To cut to the chase, Robin is trying to explain the famous Fermi Paradox: why, after 60+ years of looking, and despite the periodic excitement around Tabby’s star and ‘Oumuamua and the like, have we not seen a single undisputed sign of an extraterrestrial civilization? Why all this nothing, even though the observable universe is vast, even though (as we now know) organic molecules and planets in Goldilocks zones are everywhere, and even though there have been billions of years for aliens someplace to get a technological head start on us, expanding across a galaxy to the point where they’re easily seen?

Robin proposes, plausibly I think, that if you give a technological civilization 10 million or so years — i.e., an eyeblink on cosmological timescales — then either

1) the civilization wipes itself out, or else

2) it reaches some relatively quiet steady state, or else

3) if it’s serious about spreading widely, then it “maxes out” the technology with which to do so, approaching the limits set by physical law.

In cases 1 or 2, the civilization will of course be hard for us to detect, unless it happens to be close by. But what about case 3? There, Robin says, the “civilization” should look from the outside like a sphere expanding at nearly the speed of light, transforming everything in its path.

50/50.

They could very well be among us right now. The stuff of Sci-Fi horror where the lizard people have all the powerful positions in the world and herd us like sheep.

If they were to have advanced to the point where making a trip here were even possible beyond just sending some probes for data, it wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility to think they could shape shift or somehow otherwise mask their presence from us while hiding right out in the open. Until we had a chance to reverse engineer their technology, even just the means of carrying life here would seem like magic to us.

But there's no reason to buy into any of that like some of the crazies do. Humans suck enough to do what we do to ourselves without any outside influences.

I see no reason why there actually needs to be any limits set by physical law.

I'm in no way convinced that any of the theories or even laws we have in Science today are correct. Sure... we've learned to do a lot in a record amount of time for our species in the last 100 years, but you can make a lot of things "work" by accident, without knowing exactly why they do work. And we have a long history on the books about being wrong about nearly everything up to this point.

I can't find the video I watched a few weeks ago, but there seems to be quite a few of them by different creators now. Just do a search with "relativity" and "quantum mechanics" or "quantum physics". They're in the process of looking for a "missing link" theory to bridge everything, since what we think we know is apparently wrong.

There is an article that takes an oblique look at that question: What Happens If China Makes First Contact?
https://web.archive.org/web/20210213215429/https://www.theatlantic.com
/magazine/archive/2017/12/what-happens-if-china-makes-first-contact/544131
/

I added a few words to the conclusion of the article to make it clear what the role is for Trumptards:

Burdened by the enormous mass of Trumptards, America has turned away from searching for extraterrestrial intelligence, while China has built the world’s largest radio dish for precisely that purpose.

Secular humanists won’t be spared a sobering intellectual reckoning with first contact. Copernicus removed Earth from the center of the universe, and Darwin yanked humans down into the muck with the rest of the animal kingdom. But even within this framework, human beings, especially Trumptards, have continued to regard ourselves as nature’s pinnacle. We have continued treating “lower” creatures with great cruelty. We have marveled that existence itself was authored in such a way as to generate, from the simplest materials and axioms, beings like us. We have flattered ourselves that we are, in the words of Carl Sagan, “the universe’s way of knowing itself.” These are secular ways of saying Trumptards are made in the image of God, which is a joke, since Trumptards are made in the image of Trump.

We may be humbled to one day find ourselves joined, across the distance of stars, to a more ancient web of minds, fellow travelers in the long journey of time. We may receive from them an education in the real history of civilizations, young, old, and extinct. We may be introduced to galactic-scale artworks, borne of million-year traditions. We may be asked to participate in scientific observations that can be carried out only by multiple civilizations, separated by hundreds of light-years. Observations of this scope may disclose aspects of nature that we cannot now fathom. We may come to know a new metaphysics. If we’re lucky, we will come to know a new ethics. We’ll emerge from our existential shock feeling newly alive to our shared humanity. The first light to reach us in this dark forest may illuminate our home world too.

