I was wondering what happened to the "Earth was used up..." spoken introduction. It was a nice touch in the TV episodes, and shone some light on the Firefly universe's history, how all of that came to be. Any idea why it isn't on there?

It was basically the network's idea and Joss didn't feel it was necessary on the DVD set.

I'm actually glad they removed it. I found it lame and corny. It must be mentioned that the history is mentioned in the series in off remarks and little stories here and there.

So, if one is paying attention throughout the series, you'll get the history that way. It's one of those things that I like obout Joss's work. It tends toward sublty.

Some else here has stated that in Heart of Gold when Mal goes to the theater, the shadow puppet show is pretty much that story. To bad it's in Chinese.

For me, it's like most overtures: you don't enjoy it because it's good music but because it cues the pleasure you know will follow.

I had no idea there even was an introduction until I saw it on the IMDB quotes list.

I think it would have cleared up a lot of things for me if it had been on the start of one of the episodes on the DVD. Most people will now be coming to this series through seeing the DVD and the story of how the war started and what the two sides represented are constantly referenced.

Maybe they'll resurrect it for the movie...

Book's little speech at the start is probably what made me fall in love with the series in the first place. "Find a job, find a crew, keep flying" was the first thing I latched onto when I saw the show. I think it's a pity it wasn't even a special feature.

Is there any video or clips or anything of it online?

Kind of like the theme music?

^Nah, the theme music is good in its own right.

Anyways, the fact that there were two different (and contradictory) intros, neither of which made scientific sense, is probably the reason why they weren't included.

I liked 'em both, and it sucks they're gone. I'm agree with the previously stated sentiment -- perfect fodder for a special feature.

Funny thing is, I didn't realize they weren't on the DVDs until this thread. D'OH!

YAY! I found a site with the original intros!

Now, which episodes had the introduction?

Nice, but what's the difference between their downloads of "Serenity" and the "Serenity:(Revised)"? Is there some scenes on this site that are NOT on the DVD set?

"Serenity (Revised)" is what's on the DVDs. "Serenity" is the original version which the network rejected in favor of "The Train Job".

Among the differences are:
-No Serenity Valley battle. Instead, Simon reads about SV on a computer, and Zoe talks about it some. That's in the deleted scenes on the DVDs.
-Introductory monolog by Joss Whedon.
-Alternate takes of some scenes, most notably when Book brings dinner for Inara.
-Reordering of a couple of scenes. In the original version, Mal mentions the Reaver encounter when interrogating the Fed, because the order of those scenes is switched.
-Different music in the original version.
