My bestest buddy bought me the book containing the first six issues of Astonishing X-Men written by Joss.

Gotta say, worth picking up if you haven't read it yet. I'm a little lost, cuz it's not a NEW series, it picks up mid-stream, but pretty cool nonetheless.

As a rabid X-Men fan, I was a bit hesitant when I heard that Joss Whedon was going to be delving into that genre. I mean, it's insanely complicated already, and we all know how Joss likes to shake things up even more. Still, being an All-Things-Whedon whore, I picked it up and was more than pleasantly surprised. Sure, things are different, but all in all it's shaping up to be a great series.

Besides, Joss Whedon + X-Men = Some never before discovered level of Nirvana.

If you're a rabid X-men fan maybe you can tell me what the sequence of books is that lead up to the beginning of Joss's Astonishing?

I am currently reading the reprints of New X-men and X-treme X-men that are being published here in Britain. We're still only twelve issues into Grant Morrison's run so it will be a while before we get to Joss Whedon's Astonishing X-men. can't wait though.

Oh man, Grounded... There are about a zillion x-books that lead up to Astonishing.

The comic itself is part of the "Marvel: Reload"...a.k.a. changing things in the X-Universe (see "Age of Apocalypse", the relaunch of Uncanny, etc. etc.)

Basically what happened is that they released some old titles under new names and the brand new title, Astonishing X-Men. New X-Men dropped the “New,” and New Mutants turning into New X-Men: Academy X.

To get a feel for the jumping off point of Astonishing, you would probably do well to check out:

- New X-Men [Morrison] (Sometimes called X-Men Series 2...start at around issue 114, the Morrison stuff)
- Some of the more recent Uncanny X-Men
- And even Ultimate X-Men (although it strays from the "norm" a bit by making them teens)

If you a complete newcomer to the X-Universe, it may be a teeeeensy bit more complicated.

Start with Uncanny Xmen. This is the title that started it all. Quite a few of Joss' quotes come from way back. Also a couple of mini series. Wolverine & Kitty Pryde. This title has been one of my favorites for the last couple of decades now. Joss' run has been like coming home again.
A good homecoming caus not all homecomings are good. He brings a fealling that is good to be back. Although I never left. Give Astonishing a try, If you like it look for back issues.
