So this is just a fun little question that popped into my head so I thought i'd make a silly thread asking ya'll what you think. So what liquor do you think the crew of Serenity would drink. Here's my list.

1. Mal: Whiskey or Fireball Whiskey

2. Inara: Something fruity like a Daiquiri or a Cosmopolitan

3. Jayne: Saki straight up

4. Kaylee Frye: Sex On The Beach or a Strawberry Daiquiri

5. Shepard Book: Wine

6. Wash: Margarita or a Pina Colada

7. Zoe Washburne: something tough and rough like Jägermeister or, Everclear (basically the real life equivalent to the Blue Sun alcohol seen in the show) or Vodka

8. Simon Tam: Macallan Single Malt Scotch on the rocks or Champagne

9. River Tam: Absinthe

WHOZIT

Spending most of their time in the outer rim, likely moonshine. BUT, in "Serenity" Jayne was drinking something that looked expensive before he got his ass kicked by River. Book, Inara, River and Kaylee don't look like drinkers.

Fun, all good - a few other picks:

1. Mal: Never drinks on board, but when they get where they're going it's bourbon, beer, whiskey - strong stuff, neat. War teaches one to get to where you are going without a lot of fuss.

2. Inara: I don't see her drinking, maybe rarely. Companions need to stay in control, though I bet she would be fun tipsy.

3. Jayne: Some kind of tasteless corporate Blue Sun beer and lots of it. He has hidden stashes all over the ship.

4. Kaylee Frye: Sex On The Beach or a Strawberry Daiquiri - something with umbrellas, Yes!

5. Shepard Book: Wine/port/brandy. Book likes to ruminate and slow sippin' aperitifs and digestifs are perfect for that.

6. Wash: Michelada, bloody marys, New England Ice Teas of the future, almost any kind of colorful concocted alcohol mess - he just can't resist - but one stiff drink and he's out or embarrassingly horny. I see him more as the ship's brewer than it's drinker.

7. Zoe Washburne: bourbon, neat, 'nuff said.

8. Simon Tam: Simon got drunk once and climbed a statue, naked, and is a might aferd of drinking again, even though he does. I see him experimenting with all kinds of drink cautiously, and looking down on them all.

9. River Tam: I would be scared if River was drinking anything, especially Absinthe!

LOL! Great Choices!!! The reason I made Inara's drink like that was because of what I saw her drinking in the episode Shindig (when they get into the Barfight). In the bar she's drinking this really tiny, cute, pink little drink that just reminded me of a cosmo lol.

Now you can luxuriate in a nice jail cell, but if your hand touches metal I swear by my pretty floral bonnet I will end you.

MUDD

I feel like this thread can't last too long before Mudder's Milk gets brought up. I've seen a bunch of fan recipes out there, and they all look delicious (which sadly probably means they're not accurate). Jayne was the only one who seemed to be enjoying it, yeah?

In Shindig Inara says. "I'm looking for the boy with the shimmerwine," at the party. I presume that's some sort of wine.

Edit: Mal and Inara are drinking some very "fresh" wine at the end of Shindig too. Seemed like Inara's first time drinking it but not Mal's.

One of the things that I love about Firefly is the symbolism Joss would use to speak to how the crew felt about each other - for instance: In the pilot, Jayne kneeling by the observation window to the infirmary while Simon operated on Kaylee.

One of my favorites in Serenity is during Mal's Aim to Misbehave speech, Jayne takes a sip from a bottle and passes it over to Simon. I imagined it's
one of Jayne's moonshine concoctions (or probably liberated scotch) and he shares it with someone that he begins to respect (how he looks after his sister). Jayne is not much for words, but he shares things with those he respects - he weight trains with Book, he probably talks guns with Zoe - and now he shares his booze with Simon. It shows that he's accepted him as part of the crew. It's a simple gesture, but Jayne is uncomplicated and
straightforward. That's how he bonds.

Joss presents these moments in a subtle manner, small gestures that speaks volumes. That's my drinking/alcohol connection with the crew.

What's fun about your list is it made me think about each of these characters in different, real, every day ways.
And speaking of Inara... one of the unexpected things that hit me while thinking about what she would drink, is that one of the slightly negative sides to her personality is her need to be in control and how much of her life is artificial. Don't get me wrong, I love Inara's character and I hadn't even considered that side to her, but it's definitely there. Maybe she was just sipping a Shirley Temple (no alcohol), pretending to be part of the group? That one line from Jaynestown, "your clocks are probably rigged to go faster to cheat us out of our money..." (to that effect) always stuck with me as, "probably not true, but that's not an unfair thing to wonder." She spends a lot of her time pretending.
Thanks again!

The Reason I use Sake for Jayne is because of the huge Chinese influence in the show. Since Firefly is a space western naturally you'd have whiskey (it's all they ever drink in the old spaghetti westerns like "A Fistful Of Dollars") and because the Alliance is the American government and the Chinese government fusing together after the destruction of Earth That Was I feel Sake and Whiskey would be the two main drinks of the world. With the bottle that Jayne hands to Simon I believe it's just the Blue Sun Grain Alcohol that is seen in the bar on Beaumonde (i'll have to rewatch the movie). I just feel that in this world Sake and Whiskey would be your two main choices because of the Government. There would be other drinks but it would be hard to come by. If you remember the episode Shindig, Badger was thoroughly excited that River was "british" (of course she isn't but he didn't know that) because there is no England anymore. So I feel finding things like "irish cream" or other drinks that are native to certain countries here on Earth would be very very very hard to come by and might be extremely expensive if you do.

Now you can luxuriate in a nice jail cell, but if your hand touches metal I swear by my pretty floral bonnet I will end you.