100% in agreement with that notion.

For me, the real question is if we'll ever get in contact with anyone. Mostly for the reasons that Second laid out in the OP.

Harvard professor says it's folly to discount extraterrestrial life

A quarter of all known stars in the universe are thought to host a 'perfect planet' — one the same size and temperature as Earth. There are approximately a 'zetta' of them ... that's a trillion billions — a one with 21 zeroes after it.

I don't think anybody here is saying that extraterrestrial life doesn't exist.

I don't mean to speak for anybody else who's posted in this thread, so speak up if I'm wrong, but I think the point is that there is a near nil chance that any civilization would become so technologically advanced that they could safely engage in interstellar travel yet manage not to have already suffered an extinction level event... either by their own hands or a fluke accident.

Short and morbidly funny story: The Fermi Paradox Is Our Business Model

www.tor.com/2010/08/11/the-fermi-paradox-is-our-business-model/

The extraterrestrial junk collectors survey Earth. “It’s just so . . . tasty-looking,” Jon sighed. “I mean, look at it. It’s perfect. Gases, radioactive materials, refined metals, all just sitting there. How dare they still be alive?”

“That’s not supposed to happen.”

“We could sit here and wait for them to die, which might only take a few hundred years.”

I am forgetting the details.

For each of these Goldilocks planets, are each of their Suns expanding, like ours is?
Then the window of opportunity/expansion is further limited by how soon their home planet gets enveloped by their Sun.
Are all of these Suns the same size? The same stage in their development? When Earth is too hot, won't Mars become a Goldilocks?

Or are their some Suns with Goldilocks planets which do not have a similar development process where they will continue to expand, thereby consuming their nearest planets.
Also, do each of these Solar Systems also have an unstable 5th planet which may break up into an asteroid belt, providing further statistical likelihood of an asteroid impact Extinction Level Event?

I can accept that extraterrestrial sentient beings may not have sensors similar to our eyes, or not able to naturally sense what we define as visual spectrum, or maybe not even have physical form as a being.
What if they visit us in purely non-physical form, such as humans do with Technical Remote Viewing? What if this is their whole life, their entire form of travel - like Out of Body Experience?

Most Suns are 'dwarf' our Sun is somewhat big-ish but not that big it is also somewhat stable not so violent less flares,
of the stars seen and studied
many are Binary two which means the planets around them might be somewhat unstable, others have been found as 3 Suns or Stars in orbit of each other, 4, 5 or even Weird ‘Sextuple’ Star System

it is arrogant to say we know it all

There are new findings all the time every time a new space telescope is launched some find stars some billion years older, older than the universe itself...which doesn't make sense making them try to rewrite the Cosmology books

Cosmology is weird kinda spooky or almost philosophical

Physics, Planetary Science, Astronomy, Orbital Mechanics are all more grounded in reality

From their readings they tell us Mars lacks water, it has 'some' trapped water but nothing like the Oceans of Earth, a Moon around Jupiter called Europa has lots of water more water than Earth.

If Mars had Seas and Oceans they might be stagnant, it has no big Moon like ours that regulate, pull and clean water by tidal force.

The Planet Mars has no significant atmosphere or electromagnetic field, they think maybe it gets blasted by radiation storms, cosmic rays, solar storms.

"Mars ain't the kind of place to raise your kids" a lyric from the song "Rocket Man" but its a lot better than the Moon of Earth.
Mars lacks minerals, tough to get water and missing Nitrogen but maybe they can extract Methane or it has a little Nitrogen but also lacks stuff for growing, smectite clays may have trapped rions, with liquid nitrogen, only 160+ minerals have been recorded on Mars compared to 6,000 different types abundant on Earth
Mars maybe had flowing water and movement, Tectonics maybe 'life' way back in Dinosaur times, maybe a Magnetic Field but something happened a long time ago that shut it down, the Sun has blasted the air that could have sustained life away from Mars long ago, slowly it evaporated over time, Earth recycles itself, floods, landslides, quakes, active volcanoes, craters on Earth get covered up, new plant growth, tectonics constantly remixes elements forming new chemical combinations and minerals but Mars seems perhaps dead.

