Ain't It Cool News's TV reviewer, Hercules, has published his list of the 20 best shows of 2002. The top four:

1. Buffy the Vampire Slayer (of course)
2. 24
3. Gilmore Girls
4. Firefly

Believe it or not, Ain't It Cool News does get its fair share of respect in Hollywood; the site's creator and head honcho, Harry Knowles, was a guest-critic alongside Roger Ebert after his partner Gene Siskel passed away a few years ago.

You can read Herc's whole list here: http://aint-it-cool.com/display.cgi?id=14108

Edit: Herc's blurb about Firefly is good enough to warrant quoting in its entirety. Behold:

4. Firefly. “Oh, hey, free soup!” Why is this, an inspired seriocomic entertainment and the best new show of 2002, so slow to attract an audience? Are general audiences now so numbed and overwhelmed by the sheer number of low-budget “Star Trek” knockoffs floating around cable and syndication? Were the sci-fi geeks bewildered by the show’s western trappings (or perhaps too young to remember how “Urban Cowboy” perverted real-life American fashion 25 years ago)? I mean, Jayne wears T-shirts, Kaylee wears coveralls and belly-shirts, there are ATVs and machine guns; it’s not like the show adheres slavishly to its Old West trappings. Certainly, the more people watch “Firefly,” with its large cast of complex and entertaining regulars, the more they seem to like it. The Fox netlet ordered a production stoppage after just 15 filmed hours, but the show’s producers are hopeful that UPN may put Serenity back in the air before its fabulous cast disperses. Let’s hope we’ll yet learn why the bounty hunter said Book was no shepherd.

I hope the right people at CBS and UPN are paying attention....

They happen to be right in this case (that Firefly is a good, entertaining show), but AICN is the tabloid equivalent of movie news/opinions. They hold about as much credibility as a soggy paper sack can hold wet sand...not much.

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

Hey, they don't HAVE to be paying attention! How 'bout including the web address in YOUR POSTCARDS!?

(Just one more reason to send one of those things, ya know!)

The folk at AICN may not be Hollywood powerbrokers, but Harry Knowles' site is looked upon by the industry as much more than a mere fansite. The reading eyes of AICN's net audience are sought after by the studios. So much so that Knowles gets flown to movie sets by the studios while films are in production so he can write an article generating advance buzz (they hope... he's still a critic).

Off the top of my head, I recall reading about his seperate excursions to Prague (one to the set of "From Hell" the other "Blade 2") and to New Zealand ("Lord of the Rings"). So someone enjoys the benefits of whatever it is that Harry provides their projects.

Trust me, UPN knows what AICN is. That network sends advance review copies of Enterprise to Herc every week.

It only helps our cause that Firefly made AICN's top 4 best shows of 2002 (Best new show overall since spots 1-3 were given to existing shows). This fact is worth mentioning in our cards and letters to UPN.

You might be surprised to learn that Harry was ranked as one of the 100 most powerfull people in Hollywood last year by Entertainment Weekly.

Holllywood does know AICN and they do respect it for what it is.

Don't forget his recent trip to China (!) to visit the set of Tarantino's Kill Bill. Yeah, Harry's definitely one of the truly weirdo Hollywood stories. On the one hand, he runs a web site that both looks and reads like it was assembled by a teenager with a serious case of ADD. On the other hand, studios send him advance prints of movies like The Two Towers to show at his film festival, quaintly named "Butt-Numb-A-Thon."

The problem is that the movies and shows Harry and his reviewers like almost always do really well, and the ones that they pan almost always fail at the B.O. He's a strange guy-- think Comic Book Guy from the Simpsons only without the charming interpersonal skills-- but he really seems to have the pulse of something or other.

Regarding what the bounty hunter said: Absolutely!
It was almost spoken as a throw-away line but it certainly made my ears prick up.
"That ain't no shepherd."
Wellwellwell...

Here's hoping that the mention at AICN pricks up some ears at one of the networks.
