so, I was wondering--is there anything in an episode that establishes whether Mal considers Book as part of his crew?

In "Serenity" we never see him declare a destination that he's heading for--we do get that great moment where he talks to Kaylee about the journey. We get other moments that let us see that Book considers that he belongs on Serenity, but has he ever gotten the direct nod that says Mal considers him part of the Serenity crew? Mal gave explicit acknowlegement to Simon (and tacitly to River). Is Book still paying a regular room and board fee, or has his help in rescuing Mal from Niska and providing useful advice during "The Gift" and "Our Mrs. Reynolds" moved him to crew status?

I think it is implicit. If Mal didn't want him on the crew, it would be made known.

the best evidence i have is in shindig when simon, book and jayne are playing cards. they are betting with slips of paper with duties written on them around the ship (garbage, septic vac, dishes etc). apparently having the slips of paper means you are exempt from performing these duties. since book is gambling with these "chips" and even wins a hand, we can assume he is assigned duties on the ship and is therefore a member of the official crew.

In the "Dead Or Alive" script, Mal gave Book some money for his part in the job they pulled for the Alliance. So the creators at least intended to make it explicit that he was part of the crew even if it never permeated on screen.

Harken: "Seems odd that you would name your ship after a battle you were on the wrong side of."
Mal: "May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one."

In "Safe" when Book gets shot and they leave the planet without Simon or River, Mal says something like "we've already lost two crewmembers today, we're not gonna lose a third" (implying that if they don't move, Book will die).

I love Book on the bridge. He seems very comfortable and has clear thoughts in tuff times. Mal aint no dummy and I think he feels good about having Book's 'services' on the bridge.

Where does one find these unshot scripts? And WTF is "The Gift"?

Guessing its avriation of the name for "The Message"? Doubt Joss would give an ep the same name as a buffy ep.

I agree w/theplague that 'Safe' is the best evidence
Mal really didn't want to go to the Alliance for help
he only did that because he cared about Book's safety

Book proved his worth regardless of what Mal thought right from the beginning. He knocked out dobson the lawman/mole during Serenity, he protected the crew during war stories with much blasting of kneecaps, he defended the whorehouse in heart of gold, he helped Jayne during Trash, he's helped almost everyone in one way or another. So I agree with whomever it was that said Book's value to the crew is implicit... no need for anyone to tell him anything.
