Hello all. I had a thought (a rare and dangerous occurrence): It would be cool to have the opening guitar flourish at the beginning of the "Ballad of Serenity" as a windoze startup sound, and the fiddle coda at the end for a shut-down sound.

Lacking the technology and expertise to accomplish this on my own, let me propose a way to do this for anyone not so limited: The problem is with the decay of the last guitar note before Sonny starts a-singin'; it would chop off rather jarringly unless somehow stretched and faded. Does anyone know how this might be done? If so, is anone set up to post the sound somewhere for general Browncoat consumption (having nothing whatsoever to do with tuberculosis ["TB or not TB, that is the congestion" --Woody Allen])?

The closing coda would not be as much of a problem to edit, as the attack of the fiddle note is pretty uncluttered, and could probably be excised without undue fuss.

Yadda-yadda... Any takers?

Keep flyin'!

dood...this would be cool but I have no clue how to do anything like that. I do have those desktop themes though with the whole theme as a shutdown and Mal's intro on startup. shhhh...dont tell anyone i made themes! (hehe right! pass it on!)

let me know if you're interested in those.

Hey dood;

I thought about using the whole theme, but, considering how often I have to re-boot this ant-hill called windoze, I would run a serious risk of becoming sick of that wonderful piece of music, which would be wholly unacceptable. Not to mention the time involved with hearing the whole theme (nearly a minute) would slow down even further the already-interminable boot sequence.

So, the search continues.

Actually, I do have some VERY audio-savvy friends who might be able to accomplish this (got links to the WAVs of the beginning and end themes?). If they can do this, I will be sure to post them...that is, unless some industrious Browncoats beat me to it

I made a couple for my own personal use (from the .mp3s of the Opening Title and End Titles). Might not be exactly what you wanted, but thought I'd share anyway.

With credit given to that guy up there (pointing up)I just cut up and mixed up a few short sound wavs for e-mail & commands using sound recorder, but I'm not sure how to post them up here. Not to mention I'm on a company server. But it was really fairly easy. Shiny

a bit off topic, but does anybody have the ability to pull wavs from video. Would love some shiny wavs from ,war stories, trash, & objects in space? or Serenity 1&2 for that matter

Any brave takers?

Does anyone want entire audio files? I made wav's of the entire eps. About 40-50 MB each. I gave them to Maniac so he could listen as he types all night at work. Email info@strangefinger.com or maniac@magicbishop.com and one of us can help you. If you have Windows Messenger, it would help if you included your username in the email. Have a nice day.

Okay, boredom, stubbornness, insomnia, and Beamish Stout have combined to prompt me to download the trial version of a program called "Ace of WAV" which will enable me to edit WAV sounds, once I figure out how to use its more advanced features. I have already used it to edit out all but the last fiddle riff from the end credits (pretty kool; it gives you a graph of the wave form for the sound, you click to set a beginning and end point, and clip the file where you wish), and set it as my shutdown sound.

The next project will be to isolate the guitar riff from the very start of the end credits for my startup sound. This one will be a bit more difficult, as I have to stretch the last guitar note, then fade that stretch, so it doesn't just clip out abruptly and sound schlocky. Once I get these down, I will be happy to email them to anyone who is set up to post them for general consumption (there's that word again!).

More generally, this program should enable me to isolate itty-bitty bits of sound and create a whole Firefly theme for Windows (e.g., "Da-wubba-who?" for the "question" sound, assorted Mandarin blue streaks for "critical stop" and other nastiness, etc.). I'll keep y'all posted on these projects. Any sources of random FF sounds (aside from WAVsite.com, which I know about) would be welcome.

Slightly off-topic, but incidentally, I think the animation of firefly with the burning/flaring outline at the end of the shows makes a great wallpaper and/or screensaver.

Actually, unless you could get it to move around the screen, it would make an atrocious screen saver, as it would burn itself into the screen in fairly short order. Same would go for it as a wallpaper. Cool as it would be to look at, it would take a toll on your monitor(as I learned when I used SETI at home's screen "saver." I still see ghosts of the fool thing on my screen, even though I discontinued it well over a year ago!).

Just a word to the wise from the unwise.

Say 'Tash, do you have WAVs of the opening and ending themes? I was able to find the end theme, but only in MP3, which I can't edit with the program I have (and I lack the initiative to find, download, and learn another...there's only so far the Beamish Stout will get me!).

I managed to do a passable job editing the fiddle coda from the snippet of the end theme which was posted above, smoothing the attack with a quick fade, so that it doesn't just leap out of nowhere in a jarring fashion. Will be happy to send along to anyone who's interested.

If you've got it, you can find my e-mail addy in my profile.

Thanks and keep flyin'!

