...When reading through your post I was thinking that a hundred years from now everything will be recorded so nothing will be 'lost'. Those moments will all be like hail stones in rain... floating away but remaining for a time until they too melt away...

The question is: Who will care? Who will replay those recordings with such attention to the details that their own lives are diminished? Would you really want some distant descendant to savor the moments of your life, to the detriment of their own experiences? More likely, if everything does eventually get recorded, it will sit in some dusty archive until the media it's recorded on rots to dust (or until it becomes evidence in your trial).

Here's another thought by another great man (my father-in-law): Once people come to the realization that their lives are not going to be exceptional, that they will live and die in obscurity, then they can truly begin to enjoy their lives.

Oh, yeah, it may not be true for everyone. But for the vast majority of people -- regardless how hard they strive to make their mark on History -- life is humdrum and workaday and unexceptional. God willing, your life doesn't get exciting.

Part of our obsession with pop culture is a growing ignorance of the beauty of simply being. Until being ceases. Even though 99.999% of us are simply droplets in the great river of humanity, we still have an abiding sense of deep personal meaning; it's my world, everyone else is just living in it. That's where greed and selfishness (and a lot of other dark attributes) come from.

But the sooner we can accept that we're not going to be "millionaires, and movie gods, and rock stars", the faster we can come to the realization that we're ordinary, we're sufficient for the world, and that's all we have to be. We can get on with enjoying our lives and helping where we can, because we're not so focused on ourselves anymore.

Pseudo-Intellectually (per T.S. Eliot, the snob!),

P.S.
Name the movie from which the excerpted 'rock stars' quote comes. It's one of my very favorite movies, if for no other reason than it scares the living bejeezus out of 'real world' BlueSun types. I also believe it's the reference from whence Mal's "terrifying space monkeys" comes. No wonder F*x cancelled Firefly: Some thoughts cannot be allowed to propagate.

I hate that movie. Seriously, loathe it. Anyone who wants to follow the leadership of someone with serious mental health problems who almost gets his own balls cut off needs help. Maybe a therapy group...

Plus, you know, he gets both himself and his girlfriend killed so...

SimonWho:

Take it easy! It's only a movie. I absolutely love allegorical tales. It's the ideas that matter, not the details. If the main character had been a charismatic figure, wanting to overthrow the religious establishment of the day and, just for instance, throw all the money-changers out of the places of worship: How would you have felt about the movie then?

Or is it just the idea of radical change that's so scary?

I, for one, don't mind the mental picture of the TRW stockholders' meeting in the wake of the movie, in which the fatcat shareholders discuss the possibility of the movie becoming true. Very amusing. And I can just imagine them double-tipping their waiters, for a couple of weeks.

On the other hand, it's not going to happen. Ultimately, we are grounded by our families, if nothing else. We all have parents and children and teachers and policemen and clergy members that we love and couldn't just chuck into the midden along with the rubble of civilization.

Still, it doesn't hurt to daydream. Clam chowder, anyone?

Respectfully,

zoid

the movie is not the Series. Only the facts have been changed, to irritate the innocent; the names of the actors and characters remain the same

I don't know.

I don't care, beyond that, @least the first time, I don't want to hear anyone talking during the BDM.

I'm sure I'll go with friends @least once on opening weekend, probably once during the second week, and maybe during the third week. I mean, I'm sure I'll go all three weeks, just not sure about the company.

Who I take, will depend on where I am in September.

If I'm home in Missouri, I'll take my family (wife and two Browncoat kids), and at least 4 friends who are now hooked on the show.

If I'm working out in LA, I'll go with two of my production partners, who are already Joss fans and recient converts to Firefly, and the two leads in our film, who are also fans of the show.

Hopefully, between now and the premere, I'll be able to convert more friends into Browncoats.

That should be a challenge to all of us, to recruit at least two new Browncoats into the Firefly/Serenity fold before the movie comes out. No matter how Universal promotes the film, ultimately the future of this franchise will be in our hands (as it always has been). We can make a difference.

I'd given some thought to movin' off the edge -- not an ideal location -- thinkin' a place in the middle.

I have every intention of making Serenity a family outing. My brother and I have a pact that if the movie is good we must go see it at least three times.

I am intentionally going to go alone the first time around so I am not obliged to talk to anyone at any stage during the show.

Subsequent viewings will be with family, friends and any strangers I can coax in.

I'm dragging my wife along. We made a deal when I went with her to watch Bridget Jones.

"I'm only coming with you to see that if you come with me to Serenity."

She won't go on her own, so the deal was done.

Might see if I can persuade my sons to come along as well.

Well, I don't agree with the allegory either: the economic damage that would do would be global and devestating and guess what: the rich wouldn't suffer too badly. Granted, they'd miss the odd ivory plated backscratcher but it's always going to be the little guy that catches it in the pants.

I don't think it works very well as a movie either. Still, at least it was intelligent and thought provoking, as was Moulin Rouge, another Fox release of the same time. But then neither got instant dollars at the box office and so the people who commissioned them got the boot before the DVD payout began.

Besides, they've already turned Fight Club into a merchandising movie, just like Star Wars. How counter culture can you be?

Sorry, I'm hijacking threads again. Who do I think I am, Malicious?

I'm going to watch it with as many people as I can talk in to going. I don't care how many times I have to see it to complete that task either.

Zoid:

It doesn't matter whether or not anyone would care enough to re-watch the recordings. They would still be there, for a certain amount of time until they turn to dust (like spores in a sandstorm... )

What you say about accepting the hum drumness of life does make a certain amount of sense, but I'm still clinging to my imminent fame... it's just around the corner.

TJ63:

I admire the sacrifice you were willing to make for Serenity.

When I think of an interesting signature you'll be the first to know.
