Hey there. Its Loni Peristere, the VFX sup on "Serenity". I noticed a news posting about our involvement in "A Sound of Thunder", and I wanted to clear that up a bit, as Zoic did very little on this film. We cleaned up some high rez creature models early in production, and that is it. The effects in "A Sound of Thunder" were done by other companies.

"Serenity's" team of artists are an extraordinary group of people whose work is the best in the industry. Joining our team from the series, who are leading the show, are many lead R&D and lighting TD's from ESC. So we have a whole lot of fun prepped for you guys by those who helped define the look of the "The Matrix". Zoic's Visual Effects supervisor, Randy Goux, was the CG Supervisor for the cave troll sequence in "Lord of the rings" and the siege in "Matrix Revolutions". Rest assured the good ship "Serenity" is flying true at Zoic. We really can't wait to share.

Prior to "Serenity", Zoic was credited on "The Day after Tomorrow", Spiderman 2", and "Van Helsing".

All the Best,

Loni

With those credits, and what Zoic did on Firefly itself, I have no doubts that the movie will be full of Thrilling Zoics.

The combined effort going into this film is great, and I chose to believe that all involved in the film, as Zoic, are completely devoted to making it a Big Damn Movie.

Sincerly can't wait til the Big Damn Movie.

Loni:

'Twas I that found the references to Zoic's involvement in 'TSoT'. Didn't mean to implicate y'all in the crime... You are (sorta) saying it's gonna be a crime, right? Don't answer that. Strictly rhetorical.

Might I ask if Zoic are also involved -- in more than a passing way -- with the Battlestar Galactica series? As with 'TSoT', Ms. Kristen Branan is listed as the Visual Effects "head of production". Mark Lipsmeyer, tracker/matchmover from Zoic is also credited. However, I watched the 'inside scoop' for BSG prior to last night's episode(s), and the lead graphic/visual effects guy they interviewed didn't appear to be one of yours, based strictly upon my recall of the 14 'biological intelligences' listed on the Zoic site, 'People' section.

Of course, y'all are pretty busy these days, n'est-ce pas? We Browncoats have our own priorities, when it comes to where your best efforts are going... I also assume that the People section of the website is not all-inclusive.

I was very impressed with Zoic's site. Y'all certainly don't scrimp on the tidbits. Hopefully, enough of the Faithful read that part of my post and hied on over there to scope out your wares.

Mr. Peristere and his cohorts have done some truly beautiful and innovative work. The HP 'picture frame' commercials: zounds! They even provide an 'executive summary' of how they did it. ...And if you can understand it, you should probably apply for a job with Zoic.

Thank you for posting, Loni, and for clarifying my misinterpretation of the information. (Damn! I really wanted to see that VTOL aircraft, too!) It's great when one of the creative artists of the greatest TV sci-fi series ever aired shows up and shares his thoughts with us. Please, don't be a stranger.

Respectfully,

zoid

P.S.
For the BSG-curious, I also believe the rumor that some of Firefly's directors are working on the new Galactica series is true. Marita Grabiak (Jaynestown) and Allan Kroeker (Ariel) are credited on IMDB as directors for the series. They are also both credited for "Wonderfalls" episodes (love ya', Tim), among other works.

Thrilling Zoics

I'm adding that to my vocabulary!

zoics
Function: noun
1: digitally constructed or enhanced heroics
2: astoundingly captivating special effects created by amazingly talented people, especially in the face of difficulty

BSG. Mr. Lee Stringer, Mark Shimer, Dustin Adair, Sean Jackson, Patti Gannon, and Adam(mojo) Liebowitz, were all on BSG for this season. BSG's supervisor Gary Hutzel worked hand in hand with this team and another Canadian team called Atmosphere to produce some very good work. The first season has been complete since December, and the BSG team at Zoic has been absorbed on "Serenity" to help final the show.

Yes. BSG has the luxury of Marita and Alan. Two of my personal favorites. I'm hoping they give David Solomon a call. Michael Rhymer, David Eick, and Ron Moore are doing good work on the series, and we are looking forward to season 2.

Loni:

Thanks for the info. I now feel much better about liking BSG. If we can't get Firefly back in an episodic format (sorry, but it had to be said), at least we can enjoy a show that's adult and character-driven. When several of the actors and other principals of BSG said 'character-driven' last night in interviews, I don't mind telling you I had a deep pang of regret for the lost beauty of Firefly.

If nothing else, Firefly showed the way for Battlestar Galactica. I predict it will be a great success, due in no small part to the contributions of former Mutant Enemy protégés and partners.

I may be a little strange (no, really), but I can remember searching credits for 'Industrial Lights and Magic', as an indicator of quality. A new ILM movie was something to get excited about. The same is now true of Zoic. Please let us know, when you are allowed to, of any new productions your team undertakes.

...and you got 'lissa, spwhore' (space whore) to delurk from her deep cover. Nice shot.

Respectfully,

zoid

P.S.
It may be totally irrational, but I hate F*x. That it was a 'strictly business' decision, rankles all the more. I hope "Serenity" (and the sequels, "Shadow" and "Firefly") and BSG haunt them 'til the day they die, penniless in a rat-infested sewer. (Nota Bene: And may the rats have communicable herpes.)

You guys ROCK, it's good to know the higher-ups are stopping by the all-important fan-sites.

Some nice work on Spider-Man 2, there, folks. Can't wait to see your next big breakthroughs.... no matter what the reviews say, the siege in "Matrix Revolutions" was AWESOME... you rock my world.

XOXO

Thanks for the clarification, Loni -- looking forward to some Thrilling Zoics myownself!

Btw, are the zooms and pans in the BSG effects done differently than they were on Firefly? Somehow I feel like the ones on BSG are more jarring...

Jayne, your mouth is talkin. Might want to look into that.

Loni,
I see that you mention Lee Stringer, is he still working with zoic? I ask, because I have not seen his name on the zoic site as of late.

I was also curious as to how many folks there used to work at Foundation Imaging {they made the fantastic "Roughnecks: Starship Trooper Chronicals and the MASSIVE changes for "Star Trek the Motion Picture" - just in case the public dinna know.}

If Lee is still around, and you see him - could you tell him Ron Freeze, late of SF Quartermaster, says "Hello"!

Thanks!

Lee Stringer is here and on Serenity. The company has grown significantly in the last nine months and the web has fewer people on it as a result. Too many supervisors to publish on the Web. Zoic only includes senior management at this time.

Lee was the CG supervisor for Zoic on the Galactica series. But just last week, he finished Serenity's new self lighting kit. She looks great.

Thank you very much Loni!

Oh, btw: if Lee doesn't remember me - pop him one on the arm and say "InCon Huckster Room". If that doesn't refresh his memory core - I suppoz I'll have to come over to zoic and 'thrash' him myself.

I have finally seen the first episodes of BSG: "33" and "Water" - I am speechless! You folks have outdone yourselves. It is making my hunger to see "Serenity" nigh unbearable.

Did zoic develop a new spatial physics processing for the ship scenes? I was just wondering because, the inertia and arc of vessels looks even better than from the original miniseries of BSG or "Firefly".

Thanks again for the great info and keep up the Excellent work!!!
