New on DVD: the shows you didn't watch last year

Are you ready to save the new television show "The Inside"? Ready to join all the e-mail drives, boycotts and letter campaigns to demand that this quirky, intelligent show be kept on the air? OK, granted, "The Inside" won't actually debut for two more months or so, but having seen how the Fox Network operates I figured starting the petitions early would just save time.

Alas, it's doomed from the start. "The Inside" is being produced by Tim Minnear, co-producer and writer for such weird and wonderful shows as "Angel" (canceled too soon), "Firefly" (canceled even sooner), and "Wonderfalls" (canceled almost before the opening credits). So you know he'll bring some familiar faces to both sides of the camera and it'll be witty, surprisingly dramatic, and almost impossible to describe.

See? Doomed. But I'm not worried because I've finally figured out Fox's cunning plan: obviously they want people to stop watching television altogether. It's a radical method of beating the other networks once and for all, in a we'll-all-go-down-together sort of way, but it's the only possible answer.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Great article!

Loved what the writer had to say about Firefly. Guess Browncoats were not the only ones to notice how poorly Fox handled Firefly.

I get the impression that the writer is a Browncoat, whether they know it or not.

This is an excellent article that everyone should read. It gives me an idea: We Browncoats, who seem to be a generally intelligent lot, should start a new tv network. We could exclusively program it with all the great shows cancelled by F*x over the last few years (and in the future). It would immediately have the best line-up of any network and would blow all the other networks away. Imagine Firefly, John Doe, Keen Eddie, Wonderfalls, Futurama, Greg the Bunny, The Tick, Brisco County, Jr., etc., etc. as a weekly programing line-up....

Apathy on the Rise. No One Cares.

Wow, I feel so validated right now. I hope the people at FOX all received a hard copy of this article. Preferably framed. They could hang it on their necks in shame.

Here here. Except 'validated' is what I think we all felt when we heard our BDHs were going to the big screen.

What a great article. Not just because it touches a subject close to my heart (although of course that helps), but also it's very sharp, well written, without being whiney.

The writer is obviously a fan of Firefly, maybe a Browncoat, but s/he doesn't sound like an obsessive. He singles out Firefly, but talks about all the other great series too.

As a result of reading this, I'm really looking forward to seeing "Inside" now. I don't knowif it will be shown over here in the UK, if not I'll snap it up on DVD as soon as it is released.

I wonder if the people at Fox do read these things? They don't seem to take any notice if they do.

It will be interesting to see if his prediction is true, won't it?

Hi, I'm the writer. Call me a lurking Browncoat. I've been registered here awhile but don't post much, although I did post my picture of Jewel last year: http://www.fireflyfans.net/sunroomitem.asp?i=1342 . I've shoved my Firefly set at everyone within reach and sent copies to friends around the country as presents and outright bribes. And I bought my Serenity patch!

I appreciate the offer of marriage, but my wife might object. Unless you can cook. And enjoy really creative housework.

You probably don't want me cooking for you, unless you really like steak and cheese hotpockets. What would really creative housework entail?

Thanks for the article CABridges. You so eloquently wrote what all us Browncoats think of Fox and their inept handling of quality programming.

I just knew you were a Browncoat when I read the article.

Keep up all those conversion efforts. Keep Flyin'!

In our house, a backhoe...

You know how some fans collect action figuresd and toys and dolls and cool dragon stuff and odd clothing and whatnot, and they have special cabinets and shelves to display them?

That's us, except without the display part. Mostly they just heap.

What a great article - thanks CA. I was looking at the list of other shows there and a great many of which I watched. Some of the others didn't get picked up in the UK though. You think you have a problem with them ping ponging the timeslots all over the place - the ping pong some things to different channels over here. No warnig either. 24 started out on BBC2 then moved to Sky One, Alias started on Sky One and moved to Bravo - no advertisng needless to say. I discovered the last season by accident. Farscape too, it went from BBC2 to Scify who promptly cancelled it. Figures. So I suppose I too will have to buy this new show on DVD when it arrives.

Just to pick up on mrskborg's points about UK showings of TV shows: 24 was shown by BBC 3/2 but Fox announced that they were terminating the BBC's option to show it as they were now broadcasting "in the clear" on Sky. What actually happened was Sky One's ratings have been plummeting post Buffy/Angel and so they needed a hit show and pulled strings with their sister company. Alias was never a hit on Sky so they sold the rights on to Five and it wasn't a hit there so they sold the rights on to Bravo. The BBC still retain repeat rights for Farscape (though not the Peacekeeper Wars, Sky One outbid them) and are starting a complete set of repeats on BBC 3, starting from this Monday, just after midnight. If you haven't seen the show, now's your chance.

CABridges, I don't know if your site tracks hits but you got a reference from BBC Cult http://www.bbc.co.uk/cult/news/cult/2005/02/04/16858.shtml which will probably have sent tens of thousands of hits on to your paper's site.

See, the BBC know what they're doing.

That's cool that the BBC linked to it. More publicity for Firefly!
