... or "The Six Degrees of Joss Whedon."

I caught a sneak preview of Million Dollar Baby the other day, and I'm watching the credits and about ten names down, I see this name, "Benito Martinez." This is not a common name, plus my lil brother is a big rap fan and apparently Eminem was having this feud with a similarly-named guy. I'm thinking, is that the same guy? In a Clint Eastwood movie?

Maybe that's too much backstory, but the point is, I looked the guy up, and instead of a rap background, I see he appeared in "Our Mrs. Reynolds" as a character named 'Boss.' Personally, I don't know what that means, so I'm about to go watch the episode.... in babbling Quicksand style, here's my point:

Clint Eastwood was in "Million Dollar Baby" with Benito Martinez, who was on "Firefly."

This works for most any movie or TV show, like in the Kevin Bacon sense, but more fun, on account of it's Joss Whedon.

Like, say, a TV show. "The West Wing?" Stars Martin Sheen, Alison Janney, John Spencer... well, kids, John Spencer was on "L.A. Law" years ago, with Susan Ruttan... Susan Ruttan once did a guest spot on "Buffy" as a social worker.

I need to learn to work on using fewer paragraphs to explain these things, but yeah, if anyone else has a "Six Degrees" to pitch in, I think it'd be a fun game for our land of Geek-dom.

Yo.

Don't really have a six degrees to add... I am at work after all. Just thought I'd mention that Benito Martinez is Vic Mackey's foil of sorts as Capt. Aceveda on The Shield. I was happy to see him in Firefly, however briefly as one of the two fellows who were going to trap Serenity in their electrical net. They are, if memory serves, the only two fools in the series unlucky enough to be on the wrong end of Vera. Just thought I'd mention as I think he's a rather good actor, and deserved a shout out.

Well, we can connect Firefly with pretty much anyone in the Star Wars verse by connecting Jewel with Hayden Christianson from the show "Higher Ground".

Quicksand:

Don't know if this qualifies as a 'six degrees' item or not, but:

Jack N. Green = Oscar-nominated cinematographer for Eastwood's "Unforgiven" (among several other Eastwood projects) - and - cinematographer for Joss Whedon's "Serenity".

Really looking forward to a great looking BDM...

P.S.
Jack's 1992 work on Unforgiven 'lost' to Philippe Rousselot's "A River Runs Through It", another excellent piece of filmmaking.

Word.

I remembered another one that'd slipped my mind when I was writing:

"Desperate Housewives" has Firefly ties as well... if you watch the show, you'll remember the lone episode where we met Teri Hatcher's dumbass ex-husband..... as played by Richard Burgi, who played the bad cop in "The Message."

See, we got actors all over the place.

Try it, it's fun.

"The Princess Bride" --> Mandy Patinkin --> "Dead Like Me" --> Jewel Staite --> Firefly.

Yeah, I noticed that as well. But I figured there are more 24/FIREFLY links. I've noted them in my 24 thread, but I just realized that there is a new one, and that it's a high class, Oscar link.

Shoreh Agdashloo, Oscar nominee from HOUSE OF SAND AND FOG (IMHO one of the top five movies of 2003) is not only on this season of 24 that started last night, but she's also going to be in the BDM. I'm going to guess that her character's involved with Inara in some way (maybe her mother or a head Guild member).

But here are some quick links.

Richard Burgi= Allan York (Day 1)/bad cop in "The Message"
Daniel Bess= Rick (Day 1)/mudder that took bullet in "Jaynestown"
Gina Torres= Julia Miliken/Zoe
Gregg Henry= Jonathan Wallace, the last remaining Coral Snake (Day 2)/ Bourne "The Train Job"

Kirsten Dunst was in Wimbledon with Paul Bettany who was in A Knights Tale with Alan Tudyk, cast member of Firefly.

That was the only one off the top of my head.

Jewel was in the show Dead Like Me? I watched the first season when it was on Showtime, but I don't remember her... anyone care to jog my memory?

Another "Desperate Housewives" connection to the Whedonverse would be the little old lady with the snake in her head from BTVS: Doublemeat Palace. Her name is Pat Crawford Brown.

