Well, I feel a bit foolish. I just recently discovered the program, only a month ago set my VCR to record the show and *poof* it's gone

.I remember a few good programs fox aired and immediatly cancelled, once I was addicted to them. But, they never seem to tire of airing controversy. I guess if it doesn't piss folks off, it aint worth airing. I hope they offer a multi DVD set of all the episodes, someday. Not really saying anything of value here, it's just that there seems a lack of decent entertainment these days...seems a shame to kill something that at least removes you momentarily from the day to day grind.

the show, and we find out in a few weeks.
People are sending postcards to UPN, CBS,
and most importantly, their local UPN affiliate.
Some affiliates are expressing interest, and
if many of them call UPN, that could make a
difference.

Yeah, tell them about your recent introduction to the series, how you miss it. In fact, if you know of anyone else who just started watching, refer to them too!

Let the execs at UPN and your local UPN affiliate know that you want the program back. With any luck, it will be.

I work at my city's UPN affiliate, and my advice would be do not send your local UPN affiliate any postcards. Send them to the network!

The affiliates have as much influence over network show programming as the guy who owns the McDonald's franchise on the corner does over the menu. If McDonalds decides they're gonna pull the Big Mac and replace it with kung pow chicken then that's what you'll get in your town too.

They are too busy with their own local issues, and I would bet the programming director at my station has no idea what a "Firefly" is.

Depending on what part of the country you're in, that might even literally be true! My brother once tried to tell a friend about the lightning-bug in California, and the Californian had never heard of such a thing, thought the idea of a bug with a butt that lights up sounded absurd, and didn't believe him...

UPN and the UPN sponsers are being bombarded too.
This will help.

That makes sense about the affiliates not
getting a say in what to air.

We just wanted word to spread, and if the affiliate calls simply to ask about firefly, that is what is helpful. We know they don't
get any final say in the matter. Even if
the director calls to say "what's a firefly?".

That's actually not the case. Affiliates will contact their network rep. Some actually already have contacted the network, asking about Firefly.
It's almost better than the postcards we send, because the affiliates have more of a voice than the fans. It's not so much like McDonalds, because there are millions of McDonald's worldwide. There are only dozens of affiliates.

It's a combined buzz. Fans send postcards to affiliates, the network, and sponsors, and send letters to media outlets.

Only small handfulls of the affiliates, sponsors, and media outlets will contact UPN regarding Firefly, but if one of each calls per week, it keeps the show fresh, keeps a "buzz" about the show.

Each affiliate will behave differently. The LA affiliate will probably be more interested that the Rhode Island affiliate. If it's a slow news week, a reporter may pick it up as a human interest story, and thus bring some coverage to Firefly. For example, Alan Tudyk is from Texas. Perhaps the affiliate there would be interested in running a news story about Firefly, given that there's a hometown boy that might be around for interview.

That's a sort of pie-in-the-sky example, but it's a possibility.

When BtVS moved to UPN, the LA affiliate called Kristen asking if there was a possibility of a fan party that they could cover. Not every affiliate was interested in that, but in LA, it was big news. The network had no idea that the party would happen, it was all the affiliate.

No, the affiliates don't make programming decisions, but they do have the power to call the home office and say, "yo, what's up with Firefly?" And already, reports are coming in that it's happened.
They also have the power to run news stories, if they get a thousand postcards.

No fireflies, no chickadees, no cardinals, no eastern bluejays (we have Stellar's jays and scrub jays, not as flashy) and NO 17-year cicadas.

Our UPN affiliate replied they had heard of Firefly - but weren't interested unless the network was interested. They had Enterprise and the latest rehash of Twilight Zone.

And yeah - calling up affiliates is like complaining to the cashier of a supermarket about rotten tomatoes. You have to talk to the store manager about the problem, cashier can do nothing but ring you up and take your money. And they normally couldn't care less.