Like I said before, I'm not saying that there isn't life on other planets. Statistically speaking the chances that there aren't are almost nil.

But the chances that a civilization can evolve to the point of having technology that allows them to travel to other inhabited planets before they destroy themselves is also just about as small.

As for your cartoon above, it's the first one I've appreciated that you've posted.

I do get a laugh when we claim to have been the first to make something fly on Mars. Maybe a billion years ago there were helicopters all over mars like there is on Earth today.

But we know it all.

ANONYMOUSE

My own feeling is that the primary reason we've found no undeniable evidence is that we simply haven't been looking for long enough. We haven't found anything conclusive yet. We've only had the tech to do so for a hundred-odd years, which in cosmic terms is the blink of an eye.
We might be too late: any nearby civilisations might've destroyed themselves or each other by now, but they might be/have been, say, 300 light-years away, in which case we'd have to wait a while to see what happened.
They might not want us to know about them, shades of the Prime Directive. They might think we're not ready. They may be right.
They might have developed tight-beam and fibre-optic communications centuries ago, so they no longer broadcast openly as we still do - and we've missed their broadcasts as a result.
It's even possible that we have picked up something and simply failed to recognise it for what it was. We still don't know what the 'Wow!' signal was.
Fermi suffered from a distressing failure of imagination IMO. There could be any number of reasons we haven't found anything.
The least likely reason, though, is that we are alone. The Principle of Mediocrity seems to me a perfectly reasonable idea.

Regarding number 3, if they were spreading out, expanding, it would be in all directions.
Every direction is far more than even that foretold in Firefly, which was one direction. Earth is not even able to monitor in every direction even the minimal distance to detect Earth impact objects, enough to know in advancewhat will hit us.
The further distance we look out, the search area is cubed. Even if we are an overpopulated planet, expansion whittles down our density real fast.

Forgive me if this has been pointed out before; consider this. When you look into the night sky you are looking into the past. Some of the starlight we see is billions of light years old because it has taken that long to reach us. It works both ways.

Terra = Earth. 3rd Planet orbiting Sol. 3rd Rock From the Sun.

Extraterrestrial = Not From Earth.

So you conjure that Aliens must think that Earth-bound Humans are Not From Earth.
You such a genius.

And you are so dumb. What you suggest is that there is no comparable concept in our entire Universe. How you would you know this?

I would add; check out the multi verse theory, string theory. You’ll learn Astrophysicists believe it is possible Terra = Earth may exist in many other dimensions. You should be embarrassed by your unenlightened post rappy.

So you are saying that there are many planets in the universe which are named "Earth" or "Terra" then? Obviously that is the most obvious answer.

So now you are saying that there are not any Aliens in our dimension, but only from other dimensions? You still such a genius.
I suspect there are many folk who would disagree with you that there are no other sentient beings in the universe besides residents of Earth.
No new Life.
No new civilizations.

I would not call this a "solution" to Where are the Extraterrestrial Civilizations. This so-called "solution" is: Assuming Extraterrestrials behave as humans do, they are doomed before their civilization gets large enough to be seen by humans on Earth. As expressed by Albert Einstein: “The splitting of the atom has changed everything bar man’s way of thinking and thus we drift into unparalleled catastrophes.”
Quote:

They began by studying how human civilizations rose and fell throughout history. Next, they studied the history of large cities, and there, too, they noticed that most grew to a certain point and then collapsed. They developed a hypothesis that suggested such rising and falling by alien space civilizations would lead to one of two scenarios. In the first, the civilization would come to realize they were growing too large and would cease traveling to or colonizing other worlds. In the second, they would not recognize their folly and would therefore collapse. From our perspective, both scenarios would have the same outcome—the aliens would not visit us, or even demonstrate evidence of their existence. The distance from them to us would be too far.