I've been feeling majorly full of Firefly love and bitterness, plus I'm a media geek, so I've been making sound clips. You can find them in the media section of my site ( http://dearone.net). Right now I've got the theme in mp3 format, plus random sounds from Our Mrs. Reynolds, Safe and Ariel. Just kind of working my way through as the mood strikes, and yep, I'll take requests -- email me or drop a comment via the site (only ep I don't have on SVCD is The Train Job, so can't clip from that one right now). If you haven't gotten the startup/shutdown sounds you wanted yet, feel free to contact me. I can use SoundForge to pull small sequences, extend notes, etc.

You are a shiny one. I'm wanting wavs for war stories, trash, & serenity 1&2, and objects. The whole, "My sister's a ship" thing.

I'm wanting to make a CD of music inspired by Firefly with sound clip intro's. Once I get it done I'll post the song list with appropriate wav text

Very shiny indeed! Two requests immediately come to mind: The first is, of course, the guitar intro (pref. in WAV format, if possible) from the end theme, sliced into a nice 5-ish-second flourish-and-fade ("doo-doo-doom, doo-doo-doom-DOOOooommm..." is the correct spelling, I believe), ripe for a startup sound (I tend to like short startup/shutdown sounds, since one has to re-boot so many times in windoze).

The second which leaps to mind is a choice Mal "Hunh" for the "question" or "exclamation" sound.

One might then space monkey around with such things as short and long strings of Mandarin profanity, and suchlike. I hope you have tne bandwidth for the onslaught of WAV-hungry Browncoats which would likely ensue!

I'm a theatrical sound designer by trade. I don't have a lot of the episodes on tape, and the ones I do aren't of the best quality, but I can pull sounds and clean them up with the stuff I have in my studio if anyone wants to get me good quality source files

Is this the guitar idea you were looking for?

http://dearone.net/ffguitar.wav

I've done some stuff to reduce file size (not as much compression as I usually do with the verbal clips, though), but if that's not the sound quality you were hoping for, let me know.

Yes, indeed, this is precisely the clip I'd wanted, and you tweaked/faded it precisely as I'd visualized. And, furthermore, you rock. Multitudinous thanks!

Actually, there was another clip I thought might be lovely: do you remember that mournful, haunting little theme at the end of Bushwhacked, where the Alliance ship is scuttling the derelict freighter? Tugs at the heart, don't it?

Anyway, thanks again!!

Coolness -- glad that was what you were after! I'll swing by again when I have a chance to rip an appropriate Mal "huh" (I did a music vid with the scene from Serenity where he discovers River hidden away, so I know where to go for that sound!) and root around for the clip from Bushwhacked. And for anyone who's interested, I'll continue to gradually add to the episode dialogue clips...I keep telling myself to wait for the DVDs for the ultimate source quality, but since I compress the audio snippets quite a bit, I guess it's no big...plus I just don't want to wait

Just thought I'd pop in with a quick suggestion since I'm bored out of my mind:

You can use WinAmp to convert mp3s to wav files. Of course, they will be roughly ten times the original size.

Talk about melancholy, the quiet guitar strum at the end of jaynestown. Probabaly one of the most thought provoking moments in the whole series. The hero of canton reprise I call it. Would make a nice quiet shutdown.

Thanks, Chasa -- these are shiny. Btw, the 'bigdamnheroes.wav' files seems to cut off slightly late -- it seems to include the beginning of Mal's next sentence after "ain't we just..."

Also, some of my ideas about sounds for Windows events:

Asterisk: "Huh." (MAL, from 'Serenity')
Close program: STILLSHINY's riff_4.wav (made from the end of SAKRYSTA's Firefly_Main_Title_Theme.wav -- guitar riff when Serenity flies off at the beginning of 'The Train Job')
Critical stop: (deadly) "I don't give half a hump if you're innocent or not." (BOOK from 'Objects in Space')
Default beep: (all cool) "Bwaa." (MAL, from 'Heart of Gold')
Exclamation: "C'mon, Wash, you dumbass, dodge 'em!" (JAYNE, from 'Serenity')
Exit windows: SAKRYSTA's Firefly_End_Credits.wav (last violin measures from the end theme)
New mail notification: "I got post?" (JAYNE, from 'The Message')
Question: "I need that in Captain Dummy-Talk, Kaylee." (MAL, from 'Out of Gas')
Program error: "Don't figure the percentage in that." (JAYNE, from 'The Message')
Start windows: CHASA's ffguitar.wav (from NOOCYTE's request of the guitar intro from the end theme)

If anyone could supply any of these clips, it would be much appreciated!!!

Hmmm, that's odd. I just listened on both of my computers and don't hear anything except the fiddle background music on the fade after "just." But I'll take a closer look with headphones after work and if it's not a neat fade, I'll fix!
