One of the things The Whed' has stated a fondness for as far as Firefly is concerned is the down to earth, "little-guy" mentality. There's a recurring quote in the Big Blue Bar Type Thing that states FF chronicles the lives of those history stepped on.

But I notice there is a viewpoint among Browncoats, which I intermittently share depending on how I'm feeling, that the show's story would eventually turn to more epic "time to save the 'verse" pursuits.

How many fanfics have you seen that make allusions to a Second Alliance War?

What are your feelings on this?

I can't see it happening. You can't take these characters and have them win without killing who they are. If Mal was all of a sudden on the winning side would he still be the same person? I don't think so. Firefly to me has never been about the war for independence or the reavers or anything other than the characters. The characters are what drive the show. Destroying who they are for a story arc isn't of the good IMO.

I think that there would probably have been more far-reaching and long-storied things afoot eventually. But if there WAS to be a Second War of Alliance, I think it would be at the very end of the show, when they were packing it up, and I also think it would be left hanging, without telling us which side of the war comes out on top this time (sort of like the end of "Angel").

I respectfully disagree, Zeek. I think that the loss of Mal's faith and willingness to fight for what he believed in are the key to his character. In the episodes we got, we were viewing Mal at one of his lowest points, morally speaking. If the series had continued, I believe the continuing atrocities that Mal witnessed from the Alliance (discovering what happened to River, and how widespread that inhuman program is, for example) would have rekindled his passion to fight back.

I envisioned the show eventually becoming similar to "Blake's 7", with Mal leading his own form of guerilla warfare armed with his rag-tag crew and a belief in what is right. Now, as far as Mal being on the "winning side", that is less certain - after all, look at what happened to the characters of "Blake's 7"!

Hopefully if we get a trilogy of films, we'll be able to see at least the gist of what Joss would have done with the series.

Well, for a while, I was toying with an idea about the SERENITY crew being an integral part to a revolution that would've brought a collapse to the Alliance. But I've been a bit busy with school and all to get into it.

But as for it happening in one of the movies, or if the tv show kept on going, I think it could've happened. But I agree that it would've been near the end of the show's run. Personally, I think what would've happened is that the Alliance government system would've collapsed on it's own. If the show is partially about history and how it repeats itself, then it only would've been natural that the Alliance would've caved in on itself due to inflation, corruption and inefficiency, like pretty much every empire over the course of human history.

But as for Mal, I imagine that he loved flying and his crew so much that even if there was a second Alliance War and the Browncoats won, or if the Alliance system collapsed overnight, they'd all still be flying.
