Firefly fans, known as Browncoats, will donate coats and jackets to the less fortunate across the United States and Canada on 25 January 2003. Shellgazer is running the drive.

Details can be found below and at http://www.immantcreative.com/fireflysos/browncoat.htm

Copied from Shellgazer's post on the Fox forum:
"We are looking for the following:

*City/Regional Coordinators*
These folks will be responsible for coordinating donations at a local level. This means they will receive a list of volunteers in their area and will have the responsibility of tallying donations. Local coordinators will also find the most appropriate venue for the donations. They will also act as local media contacts, (press releases will be provided).

If you live in a town of 557 people, and you think you are the only person who will donate, volunteer anyway :).

Regional Coordinators Have Already Volunteered for the Following Areas:

--U.S.--
Phoenix, AZ
Albuquerque, NM
Portland, OR
Dayton, OH
Northeastern, OH
Richmond, VA
Raleigh-Durham, NC
Charlotte, NC
Vancouver,WA
Seattle, WA
Tri-Cities, in Washington State (known separately as Richland, Pasco, and Kennewick. Also included in this area would be Benton City, West Richland, Finley, and Burbank.)
Boston, MA

--Canada--
Toronto

*Volunteers*
If you have a coat to donate (or have plenty of disposable income and will buy a coat to donate) please respond in this thread with your name, city, and state.

People have been wanting to do more, so here's your chance. If you have any questions, you can post them in this thread or email them to me (I am usually available 7:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. Eastern Time) or PhysicsChick (she in in the Pacific Time Zone).

Thanks, in advance, for your generous donation of time.

Hey, if anyone has questions about the coat drive, I'll try and answer them. Or you can email Shell directly.

I'm coordinating Boston--I'll have a drop-off location confirmed shortly for the area.

We have local Salvation Army sponsored coat drives before Christmas every year and I donated four coats last month. Can I attach myself retroactively to the brown coat drive?

I'm in Columbia, South Carolina.

Maybe we could pad the numbers! But in SC they might be donating more than just coats, too, so you should email the South Carolina coordinator. I know up here I'm asking people to also donate other warm clothes and accessories.

Go to the site below and click on "Charleston, SC". Though I'm not sure how close (or not) Charleston and Raleigh are!

About 350 miles apart! I'm only 100 miles from Charleston. The closest of the sites is actually Charlotte, NC.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

I am cooridinating the Richmond, VA area.

This is a great idea, and being done for worthy causes. Hopefully it will draw the necessary attention to get some people to take notice of the show.

Took me a while to catch up to this thread...information about the coat drive is spreading all over the web :).

I applaud your generous donation in December, but don't think it would be fair to retroactively count the four coats you donated in the tally for the national Brown Coat Drive. We are just counting the coats/clothing donated on 25 January 2003. Exceptions are from people who donated this week and email us, letting us know they couldn't do it Saturday for whatever reason.

Our main goal is to help the less fortunate in communities all over North America, not just have a huge final number at the end of the drive with which to dazzle the press.

Keeping Firefly fandom visible is a secondary goal, but we will accomplish that even if we have a national tally of only 500 donations.

What we *can* do, to acknowledge your donation (and others like it), is mention that many fans had already donated within local communities, but that we had no way to track those numbers.

Your interest in the coat drive is really appreciated!

$20 and change w/ 6 days left. Not too shabby. Too bad it will get far too expensive for my taste. Want one, but don't want to have to sell a kidney to get one.

Seems all of the Firefly merchandise on Ebay is going for top dollar lately.

I have some cool stuff on ebay, I am donating all profits to the coat drive (actually Purple Heart or the Salvation Army, local charities here) even though it has offically ended, its spirit lives on. I have raised $300 so far.

I have a few of each item left and then it's really all over. :o(
