How's that?

In case someone didn't know, way back when Pocketbooks wanted to release a Firefly/Serenity line of novels. Many authors (including our own KRAD, the author of the Serenity novelization) submitted proposals for their books. Steven Brust, author of the Vlad Taltos fantasy series, had a such a vivid idea he went ahead and wrote a full novel to turn in. None of the entries were approved. He eventually released his novel as a fanfic, My Own Kind of Freedom.

It's available here in a few ebook formats.

Actually, its surprising that this hasn't been done before, considering the number of other, quite successful, novels that have been generously steeped in essence-of-Firefly

Immediately springing to mind are:
Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet/A Closed and Common Orbit
Pelquin's Comet/The Ion Raider
The Expanse series (the second book and onwards are more Firefly-esque than the TV show).

Thx Moose! NEW! That is awesome! By now I'm sure most if not all of us have these characters so well ingrained in our heads that we will actually be able to "see" these books happen like another episode. More please!

Don't think Joss was allowed to. I doubt that Disney buying part of Fox out just happened to be a coincidence, I think he finally got approval. Makes me wonder about Firefly Online, too...

Pocketbooks was all set to publish a line of books when Serenity came out.

Yep. Overall I liked it.
The story itself is a bit meh, but they did a good job with the characters.
Everyone gets a little bit of time in the spotlight, with Mal and Book getting the most.
Kinda wish they’d do an audiobook with someone (or ones) from the cast doing the reading.
