I'm kind of hurt that there were people who went to the pre-screening of Serenity, and yet no one posted the exact when and where of the screening---at least not that I've been able to find. ONE person posted a thing that they thought it was gonna be one day this last week, but I didn't see a single announcement about the screening people went to in LA. Why? Why would people NOT share this information?

Honestly, from the spoilers thread, it seems as though some people are getting off on the fact that THEY got to see a sneak peak and others didn't. Someone else mentioned that the hints and innuendos are kind of annoying, and I agree.

I'm not trying to be mean, but I'm hurt that the information wasn't really shared, and now that some people have seen a sneak peak, I'm hurt that they're giving those hints and innuendos.

Sorry, but I just wanted to make my feelings known.

It could have been something you needed advance tickets or other invite to get into. I'm pretty sure our fellow browncoats would have spread the word if it had been something anyone could get in to see.

I did notice a pre screening post and then not much after that till AFTER the screening. Do they do more than one ? I don't know much about that sort of stuff, but seems that if the 1st one went so well, then they're less likely do do another. ( ? )

In a marketing sense, which for once does matter in this context, the presence of a large number of fans at the screening was a failure of canvassing technique - I suspect wrists have been slapped

Simple answer: fans.

Without the information online, the place was still PACKED with fans. They can't run test screenings full of fans.

Chris (the producer) was at the screen (As was joss, keeping a low profile), and Chris said they're probably going to run test screenings across the US... Unspoken reason, don't get as many fans turning up then.

The release date is for the fans - the test screenings are supposed to be for the studio.

Crap, I'm going to have to get signed up with one of those marketing groups that has you test everything from soup to toilet paper. This way, I can get into the test screening.

I believe that the imput of "certain" fans is valuable. Not the uber-geeks without a life outside of the fandom but rather, the folk who enjoy the show for its intelligent writing, character development and superior acting.

If it sucks due to bad writing, weak plotline or something else, I'll say it. I won't complain because they put our captain into ankle boots when "everyone knows" he wears knee-high boots.

I read on another board that the tickets were handed out at a mall and outside a comic book store.

My theater in NJ does test screenings all the time.

They'll be more I'm sure!

I'm personally going to avoid anything like this. I just wanna watch the film when it comes out, without anybody giving things away before hand.

That's the big drawback in the delay. It just means there's more time for snippets of info to be released before I get to see it.

Yeah, most test screenings of that nature...even the
people who go have no idea what movie their going to see until the very last second.

They are offered tickets to an advance screening and are invited to come. They don't find out what movie their going to see until a small annoucement before the showing.

So its not that those who went actively kept the sercret they were going to see Serenity before anyone. They just got really lucky.

Also, anyone ever heard of advance screenings happening in Austin? Is it worth it for me to find all the comic book shops in the city and visit them daily just in case some dude with a clipboard is hanging out around the entrance?

I was once asked to go for a screening of some movie that I can't remember. I didn't go but I do remember that you don't have very much advanced warning. They certainly don't take out a newspaper ad or anything.

I used to work in Westwood, which has some of of the people who hand out tickets for prescreenings. It's basically a guy on a street corner with a clipboard and when he's done finding a certain number of people, he's gone. A presecreening is something that you have to be in the right place at the right time to go and see. By the time that someone gets home, posts the info, Angelinos read it and battle the traffic down to Santa Monica or Westwood, the prescreener is already gone.

Yup. Bruisersmom is right-on in regards to the dude (gender neutral usage of the word) with the clipboard standing in front of the theater. For all Disney related flicks it used to be the Burbank AMC - I'm not sure if that is the current sign-up spot as it's been more than a decade since I frequented that neighborhood. It tended to be a crap shoot on which movie you actually saw. I have no idea where Universal does their stuff.

* warning: digression...

The last time I did one of those it was a Tommy Chong starring role (don't worry, you read that correctly) called "Far Out Man" that was so absolutely terrible the theater was quieter than a tomb throughout the entire screening. The only good thing about the experience was how comfortable the chairs were (well...that and Rae Dawn Chong who I've always had a crush on no matter how crappy the role).

On a side note, I actually rented the movie years later out of curiousity and they had mage huge changes between the screening and the actual release (hopefully based in part on the negative feedback I provided on my card

).

So this is a long, round about way, of saying that I'm surprised that we had any advance notice at all that there was going to be a screening and that I'm glad that at least some browncoats were able to get in on the action. Pretty lucky based on my previous experience with movie screenings.

From what I understand, someone was handing out flyers at a mall and also at the theater where the screening was the weekend before.

I have a friend who has a friend who knows someone at Universal so she ended up with some flyers.

Other people had to go to the house of strangers to get the flyers.

I call it LA Browncoat resoucefullness.

The theater it was showing at was nowhere near Hollywood or Burbank. I live in Burbank and I think Chatsworth is about 30 miles NW of here.

It wasn't easy getting there at rush hour and people came from up to 3 hours away to be there.

Just want to start out that being an extra in the film had absolutely nothing to do with some of them attending. Those BDE were just once again graced with luck and happened to be at the right place at the right time.

As several have posted, these types of advanced screenings get audience members by handing out flyers in front of movie theaters. I live in Orange County, and have been approached for several screenings before. The big difference with the Serenity screening is the flyers actually gave the title, Joss Whedon’s name, and a synopsis of the film. Normally that is not the case. The clipboard people usually give you the genre, a few clues, and maybe an actor or two. I’ve never heard of them promoting what movie they were screening.

Two days before the screening, a friend of mine was able to grab an extra flyer for me. I had to have a flyer to make a reservation. I had to give information from my flyer and answer questions to get a reservation. I had to have a reservation and the flyer to get a ticket at theater. The lady on the phone said flyers were no longer being given out. It was two days before the screening, everything was happening very fast. It was stressed to me repeatedly as I made my reservation that I had to have my flyer when I got to the theater.

People who had both RSVPs and flyers were turned away due to lack of space. People who had been waiting in line earlier than others were turned away when the screeners went down the line looking for certain demographics. I was happy when I reached the front of the line until a group of teenagers where placed in front of me to ensure they got in first. The clipboard people were very thorough about checking our flyers and our names/reservation information.

I didn’t consider posting the information because once I heard about zero flyers and all the stipulations, my mind shifted to other concerns with less than 48 hours to go. Working out details with my friend, figuring out how to maneuver through two and a half hours of rush hour traffic, and rescheduling the five parent conferences I had scheduled that day. I am so, so sorry that some people were hurt by this. I don’t think that was anyone’s intention at all.

Screeners come up to you if they want to give you a ticket. You don't walk up to them and say, "I want to see a screening of Serenity." When I worked in Westwood sometimes they would stop me on the sidewalk or walk up to me in a cafe and ask me if I wanted to see such and such a movie and other times they looked right at me and didn't say a thing.
