Trailers out already for movies coming out AFTER Serenity

America loves a winner!

Here it is mid November, and 2 trailers are out for movies that don't open till AFTER April. One , of course, is Star Wars. 'Nuff said. The other was some kids flick I can't even remember that is coming out sometime in Summer 2005.

Why can't they at LEAST move up the trailer 1 month and take advantage of the bigger holiday box office season? The movie came in under budget and on time, wouldn't it make sense to get the most exposure as possible by releasing a short trailer during Christmas ? Arrggghh!!!

I guess there are $ and production issues to consider, but being on the outside looking in, it seems like a big opportunity is being lost. My 2 cents.

Considering that the bulk of the content of the trailer for Revenge of the Sith is footage from a 27-year-old movie, you can barely call that a trailer. While the principle photography is done, there's tons of post-production work still to be done on both RotS and Serenity, including a lot of the shots that Universal probably really wants to include in a trailer.

Besides, it's not always a good idea to advertise too soon. You really don't want to start the serious pushing until closer to the release date.

Comparing it to Star Wars isn't really a valid comparison, because Star Wars is a separate category. It's like comparing a midlist science fiction author to Stephen King -- you're just not playing in the same ballfield.

Better make that 4 (four) cents! I agree with Auraptor. I want what I want when I want it! (spoiled much, Mal-licious?) And I think the trailer should be shown on my own personal tv ASAP. Oh, and Stephen Who?

Yeah, we have to keep in mind that SW: ROTS has a much larger advertising budget. Keeping up an advertising campaign (including paying to put up a trailer) for this long would be too expensive for a movie of Serenity's budget. They have to maximize the use of their resources.

As much as that sucks for us!!!

But seriously, I think 'Versal -- as they will be known after "Serenity" becomes a blockbuster franchise -- should be thinking outside the box on this one. I think they should be regularly releasing snippets of film and hi-res photos on the net, right now. The Browncoats would turn this into free advertising in the form of banners, T-Shirts, music videos, etc., and it would cost 'Versal nada.

Most movies don't garner the pre-release fan rabidity that "Serenity" has. By remaining traditional in this advertising campaign, 'Versal is wasting a valuable and unique resource -- the built-in fanbase -- that could have dovetailed quite effectively into their conventional promotional efforts.

I'm a little disappointed by the lack of vision this displays; but, as I've said before, people are only human.

Symmetrically equivalent to Alexander Pope's observation, "To be human is to err"...

KRAD, if you've got anyone's ear near the top of this foodchain, you might suggest this to them. I'm not talking full disclosure of movie details, just some digital stock that the artistic types hereabouts could turn into 'guerilla marketing' materials. I think that's the greatest failing over on the NOB: They've got a spot on the site for an AV Room, but no content from the studio. Does that seem right to you?

I think Rabit is right, Universal probably hasn't budgetted 1/10th the amount that will be spent advertising Star Wars...
and personally I would rather they spent the money doing a big blitz build up right before release (particularly on TV...I think the TV ads held 'The Grudge' a lot)

Of course we can't increase the budget or tell them where or when to spend it....
But we can make sure the local theaters know we are watching and waiting and hoping to see this film on opening weekend (and many times after that).
I think it would help if the local movie theaters get a heads-up from the fans that this one will be a biggie!

Could you please just make it stranger? Stranger. Odder. Could be weirder. More bizarre. How about uncanny?

Alot of local theatres like to work with local groups to help promote movie-going. I have seen everything from local libraries that had crafts for Harry Potter goers, to Klingon recruiting drives, to Veterans passing out informational flyers, to Monster Inc. coloring contests promoted by a local toy store. Doing this in February might be a good idea.

My understanding is that if you approach the theatre management, explain what you want to do, why you want to do it, show them what kind of space you'll need and, most importantly, how it promotes people to return to see movies, they will usually find a way to work with you.

Another thought would be to arrange a viewing at Media Play. I once did that with Star Trek, and the Media Play even provided some Star Trek movies (on VHS, so I am showing my age) for a drawing...their condition: People show up in costume and watch the movie. It might be different nowadays, but the only way to know is to call them!

a library in London is showing, for free (so no worries about copyright law) episodes of Buffy & Angel to be discussed with 'an expert'...

Well, it got me thinking...most of us have gotten pretty darn 'expert' about Firefly

We've seen it many times, discussed it with others, watched the commentaries, heard interviews....really...we could, each of us, lead an intelligent discussion about the show
the vision of the future

I'm thinking it might be fun to approach the local library,
set up a viewing of a couple of episodes
with the chance to continue to discuss the show afterwards

Well said!! I'm not asking for a huge, 2 minute + trailer w/ loads of FX shots and the like. How about just some short snippiets and just glimpses of our BDH. Something! I remember when Jurassic Park came out,before the trailers were shown, they put out large displays in theatre lobbys. It was definatly eye catching. I had read the book and knew it was coming out. I remember seeing a couple of kids just awestruck at the image of the T.Rex fossil logo and the whole display. They were asking their dad what this thing was, and the dad had no idea, but I could tell it had grabbed his attention.

Now, different movies are aimed at different audiences and I'm not in the business, but it just seems to me that it's folly to go through this holiday season and NOT have something in an official manner out promoting our BDM.

I know. I'm just a fan. I want things done the way I want them done, and I want them done NOW!
