DRACOS

I dug up this little article/interview thing with Summer on the Sci-Fi Weekly newsletter I get in my e-mail. What she says is interesting to say the least.

WARNING: If you dont want to know about character development of any kind I'd suggest you not read on.

Diving Into Serenity's River
"Summer Glau, who reprises the role of River in the upcoming SF movie Serenity, told SCI FI Wire that the film version of Fox's canceled Firefly will resolve many questions about her enigmatic character. "We were setting up all the characters [in the TV show]," Glau said in an interview during a break in filming last summer at Universal Studios in Los Angeles. "We were going back into the past and trying to set up each storyline for each character. And my character was just getting started, and now in the film you're really going to see an explosion of what's really going on with River. It's going to be exciting."

In Firefly, the crew of a transport ship 500 years in the future found themselves inadvertently aiding the escape of River from a top-secret Alliance facility, with the help of her brother, Simon Tam (Sean Maher). There were hints that River had acquired some martial arts and weapons skills, which the film Serenity will develop, Glau said. "I do a lot of wire work, so I get to do a lot of flipping and running up walls, so it's really exciting," she said. "I'm not a gymnast. I still don't like being upside down. If I don't know what my legs are doing up there, it makes me nervous."

Glau added, "When they first met with me to try to figure out what my physicality was, we went over things, and what we ended up with is kind of a blend of wu shu, kung fu and kick boxing. It's kind of tailored to my abilities, because I was a ballet dancer before I started acting. And so, you know, looking at the way I moved and seeing what kind of a body type I had, that's what they chose."

Glau said that it took only a little while to reacquaint herself with River once production started last spring. "I was very nervous," she said. "I was very nervous. I hadn't played River for a year and a half. I was so close to her in the beginning and through the whole series. And then when I came in for my first read-through with the entire cast, I was shaking and sweating, and I was really scared. And then after the first few days it felt like I'd never left." Serenity, which also stars Nathan Fillion and is directed by series creator Joss Whedon, is slated for release in April 2005. The film is being released by Universal, which is owned by NBC Universal, which also owns SCIFI.COM."

Interesting. I just hope that she's kind of overstating it and it isn't as wire-fu as she makes it sound. That would sort of suck.

No Blue Sun. Kaylee Lite. Wash's tailored flight-suit. I'm getting a bad feeling about this.

I'll readily admit that, while I'm looking forward to the movie, I'm not getting my hopes up.

One of the beauties of the series was that we were able to see significant character development over a long period of time. You just can't get that in a movie, not like we had in the series. Same with larger plot elements, such as dropping the Blue Sun angle to things.

Also, we, as fans of the series, have expectations, but Joss is taking things a little differently. One thing that people might have forgotten is that there has been mention of the fact that Book is now going to be different, less of the pure Christian and more of a mix of religions, to include something more along the lines of the Native American beliefs. A part of me doesn't mind that but a part of me doesn't like it that the characters that we grew to know and love are being - for lack of a better term - messed with.

Again, I'm not complaining, just observing. It's because of these and other changes that I'm not getting my hopes up. It's just not worth it. If I'm pleasantly surprised, then I'll be happy. I'd rather be pleasantly surprised than set my expectations too high and have them dashed...

I just keep looking at the title of the thread...of course she speaks! How else would she act and say all those wonderfully strange things!?

"Kaylee lite" -- whuh? Did I miss something? When was it disclosed that Kaylee would have smaller part in the film? Or do you mean her weight loss?

Don't be afraid RABIT, I doubt they'll resolve every issue in the Firefly universe in Serenity. Two more movies may come if you can get enough of your friends to the theater to see it.

It's not like Blue Sun featured in that many episodes is it? I'd be surprised if they aren't in the wings somewhere though, what with the film involving River's past. It's going to be a movie, not a new season, we need to adjust to that.

No BlueSun? My 1st thought is...! But then I remember that the whole idea is to have this project be a trilogy, so I don't fret too much about it. THEN I think again...premier date pushed back till Sept, Kaylee Lite(wtf?), litle or no Book ?

