This was on the SciFiWire:

Krumholtz Logs On Serenity
David Krumholtz, who plays a key role in the upcoming SF movie Serenity, told SCI FI Wire that his character is called "Mr. Universe." "All I can say is that I do play a man who lives on a satellite moon, … and I have transmitted to me all the satellite feeds from all over the whole universe, every planet," Krumholtz said in an interview while promoting his upcoming CBS TV series, Numb3rs, at the network's winter press tour in Hollywood. "So … I'm a man with a lot of information that they need. ... I'm talking on a screen to the whole crew of the ship."
Krumholtz, who may be best known for playing Barry Schweiber in TV's Freak and Geeks, added that his character did not appear in the canceled Fox TV series Firefly, on which the Universal Pictures movie is based. "They were really sweet with me" for the two days Krumholtz shot his scenes, he said of the regular cast, led by Nathan Fillion. "It's great. I'm happy for them. They're a great group of actors. They really deserve it. The show was canceled abruptly and too early." Serenity opens Sept. 30. Universal is owned by NBC Universal, which also owns SCIFI.COM.

Cool stuff!

Not a problem. I remember hearing about this on a script summary that someone posted a long time ago, and I remember people thinking that it was probably false, because it didn't seem like Joss Weadon's idea or style.

So he only shows up on the small com-screen of Serenity?

I do enjoy the idea, because information is power. And it seems like this Mr. Universe is a guy with some power.

I don't recognize the actor though, is he any good? Seeing as he is on a project directed by Whedon I would assume so, but has anybody got opinions?

Sincerly can't wait till the Big Damn Movie's released.

David Krumholtz, on IMDB: http://tinyurl.com/5plmg .

First place I saw him was on "Life With Mikey", movie, starring Michael J. Fox as a former child star turned children's talent agent. Krumholtz plays an annoying preteen womanizing egomaniac. Ha-ha. For my taste, he's a little too much 'human fly' for enjoyment.

Actually, I've always assumed he's one of those guys who's secretly related to Someone Big (you know, like Nicholas Cage, née Coppola), because I can't figure out how he's got a career in movies otherwise. I just hope he isn't the same character he's portrayed in every other frame of film he's shot, which would apparently be named 'Just Being Himself'. I don't like that character, and don't particularly want to see him in Serenity. It would ruin that part of the film for me. Hopefully, JW's got him acting in the BDM.

But, the guy's not hard to find, if you want to check out his work. He's got a major role in "The Taming of the Shrew", er, "10 Things I Hate About You", wherein he plays the guy who loves Julia Stiles, but she's a handful. So, he gets Heath Ledger to tame her for him; but Heath and Julia fall in love, so he winds up back with his old 'girlfriend', Rosie something-or-other. That guy...

A good flick, overall, but best moment is the credits with girl-group Letters to Cleo performing Cheap Trick's "I Want You To Want Me" on the roof of the school. Good story, though. The arc reminds me a little of JW...

Skeptically,

Warning: spoiler from the script we saw some time ago that this agrees with:

Select to view spoiler:

Just think, if this is true, then we'll ALSO get to see a sex-robot, since that's what the script mentioned Mr. Universe having! Sigh...do not like this plot concept...

Trust in the Joss...if he does this, it'll come out good...

Well, if we do see him on a small view screen, perhaps we won't see her.

SCHIZORABBIT

I remember him from Ang Lee's The Ice Storm, where he plays Tobey Maguire's friend (Tobey playing the more insecure, goofy intellectual guy to Krumholtz's more secure but obnoxious buddy)who sort of preempts or sabotages Maguire's attempts to hook up with the Katie Holme's character. The movie was great overall (a definite recommendation for those who haven't seen it), and I remember Krumholtz believably playing an annoyingly cocky guy.

UNCHARTEDOUTLAW

I'm starting to wonder if this type of character is getting a tad archetypeal (I know, I spelled that wrong). I mean, O'Brien in 1984, The Architect in The Matrix, and now this?

I have no knowledge of 1984,but I do see the connection between the Architect in the Matrix and our very own Mr. Universe.

Both these characters play on the idea that "Information is power", which is a very valid idea in today's society. Thus I find that it is a good idea for a story, if implemented correctly in a fitting one.

The Architect was bad in the Matrix 2 and 3, because the movies were bad. I'm not going to bash these movies now, even though I want to.

Mr. Universe, on the other hand, I believe will be implemented correctly in a fitting story, because Serenity is a completely different story from The Matrix story.

Joss will make the idea "Mr. Universe" work, and I have no doubt that the actor will give us what Joss means is correct for this character.

Sincerly can't wait till the Big Damn Movie's released.

QUIETUDE

Now the problem with stories is that they always have to be in a limited span. Cause if you go to far you will lose the understanding of the audience or their patience. Just look at the Matrix 2 and 3. So if you are going to limit what you can write about, then it is always best to go with some standard types, ie. Badger and this Mr. Universe (I wonder if he is the Governor of California as well). I would guess this type of character is easy to understand even if the idea of someone having links to who knows how many planets seems a little far-fetched, but hey, its just two minutes in the movie. It wouldn't be the first time Joss has used something or someone who has all the answers, just look at how much stuff they found on the computer in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. If I would hazard a guess, Joss reached a point in his story where there were no leads as to where the Serenity crew needed to head or he just wanted to throw in something different.

Whatever the cause I sure it was a good idea.
