FIREFLYPASSENGER

I agree promotion is key. If we organize and put our money where our heart is, why can't we place ads in local newspapers? The main idea is to create awareness of Firefly and the mis-treatment of the show ie: time slot, not enough promotion by Fox and the order of the episodes. We can also create awareness of the efforts to keep the shows by the fans. The Browncoat drive, the DVD interest in the series as well as our desire to keep Firefly going and Joss's commitment to find Firefly a home.
I sincerely believe we are on the brink of something great. If only Firefly gets more time.

May Serenity keep flying.

LOSTANGEL

All hail Jeremy! I was gonna do a Moses and clay tablets comparison, but it sounded too silly for even me.

Jeremy dude, keep us in mind, and maybe we can start a new wave of the future!

Maybe someone mentioned this already, but it's 2 mil per episode. If people can get that much together i think they would make one, but it would probably have to be the reverse of pay per view, pay on faith that you will view, or perhaps dontate the first episodes worth of money, and pay for each after that. So that way each episode payed for the next

Idealistically speaking, think we could sell copies of the currently shown eps for that? If we sold the DVDs, then put the unaired eps on a pay-per-view, that together might make enough money.

TRAGICSTORY

Just a quick message about PBS. It would be a good idea except for the fact that they are all run locally. I know this because I used to watch Red Dwarf but when I moved I was told my new local PBS station that they did not have the money to buy rights to show it.

The price tag for Red Dwarf is 400,000 USD per season shown just to give you an idea. And that show is LOW BUDGET.

So FF on PBS would be great, but unrealistic, unless you live in a real city where it is actually funded. (Can you guess who now lives in the redneck hickville?)

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

I wouldn't be looking at PBS as a permanent home for FF, but airing it there would create interest in a DVD.

Here's my thinking. I'd have to get some REAL numbers and throw them in later.

Assuming that DVD is the way to distribute FF, and that producing FF costs 2 million per episode. each DVD episode has to support at least one more episode, and hopefully more in order to generate some cushion.

If
(1) FF were to be distributed as a 3-episode DVD (w/ extras AND scenes from the next DVD!) and
(2) sold for $20 per,
(3) and distributed thru Amazon.com or similar

then subtract fomr each DVD
(1) $6 for typical shipping
(2) $1 for DVD burning
(3) $1 to amazon.com

(remember these are just example values, not researched numbers)

that means that each DVD would net $12 to ME, or $4 per episode. In order to reach the break-even point, each 3-ep DVD would HAVE to sell 500,000 copies. There should be mnore sales because you need to factor in things like advertising and profit. ME needs some cushion so they aren't running from production to production.

In order to sell 500,000 you need ADVERTISING. Isn't that where we all claim that Fox failed? It would be ironic if the effort to save FF made the same mistake. And, we should look into areas that wold be missed by the normal FOX audience.

Just thinking out loud here, what if the previously aired FF eps were aired on PBS before a DVD release? If the first DVD was part of a PBS fund-drive giveaway?

What about an inet campaign? As I mentioned before, a best script, best fanfic, best animation contest? Local paper advertising? INTERNATIONAL advertising? (Gotta cast the broadest possible net.) Even TV advertising (altho it is VERY expensive).

Frankly, this seems all very do-able since I have confidence in "the product".

HORNSWOGGLE

I think everyone who ever saw the show would agree. What I can't seem to understand is if one can go to newdvd.cc and get the star wars episode one, two,& three on DVD why can't I get even the first Firefly episode. I just can't see why someone hasn't copied the show onto cd's even.