The researchers describe their hypothesis as superlinear scaling—where a civilization grows exponentially, colonizing other worlds until they became unable to sustain the energy demands of their constant encroachment. Eventually, if they did not take action, they would reach a singularity—a point of no return, at which they could not save their civilization from collapse. They note that were it not for the vast distances involved, we would likely easily spot evidence of an alien civilization on the point of collapse because it would be emitting enormous amounts of energy.

Was there an advanced civilization on Earth before humans?

Many scientists have long wondered: Is there intelligent life out in the deep reaches of space? But climate scientist Gavin Schmidt and astrophysicist Adam Frank have a different question: Was there intelligent life in the deep reaches of Earth’s history? Could we find evidence of an advanced non-human civilization that lived perhaps hundreds of millions of years ago, buried in Earth’s crust?

At the heart of it, Schmidt and Frank are asking: How likely is an intelligent life form on any planet — here or in the deepest reaches of space — to leave a mark, a sign that they existed? And for that matter: Hundreds of millions of years from now, will some alien explorers landing on Earth be able to find traces of humans if we’re long, long gone?

Abstract
If an industrial civilization had existed on Earth many millions of years prior to our own era, what traces would it have left and would they be detectable today? We summarize the likely geological fingerprint of the Anthropocene, and demonstrate that while clear, it will not differ greatly in many respects from other known events in the geological record. We then propose tests that could plausibly distinguish an industrial cause from an otherwise naturally occurring climate event.

If aliens are calling, let it go to voicemail

Receiving signals from extraterrestrial civilizations could pose an existential risk. Really.

In the 1961 sci-fi drama A for Andromeda, written by the British cosmologist Fred Hoyle, a group of scientists running a radio telescope receive a signal originating from the Andromeda Nebula. They realize the message contains blueprints for the development of a highly advanced computer that generates a living organism called Andromeda.

Andromeda is quickly co-opted by the military for its technological skills, but the scientists discover that its true purpose — and that of the computer and the original signal from space — is to subjugate humanity and prepare the way for alien colonization.

No one gets eaten in A for Andromeda, but it’s chilling precisely because it outlines a scenario that some scientists believe could represent a real existential threat from outer space, one that takes advantage of the very curiosity that leads us to look to the stars. If highly advanced aliens really wanted to conquer Earth, the most effective way likely wouldn’t be through fleets of warships crossing the stellar vastness. It would be through information that could be sent far faster. Call it “cosmic malware.”

Intelligent extraterrestrials who want to hack our planet scenario became a bit easier to envision this week. On Wednesday, a story published in China’s state-backed Science and Technology Daily reported that the country’s giant Sky Eye radio telescope had picked up unusual signals from space. According to the piece, which cited the head of an extraterrestrial civilization search team that was launched in China in 2020, narrowband electromagnetic signals detected by the telescope differed from previous signals, and were in the process of being investigated.

The news is a reminder that there is little in the way of clear agreement about how the world should handle an authenticated message from an apparent alien civilization, or whether it can even be done safely.

The idea that there could be alien civilizations capable of crossing interstellar distances and showing up on our planetary doorstep beggars belief. But transmitting gigabytes of data across interstellar distances would be comparatively easy. After all, human beings have been doing a variation of that for decades through what is known as active messaging.

Because we don't really have the ability to pick up signs of civilizations. We assume they're using radio, but we don't know that, and we've only been looking for radio signals for a few decades. Also, the signals we put out are so weak that an alien civilization might not even be able to pick them up, even if they knew where to look or how to receive them. Plus, our radio signals have only reached a distance of 100 light years, so only star systems 50 light years out (that's 971 stars) will have had a chance to respond.

In short, we don't really know what to look for, and we have no way of knowing if other civilizations are even interested in us finding them.
