So...where's Serenity? Where's any indication of our BDHs?

This could be a new age self-help book for all we know. It looks like an L. Ron Hubbard book. Is this really what they went with?

No offense to you Sniper, good catch. But this really isn't a very good cover.

You'd probably be hard-pressed to find a self help book with that subtitle.

Still, it doesn't show anything having to do with the movie or the series!

Bad, bad.

I am of the not pleased.

Once again. fff.net posters upset about nothing. *sigh*

That may not even be the real cover. It says that it is edited by someone, not Jane.

You people are silly.

Well according to Whedonesque...it's for real.

This is what they have to say....
"Essay collection will dissect Firefly/Serenity till it hurts "Finding Serenity" from BenBella Books promises to be challenging and stimulating, an insider tells me. The essays will focus on the TV series -- what was, what could have been -- since most of the pieces are already done. It's due in April"

It's a nothing part til you don't got one, then you have to go to ebay.....aaaaagh!

I know the book is for real. Keith and another OB poster who authored essays in it has confirmed it.

I don't necessarily trust that what is being shown is the true cover of the book.

Amazon has a cover for Keith's novelization of the movie up on its site and Keith has already told us that that cover is bogus.

Howdy, T. Sage advice (or Cilantro!). While this may be a temporary cover (like the Serenity one), it's the cover on the publisher's web site:

http://www.benbellabooks.com/upcomingline.html

I'm not sure what's going on with the editor line. Glenn Yeffeth is the Publisher and the editor of the Buffy and Angel anthologies by his publishing house. Amazon lists both him and Jane Espenson editing. The publisher site has Glenn Yeffeth on the cover but Jane EspensEn editing. So...??

I wasn't "whining", you jerk. I was expressing my displeasure of the book's cover. It was posted so we could talk about it, right? Well I don't think it's appropriate for Firefly. I don't think its good enough. What's "banal" about that?

What's with the oh so superior attitude, anyway? Who the hell are you to condescend to me that way?

I am sick of reading that everything isn't "good" enough for Firefly fans.

I think we should be grateful for the 14 episodes we got. The show was in danger of cancelation before it even aired.

And we should be estatic about the movie and the books being written. Who the hell cares about the cover? How can that possibly be important?

Some of us have been working our asses off for over two years to help relaize the kind of reality where there are books and a few of you don't think the cover is good enough?

Banal!

Taking the cover art discussion back to a reasonable level, folks...

I'd agree that something with the BDH's on it would be perhaps better (people here sure have made movie posters that would work), BUT here's a theory I think would be cool - perhaps the planet is the Earth-that-Was, being consumed by the flames of our dying sun...now that would be shiny, right?

Would fit in with the book's theme, too. From what I recall, it's a lot of making-of-Firefly, backstory kind of stuff. Perhaps it has some of the true history revealed in there! And we'll probably get it before the BDM, which would be great.

from tlacook's love of all things firefly, to the people who were just interested in saying they would like to see a better cover for a book, I think you folks likely encompass the whole spectrum of fan lunacy. TLA, please, let people express their displeasure. They can like or dislike whatever they want. Just because something is given to fans, doesn't mean they should jump up and down and thank the powers that be. It sounds from your posts like you probably work for the producers of this stuff somehow, otherwise you'd likely realize that not everything firefly is the be-all-end-all. Take the criticism as it was meant. People aren't calling you down personally for a cover they don't like... or are they? You defend it like the artist who made it. Fess up.

As an afterthought, I thought I'd let you know that I happen to like your artwork.

ROFL!

I wish I had anything to do with it. No, I am just a number cruncher with no connection to Universal/Fox or any publishing company, with a passion for Firefly. One of the ones who saw every episode as it originally aired and felt like she was gutpunched when they cancelled it. And then kicked while down as one network after another turned it down.

I have no problem with people expressing their opinions and if they are expressing them on a public message board they had better be ready to hear that their opinions suck.

I am so very grateful for all the new fans because they are the reason we will have a second and maybe even third movie but, some of them don't realize what has occured over the last two years and sound a little like ungrateful spoiled 3 year olds.

I appreciate your comments and I see where you are coming from but, I will contunue to voice my "opinion" on other people's "opinions", Lest everyone reading this board think all Serenity fans are a bunch of ungrateful, elitist whiners.

I agree with the heart of your words, but in reality, it's mainly been the whiners who got us the show on dvd and it was also the whiners who got us the big damn movie. If they had accepted the status quo, we'd still be watching crappy-looking downloaded copies of the episodes, wouldn't we?

There is a difference between proactively working toward a goal. (I was one of those peopel sending postcards and pre-ordering the DVD. I have purchased 15 copies of the DVD so far. And have converted probably 20 to 30 people.)

And compalining about someone else's creative product. Jane and Keith, and Ying and others have worked hard to write this love letter to the series Firefly and if the silly picture on the cover does not meet expectations then I think a different tack could be taken to change it.

Instead of bitching about not liking it, maybe you artistic types should write the publisher and submit artwork (gratis, of course). Maybe giving positive examples saying what you think would better exemplify Firefly would make more sense than saying negative things.

It is all in the delivvery folks. One method is bitchy and whiny and the other is proactive and helpful.

I'm just saying.

I don't expect anyone here to change their behavior. I have been lurking here since Haken started the site but, have just recently started posting in order to counteract the overwhelming negativity that has begun to appear here.

Be proactive and positive people. Don't be passive and don't settle for bitching and whining when you may actually have the power to effect the change you want.

If you don't like something. Do something about it. Don't dwell in your little puddle of negativity.

I have said my piece. Bring on the flames.

Don't you feel like you've kind of joined all of those aspects into one. You're trying to be helpful and proactive, yet at the same time you're whining and bitching about other people being too whiny and bitchy. It's pretty funny really. I love a good bit. You could write comedy. Keep it coming!!

Has it occurred to anyone that there may well be copyright issues concerning what can and can't feature on the cover art? The cost of using images owned by a third party may be prohibitive. It is also possible that despite the participants being linked to the show, the book itself is an unofficial guide and is not therefore allowed to feature images from the show.

That happened a lot with Buffy books about the series when they first hit the stores.

Just my thoughts on the matter...

Andy

Tolerance or intolerance is your choice, but I personally don't think that opinions should be judged except on the accuracy of the facts that launch them. Regardless of whether this is the final cover or not, people have opinions about it and wish to express them here. Aesthetics and preferences aside, we all want a cover that will make people interested in Firefly and Serenity and make them go see the movie. A lot. Especially in the first two weekends.

Personally, I'd also like people to buy the book, but I might be a little biased with the writing for it and all...

Good point Andy.

I am sure that the vast majority (if not all) of still shots of the crew belong to either Fox or Universal. So without paying what would probably be an astronomical licensing fee, it isn't very realistic to expect pictures of Serenity or the crew on the cover.

Andy has hit the nail on the head. Look at the rest of BenBella's web site at http://www.benbellabooks.com. Note that none of their covers have images from the shows themselves, not their Buffy book, not their Angel book, not their Stargate book, and that's because those images cost mucho bucks -- bucks that BenBella, as a comparatively tiny publisher, cannot afford without raising the cover price to something considerably higher than eighteen bucks.
