So, last night I'm watching the ep of "24" that I taped Tuesday night (Laker game conflict. What can I say?) and I finally figured out why "Fastlane" is getting all pimped by Fox:
I counted the number of shots in the promo and more than half of them were of half-dressed women.
It was almost like watching an ad for rutting "Girls Gone Wild" mixed in with a cop show, I swear.
Between "Joe 'Let's Watch Women Make Asses Of Themselves' Millionaire" and the other realitycrap on Fox, I am 99.9% sure that 1)this will be the last season for "24" and 2)if the "X-Files" were a new Fox show today, it would be canceled after 6 shows.

I suspect that's why the character of Kim Bauer is still hanging around on '24' -- to provide the "young hottie in distress" factor. Her storyline is the weakest part of the show.

If there is a third season, I vote that Kim comes back as the chief villain, having been driven insane by the events of the first two seasons...

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Unfortunately, networks know that sex and scantily clad women fetch ratings, so they will pimp out young actress, go w/ big explosions, lots of violence, and car chases to grab viewers since the show will lack in plot.

Damn shame. Why can't they do all of that
*and* a good storyline too?

They did. The show was called Firefly. Perhaps you're heard of it?

Ok, they didn't pimp Inara out. Technically she had no pimp. But she did have a nude bathing scene, and a lesbian scene. I hear that men find that sexy.

Which brings me to an only partly related question: Men thinking lesbian-action is hot; whats up with that?

Come to think of it, I don't want to know the answer. And yes, I am running on roughtly three hours of sleep.

XANDER: Oh. Not that I wouldn't be all ears if you wanted to tell me a secret about you two. Even if it was very, very naughty.

I can't speak for the men, but there are hundreds of straight female slashfic fans who think guy-guy action is VERY hot. Oh baby!

Oh yes, it's just like an accident on
the side of the road, isn't it...

You wish and hope that it wouldn't happen.
You hate it when it does. You can just
barely watch it. You probably want to
avoid looking at it.

... But yet, there is that morbid curiosity,
what is going on? what are they doing?
what's going to happen next?
ARGGGGGHH!

I hadn't been following the fansites or news, so I had my regular Friday night VCR programs going - Firefly, followed by Farscape. I had wondered about Firefly, since it hadn't been on since the "Serenity' ep - which I missed the second half of cause I only had an hour set, didnt know it was 2-hour.
Then Friday past, home from work, rewind, and here is this utter piece of crap called Fastlane. Uh-oh, says I, this is one of Fox's big shows, so whither Firefly, and now I know the bad news.
Now I like sexy women in skimpy or tight clothes well enough, but Fastlane .. why bother trying to explain its crappiness. It makes Miami Vice look like Ibsen. Cool guns, though - Desert Eagles and so on.
As for Fox pimpin' - well, that's Fox, and that's the show biz.
Of course, Elisha Cuthbert is on 24 largely to be the eye candy (though the other women are fine, too), and I have been a fan of Elisha's for a looooong time.

But I have also been a fan of Jewel's for a loooonng time, and I was delighted when she showed up in the cast of Firefly, I adore Jewel and I loved Kaylee. I really liked the show, and talked it up to people who hadn't seen it, and I am saddened to see it cancelled.

As for campaigns to save it - remember Crusade? Big post-B5 effort from JMS that tried but failed and got axed - I liked it, too - but too intelligent for the suits and didn't appease the gods of ratings. Harsh Realm? Another like casualty. And I liked Dark Angel, too, first season, at least, and it coulda survived, but it jumped the shark after the first season and lost a lot of loyal fans for that.
Meanwhile, outside the "Hollywood system," an earlier Canada-U.K. show called Starhunter, uncannily similar to Firefly in many ways, continues to run on Space cable channel in Canada. Low-budget, nowhere near as good as Firefly, but at least it has yet another Canadian hottie, Tanya Allen, in the cast.
And waaaay outside the "Hollywood system" you have Farscape, which had a great run, despite wome weird moves, and which has probably quit while it was ahead.
And, speaking of weirdness, who can explain the survival of Lexx as long as it did?
As for the appeal girl-girl action - *that* is a whole study in itself.
Which brings me to an perhaps telling anecdote: I was having a chat with some family and relatives, and we got on to TV shows. I started to tout Firefly, and one of the men, a family man, father of two children, 10 and 13, burst out and said "That show really pissed me off!" - and he went on to explain that he was offended that a early Friday evening show, when he's watching TV with his kids, should show a prostitute in a positive light and so on - he (ethnic Italian Roman Catholic) found it all morally offensive. (OTOH, I also work with a guy (Jewish) who condemns Buffy as offensive and satanic because of the occultism and witchcraft). I'm a half-assed Christian myself, but have no problems with all this stuff - it's just mindless entertainment, which mature people can handle. And (Lexx perhaps excepted), there usually is some redeeming factors.
But maybe his reaction is telling - maybe the amorality of the Firefly world did put some people off, and Fox got spooked. But that wouldn't explain Fastlane would it?
Anyway all this is by way of saying, I will miss Firefly, the way I regret not seeing how Crusade or Harsh Realm might have played out, but I hold little hope for the show to be saved by another network.
Meanwhile, we can retreat into the cozy world of the ST Federation, with Enterprise, et al, when the 'verse seems like a harsh realm, indeed.

I hope I shall never see the day when the Force of Right is deprived of the Right of Force.

LOSTANGEL

The amorality of Firefly would be an interesting theory except the amorality of the reality shows. Where are the morals in a show where you compete for a husband who HAPPENS to be a multimillionaire. Then because that angle has been done too many times, you lie to all of the contestants because he doesn't make enough money to support a family in real life.

To twist the knife a little bit (for instance if the woman falls in love with the guy, but he rejects her, the camera is inches in front of her face as she cries her eyes out.

Ask your relative what lessons he hopes his children get from those shows.
