What are Inara's, Simon's and Kaylee's feelings/opinions about guns? What are their skills with guns? Do they have preferences for a personal weapon?

Without anything to go on, I suspect Simon doesn't much care for weapons of any kind and probably has little skill with them. (But what do I know? Maybe his parents made him practice with a .455 Webley until he was an expert.)

Inara, I suspect also doesn't care much for them but views them more as a necessary evil, and has some nominal skill with a small handgun. Possibly she even carries something similar to a short barreled Ladysmith.

Kaylee? Maybe she is fascinated with them as a piece of machinery, but not as a weapon. Being a 'natural' with mechanics, I suspect she would have an intuitive understanding of their operation and of ballistics, but I don't know about her actual skill with them.

As I understood, Inara would have been trained in weapon use during her Companion training. Not as any primary occupation, but for defensive or self-protection purposes as well as general familiarity with types and functions and handling - Companions must deal with many different types of men.

I expect Simon dealt with the results of firearm injuries enough to not endear him. Plus, as a surgeon, he may have felt that the violence that is inflicted upon the shooter was detrimental to the fine motor skills of a surgical hand.

Kaylee seemed quite inept with guns, just pointing them randomly with her eyes tightly closed for the duration, until River saved her at Niska's Skyplex in War Stories. On her home world, fixin' engines and getting sexed may have filled up her time.

Thank you, JewelStaiteFan;

The convention here is reply after the quote? Makes more sense to me than the top-posting convention on another forum (although to be fair, there is a valid reason for it there).

It's nice to see someone agrees with my supposition about Inara and her opinions on personal weapons. I did see a picture on this site of her handgun. It looked quite like a Buckmark .22 target pistol with a 5 or 6 chambered silencer/compensator or possibly a recoil weight on the business end. That kind of surprised me. As I said in my first post I would have expected her to have something more concealable. I don't recall anything in canon that specifies what gun she has but maybe I missed it.

Simon: yeah, that makes sense. Regardless of his skill with weapons, good, bad, or indifferent, he is unlikely to regard them as shiny.

Disappointing news about Kaylee. I was thinking about using her character in a setting involving at least a basic level of competence. Oh well, maybe I can rethink that and use a different character, although it seems nearly everyone else has already demonstrated considerable skill. Not a story killer, especially as so far all I have is an 'incident' with some fog in front and behind for pre-story and follow-on. I'll keep playing with it until something jells. :)

Already rethinking this. Kaylee has a thing for Simon doesn't she? Maybe I can recast this so he provides the motivation for Kaylee. And your suggestion his actually shooting might be detrimental to his surgeon's hands might fit nicely also.

Convention might be overstating it. It used to be more common here.
If I am replying to a specific point, I prefer to use the post of the original comment, and then insert a reply following it, such as here. If you are not familiar, just type "/quote" and "quote" inside brackets like "[]" and then your comment goes in between those commands. I left the BOLD in this reply because I'm just lazy.
Sometimes I have something original to say in a post, yet related, so I post the fresh comment before the quoted post, and then insert replies folowing the entire quote or in specific places in the quote.
Some people do not use the quote function, and then reply to something 5 posts prior, whereby others who posted within the 5 newer posts think the reply is to them, or nobody knows who is replying to whom. That gets confusing.

There was discussion of Inara's chosen weapon for the final battle in Serenity. Between the script and the final CGI, it had morphed to or from some archery device. There was much commentary about it on the DVD - or maybe the Collector Edition.
I replied here to the possibility of handgun, which I don't recall details of as much.
It may have been a deleted scene where she retrieves her combat weapon from her steamer chest, which was apparently put in the script as an excuse for her to return to Serenity (meaning Mal), and Mal confirmed that the contents of her trunk still smelled feminine. The shot of her weapon inside the trunk may have also included view of a smaller weapon, I just don't recall now.

Not to discount his possible handiness with a knife or scalpel-type device, but again, in regards to handguns, I suspect not so much.

You might wish to consider, if she has enough time in space, she might learn about it - perhaps some unique mechanical feature intrigues her enough that she delves into it. Unlikely that she would learn from Simon. She might learn from River - they both seem to have intuitive-like understandings of complex concepts.
Some here have fanfics regarding Kaylee and Jayne, and he might be able to teach her. One of the most poignant scenes was after Kaylee got shot in Pilot Serenity, and Jayne was crouched outside the med bay window, not interacting with the group at her side, but watching over her and her well being. He may wish to convince her to learn a bit, out of need for her self preservation.

Well, he was shot by something in the combat "My Turn" scene, and almost died, right?
And at that time, Kaylee felt helpless to save him, and poor little incapacitated River was the one to Open A Can Of Whoopa$$ and save the day.

Sorry. I didn't say that properly. I was thinking more that Simon's circumstances/needs might motivate Kaylee to learn at least basic handgun skills. And my plot element isn't something urgent requiring immediate Whoopa$$. Something that affects the entire ship on an ongoing basis, at least for a couple of weeks, possibly as much as a month. And from one of your earlier comments, if they can get to most any point in the 'Verse in a week or so, I'll have to tweak the plot to keep them from landing anywhere during this 'situation'.

Is there a link to some sort of FAQ or Glossary about the 'Verse? I feel a lot of my questions I should already know the answers to.

This may be more than you want, but click on "to the boards" and then in Blue Sun Room forum, select "Writer's Resource Package" thread. There is some stuff there, or links. Including navigation and technical stuff about the verse, travel, planets & moon, the Itinerary of Serenity during the show and film, etc.
Serenity can apparently cross the verse in a week at maximum power, but would normally not do so when not in a hurry or seeking cashy money. One of the episodes had them plotting a course that would take 18 days to their destination, instead of the couple days that Wash preferred. That might have been Out of Gas or Our Mrs. Reynolds.