Folks, the pay off needed for this whole thing is really starting to get enormous. I may have to rethink my expectations here.

No Blue Sun?! Oh my goodness! What will we do without the coffee cans, tee-shirts, and soda pop commercials? This movie is so gonna suck!

Is that sarcasm I'm sensing? Mmmmmm, could be. But, as I pointed out, it's not JUST the absense of BlueSun in the plot ( which was somw what significant ) but also what is becoming a laundry list of omissions and now the BDD ( Big Damn Delay ).

The fact that I bought a couple of BlueSun T-Shirts won't take away anything from my persective and in fact it might make those items even MORE unique. I'm just getting the creepifying feeling that OUR beloved Firefly is being homogonized and retrofitted to meet Corp studio specifications so much that we might not recognize it.

Yea, hope still remains. But I'm beginning to feel more and more like Mal at the battle of Serenity.

I know what you mean; I only came upon Firefly after its cancellation, so the anti-corporate arc that may have pivoted about Blue Sun was an important conjecture for me too. Still, we had the dream for two years and if Whedon wants to take it somewhere else, it's his creation. If all that remains of Firefly is the branding, perhaps that's a statement in itself

I might be wrong but I thought it wasnt that they was no blue sun in the film just that it would only be visable in the background as it was for most of the series. Hopefully we'll get to see more of it in the sequels.

Were there a god, I might make a little prayer that you are right. However, seeing a post that says there is NO BlueSun sorta confuses the issue. While we did SEE BlueSun often enough, no one ever actually MENTIONED BlueSun in the series. So, does that mean there is no discussion of BlueSun in the script ? ... and does that leave the door open for the plot to be layed out much like it was in the series ?

See, there I go again..making wild, unsubstantiated reaches about something of a lesser detail when the BIG thing is that we have to wait almost a whole year now. Damnit.

ZOID

AURaptor, PurpleBelly and other fidgeters:

There's this guy who works with me. Every day he comes in at 9 AM and within 15 minutes is checking his watch. All day. By the time he's been at work for two hours, he's saying things like, "God, is it 3 o'clock yet?!"

I usually ask, "Why? Have you got an arson to get to?" You're in a hurry for it to get here, so you can spend 2 - 3 hours in the theatre, and then wait another two years for the next one?

These are the glory days, so enjoy them for the (extended) time they are here. As another Browncoat so aptly pointed out, if it does well, this site and all its brethren will be inundated for at least 3 months with n00bs from hell (whom we will all tolerate as patiently as possible, as we were once tolerated). If it does poorly, this site and its ilk will be like ghost towns virtually overnight, with only zoid still hanging around 'til the end of the next Ice Age (see also, 'One of an Infinite Number of Actual Futures').

Negativity is useful. You know I appreciate the alternative viewpoint. I actually prefer it to pollyannaism; but my own viewpoint falls somewhere in between those black-and-white extremes. In any case, we do all have to wait for the movie. In my experience, the best way to wait for something is to pay attention to something other than the passage of time, and to refrain from 'tai kwan dodo' prophesies of gloom and doom...

Realistically,

zoid

I just dug out my video of the San Diego Comic Con and here is a direct quote from Joss: "Blue Sun appears, but the Blue Sun corporation as a concept is not a major theme of the movie".

So, much the same as the series.

ziod: Your countenance has been nothing short of phenominal. I'll admitt my utter selfishness of hearing the news and thinking not but the worst of all of this. To be honest, I've gone from skeptic to cynic per the BDM. Sitting in w/ Jewel on that Sun nite at DragonCon would have made me believe in almost anything. Ok, so Matty was there.... so I don't believe in 'anything'..

We were all ready for April. 'Nuff said. Now I'm hearing comments about this or that.....and I'm not sure I know what the hell to think anymore.
( yes I do) Trust Joss. Jewel said those exact words @ DC. TRUST JOSS.

(DEEP BREATH )

ok. I'm done w/ the shock. I'm fine now. All is well. (sigh)

OK. Count me in.