Actually the most dangerous three movies to make your connections from are

Gina Torres - Matrix Revolutions
Alan Tudyk - Dodgeball
Nathan Fillion - Blast from the past

Allow me to demonstrate just how lethal

Bevis & Butthead-Airheads-Brendan Frasier
Brendan Frasier-BlastFrom the Past-Nathan Fillion!

(blows away the smoke from the barrel of his gun)

you can get almost anywhere.

Plus if you use all the Cameos in Pauly Shore is Dead (a movie that is so wrong) you can connect almost anybody.

I don't remember the episode name. It was after Daisy joined up with them. The record shop where Mason is hitting on all the women. Jewel works there, she's really punked out. Finds the post-it and the rest is broom closet history.

I think I counted about 30 actors from firefly on various incarnations of CSI... Summer, Melinda Clarke & Gina notably on the Vegas show (including Gina tonight Jan 10th, on Spike), Adam & Sean on CSI: Miami... and various guest stars, too...

Connect Firefly to the new Battlestar Galactica:

Jewel Staite to Kandyse McClure (another of her Higher Ground co-stars).

Kandyse is Petty Officer Dualla (the bridge officer)

You can then use Battlestar Galactica to connect back to Star Trek.

Jewel to Kandyse
Kandyse to Richard Hatch (the original Apollo and soon-to-be guest star on the new Battlestar Galactica)

Richard Hatch to Dirk Benedict (the original Battlestar)

Dirk Benedict to Dwight Schulze (A-Team)

Dwight was Ensign/Lieutenant Barclay in Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Voyager

Okay. Not sure if this is the shortest.

Highlander: Sean Connery
The Russia House: Michelle Pfeiffer
Batman Returns: Andrew Bryniarski (Crow from TTJ)
Firefly

IMDB is a dangerous thing .

On a related note... Is the Firefly 'Verse all in Tommy Westphall's mind?!? Once you make the Law and Order connection it all falls into place . Sorry, couldn't resist bringing it back to a St. Elsewhere page I saw a while ago:

* editted to add: If you can get to Gene Hackman that just opens up a whole can of worms.

I'm not sure that counts, because Clinton didn't act in the movie "Contact"--it was just a clip from a press conference, and in fact, the Clinton camp made a stink about the clips being used in the film.

However:
Bill Clinton, "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" (with Jon Stewart)
Jon Stewart, "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back" (with Eliza Dushku)
Eliza Dushku, "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" (with Nathan Fillion)
and of course Nathan Fillion, "Firefly/Serenity"

Just in case archival footage ins't allowed in this game.

Alan Tudyk was in "I Robot" with Will Smith, that can go several directions.

Kaylee: Wash, tell me I'm pretty
Wash: Were I unwed I would take you in a manly fashion
Kaylee: 'Cause I'm pretty?

I'm smart enough to know what "TNG" stands for, but too dumb to translate "TSS." Help me out?

a) Clinton was IN "Contact," whether or not he actually worked on the set, met the actors, etc. In this way you could link, say, Dennis Quaid through Topher Grace via "Traffic" (no scenes together) instead of needing "In Good Company" (starting 1/14 at a theater near you).

b) Yes, you COULD play the game just with actors who have appeared in scenes together, but why make life difficult?

c) No one's done this yet, but it kinda sews the whole thing up:

Kevin Bacon --> "JFK" (also with Vincent D'Onofrio)

Vincent D'Onofrio --> "Full Metal Jacket" (also with Adam Baldwin).

See, we ARE the center of the universe......

TSS = The Screen Savers
Alan did an interview when Kevin was still around all the time. These days, Kevin is regulated to a cubby or a location shot. At least they moved Sarah to the desk and sat ShiLan in the corner.

*smirk* Yeah, see, you WATCHED that scene, and had no idea it was her. It took me a full 10-15 seconds to recognize her, and then I literally fell off my couch. "Holy ... is that...????"

I posted an entire note about it here the next day, I was traumatized. I still can barely talk about it.
