolate pudding again, everclear {to indvidual taste} for kick and perhaps pear cider and Ice Lime gatoraide.

Dunno, not tried it yet - the pudding may curdle, but a blender on frappe with some ice may fix that.

I remember a couple months ago at our city's annual heritage festival, I tried this one Nicaraguan drink "cacao". It is made of roasted cocoa, milk, sugar, and is served cold. I haven't found an actual recipe, but that's the first thing in mind when I think of mudder's milk. Excerpted from 'Alcohol Fermentation':
Heat a small amount of the spirit in a pan until it is well warmed. Turn off the heat, then put a flame to the warmed alcohol. If it is `clean' spirit with few impurities, it should burn with a steady blue flame. If the flame is flecked with yellow or orange, or if the flame sputters while burning, do not drink it - use it as an embrocation (rubbing, massage} instead.

Colors
For those interested in flame colors:{Some but not limited to...} Not necessarily drinkable, possibly DEADLY!

Carmine - Lithium Chloride

Red - Strontium Chloride

Orange - Calcium Chloride (a bleaching powder)

Yellow - Sodium Chloride (table salt)or Sodium Carbonate

Yellowish - Green Borax

Green - Copper Sulfate

Blue - Copper Chloride {already in water}

Violet - 3 parts Potassium Sulfate
1 part Potassium Nitrate (saltpeter)

Purple - Potassium Chloride

White Magnesium Sulfate - (Epsom salts)

Very true. My mistake.

Perhaps a more accurate statement would be that it has a flavor and odor that is more easily masked by whatever it's mixed with. . .which is why it's such a universal mixer?

I honestly don't have a taste for many types of alcohol. . .I'm a close to exclusive in my tastes to Jameson and Bushmills whiskeys. I simply assumed Everclear would be the best choice since it's used in so many other combinations.

I suppose as far as alcoholic mixers would go for Mudder's milk, you can add what you like. With MY recipe, I was not going so much for yummy flavor as I was 'script accuracy'. . .

I don't know for virgin things, but for them as want to make something accurate to the show - SlimFast and Baileys, with vodka or spiced rum for extra kick. Whatever you use, you'll want it to be thick, almost gloppy. Ya know, a little unflavored gelatin (Knox) goes a long way.

I may also have cracked the mysteries of Ice Planet, if anyone is keen.

Funny you should mention that, my husband died drinking that stuff - twice. (This isn't a temperance lecture, I swear.) He drank two bottles, straight, in one sitting, while he was USAF. Thankfully, he passed out on the picnic table where he and his friend liked to congregate. They happened upon him, dragged him to the hospital, and ran like hell. While the doctors were working on him, he arrested twice and each time came back on his own. True story. I also had a friend who used to carry a camel-back of Everclear and orange juice on his back all day, and I mean starting at 8am.

Yeah, that doesn't sound very good. Beer shouldn't be crunchy. Simon did say "ancestral form of beer" and the final forms of things are often widely different from how they started, so maybe it wasn't really very beer-like at all.

Does Simon's description of "liquid bread" set off anyone's mental hamster wheels? I didn't do anthing for mine, not yet at least.

What if Mudder's Milk were more like a soup? Maybe like a good potato soup, but you add a good deal more than the shot of vodka called for in some recipes.

I have tried beer made from an ancient egyptian recipe. Quite yummy if you like chewy beers (probably closest a brown ale). sweet (since no hops to bitter it down). Beer hasn't changed much over the millennia (other than the hops, that swill 'light beer', and the stuff with the rooster added).

Why are people thinking it has to be thick? I don't remember anything from the show. The bottles had a pretty narrow mouth, not something you could get potato soup through.

I never got the impression that it was thick, but it was milky - opaque rather than translucent or clear. So whatever you do, would almost have to start with a cream or milk base.

Heck you want nutrients, throw in some protein powder and blend it with ice. And then flavor to taste.

My unfortunate condition of a seriously lacking sense of taste and smell rather prevents me from suggesting any things that would taste good together in order to enjoy the drinking experience.

GOJIRO


For those interested, this is the recipe I wound up using, since it just sounded good. And it was.

1.5 quarts water
.5 cup instant chocolate drink (i.e. hot cocoa mix)
.5 cup sugar
.25 cup instant coffee granules
.5 gallon vanilla ice cream
.5 gallon chocolate ice cream
1 cup whipped cream, whipped (I forgot this. D'OH!)

20 servings, 5 quarts, 4 hours prep time, 5 minutes mix time

1. In a large sauce pan, bring the water to a boil then remove from heat.
2. Add the cocoa mix, sugar, and instant coffee.
3. Stir until dissolved. Cover, let cool, and refrigerate for 4 hours or overnight.
4. About 30 minutes before serving, pour into a punch bowl. Add the ice cream by scoopfuls; stir until partially melted. Garnish with dollops of whipped cream. (Again, forgot.)

The taste was most often compared to a mocha chocolate shake, which was about the consistency, too. Gives you all the sugar, caffeine, and calories you need to make it through the night.

For folk wishing to spike it, a little rum would probably taste real nice in the mix.

I think most who tried it liked it! It was gone by the end of the night, least ways.

Towards the beer slant, a west indian aquaintance of mine sweared the following was a breakfast drink:

12 oz Guiness Stout
1 shot brandy
1 egg (raw)
1/2 cup heavy cream

Never tried it.

I just want everyone to notice the word "breakfast" in there. Man after my own heart. I once accused a friend of drinking before noon. He argued that it was a continuation of the night before. I countered that his *whole* life was a "continuation of the night before".

When I was in Ireland (admittedly it was for St Patrick's Day, so that may have been the excuse) I was roped into drinking whiskey before 9am. We combined it with the standard coffee and cream - plus thick stew (separate bowl, thanks!) and then afterwards a guinness or two...... suffice to say, I didn't quite make it through to the late evening.

As for mudders milk - have always thought of it as a milk and mixer kind of deal - there are plenty of options in the above for me to now go try on friends!! :)

Here's a drink invented for a "Medieval Addams Family" party some years ago (We were at the Pennsic War, and decided to hold a party where everyone came as their fave member of the Addams Family.)

Mudslide mix
Chocolate ice cream
Vodka

Mix to taste and until thick & gloppy (must be gloppy).

We called it Mud. It was very popular.

You could, I suppose, make it with Vanilla ice cream, instead, (although I like the protein shake idea to conform to the nutritional value mentioned in the ep.)
The ideas mentioned for a non-alcoholic version sound ok to me, especially the protein drink ones and egg nog one, or maybe something with vanilla ice cream partially melted and sprite or other clear soda?
Something to think about for Thanksgiving or X-mas.
