I've never been to a convention of any kind before (even though I've been a fan of shows that have conventions for quite a long time, Buffy, Star Trek, etc.). However, I was kind of considering buying a ticket to the Serenity Starfury event in Heathrow at the end of April. Thing is, I'm aprehensive about spending so much money when I really don't know what to expect. Sure, they've got great guests, but what else happens? Is it all just discussion panels and then a party in the evening? I just wondered if someone could elaborate a bit, the website is a bit vague.

Also, would it be okay to go on my own? I don't really think any of my friends are obsessive enough about the show to want to go to a three day Serenity event. I'm quite shy and young (I'm 20, but people tell me I look 15!), would be easy enough to make friends?

America loves a winner!

I know of what you speak - sorta. I attended my 1st fan convention of any sort just last Sept. Here in Atlanta, we have DragonCon, which has been running for about 18 (?) yrs. I too am a fan, but never considered myself the 'convention type'. I probably still don't, but that's not the point. I had a blast. Of course, DC is huge, and there's literally something for everyone there. My favorite things were by far, going to the panals and seeing our BDHs. Attending DC were Nathan, Adam and Jewel. Those folks are just fantastic. I can't put it any other way.

I'm not up to speed as to what's going on at Starfury, but if there's a chance to meet any of our BDHs, then I say do it!

" They don't like it when you shoot at 'em. I worked that out myself. "

PHOEBE

Hey there,

Well, I went to the Starfury: Fusion convention last May, so I can tell you what happened there. Basically, the entire hotel was just full of people who watched the shows involved, and the sci-fi scene in general. There was a massive bar room where you could wander around and chat. A big hall where you could listen to the guest talks and ask questions and such. Also a massive area to buy things. Little events going on all the time, signings, photo sessions, plus planning for the fancy dress parties and so on. Everyone was very friendly, even the shy ones amongst us (like me!) can start chatting to people in a queue and so on!

COSMICFUGITIVE

Hey FLUGUFRELSARINN,

I went to a Starfury event at the Thistle Hotel two years ago. It was my first con and I didn't know what to expect.

Sean Harry (the organiser) knows how to put together a great event. It was the best weekend I ever had!

(I also went to an Alias con last summer and enjoyed it even more because I knew what to expect.)

The event will be held in the convention centre next to the hotel. Only attendees are allowed in there over the weekend.

The guest talks will start in the morning and run in intervals into mid afternoon. (They last about an hour.)

(There will be episode screenings and the opportunity to get autographs/photos between guest talks.)

Also, bring a camera and LOTS of film! You're allowed to take pictures for the first few minutes of the guest talks.

You're also allowed to step up to the microphone(Or someone will pass one to you.) and ask the guests a question.

A disco will be held in the evening and the guests usually hang out there too! (At their own discretion.)Although you have to respect their wishes and don' ask for autographs, photos or crowd them.

A 'dealer's' room might also be set up to give you the opportunity to buy all kinds of sci-fi merchandise.

I'm not sure if there will be a fancy dress contest but if there is, it'll be crazy fun! The guests interact with the contestants and also judge their outfits.

There's a lot to do over the weekend. Everything's on a timetable so you're never bored.

The autograph and photo sessions will be announced in 'batches'. How quickly you get an autograph/photo depends on your ticket number.

There's also a chance to talk to the guests briefly during the autograph and photo sessions.

You can also get one personal item signed by the guests!

Everyone usually gets an autograph, but even if you don't the organisers will do everything to get you one.

Making friends is easy at a convention. I still keep in contact with those I met. There's always an opportunity to chat with people while waiting in queues or hanging out at the bar.

The guests sometimes mingle with the crowd so there's an opportunity to see or talk to them too.

Hi.
I'm kind of in the same situation. Serenity will be my first con and i've only ever been to signing events before, so don't know really what to expect.

I'm also going by myself as my friends aren't real big fans of genre shows. I'm a little nervous but from what i've seen and read everyone at these cons are really nice and friendly so it should be a fun weekend.

Flug:

I'm flying out for this Starfury Serenity Con with my daughter. Lots of information on Phoebe's thread, http://fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=2&t=7147

Hope to see you there!
We've got tickets and we're so psyched, I practically want to go into suspended animation till April.

Hi Flug,

First of all, please don't worry about being on y our own. Everyone at Serenity is there because of one reason - they love Firefly! There will be plenty of people to chat with during the weekend, you won't be on your own for long.

As far as the event itself is concerned, there are guest talks during the day, running from about 10.00 am till about 4.00 pm. There are photo sessions in the morning, you buy your ticket for the photo sessions when you register for the event, they're not sold in order of registration number. Can't tell you the price at the moment, it normally is £10 per actor, but there are also usually group photos, but I don't know the cost at the moment. There are autograph sessions in the afternoon, where normally you can get one free item per actor, but it has to be an official item, i.e. not downloaded from the net.

At the Q & A's, you get to ask the actors questions, I won't say any more about what happens at the Q & A's, but let's just say that they can get interesting! In the evening there are discos on all three nights, a fancy dress competition on the Saturday, and closing ceremony on the Sunday which again can get quite interesting (as anyone who was at the last Starfury convention can verify). There are also screenings of episodes when there are any gaps in the programme.

Let's put it this way - you won't be bored, there's something going on all weekend.

Do get a ticket - you won't regret it!
