Just been listening again to the episode commentary of Serenity - At the point where we see Badger for the 1st time, Nathan mentions that Joss was planning on playing the character but Joss pipes up and says that they found a much more prettier man(!) for the role `Mark Shepherd`. The actor does a great job for a small part.

Do you think Joss would have been good playing the part of Badger?

or is there somebody else that would have been just as good as MS?

Joss(numfar) would have been good, but Mark Shepherd is perfect!

Love Mark Shepherd as Rat, think he did a great job. Joss is great, but I think this was Shepherd's role.

Keep shiny!

Depends; would he have done the accent?

One thing I cannot condone the Whed of is the comedic "Oliver! The Musical" accents adopted by the "Brittish" characters!

I was ready to give Summer Glau the part of "Flower Girl No.5" after her turn in Shindig!

And Wesley and Giles from the Buffyverse; Nobody in Britain uses the expression "Blast!" to convey annoyance! Not now, and probably not ever!

I'd like to think it would have worked, but I can't imagine anyone but Sheppard as Badger.

Similarly, no one in Canada ends their sentences with "eh?"

Don't think so. I mean, I love Joss but I don't think he could bring the sudden switch from humour to menace that Mark Shepherd brings.

The scene at the beginning of Shindig when Badger calls to Mal to have the meeting and he says 'I'm sorry, did you think you had a choice?' - the menace there is just fantastic, and I don't think anyone could have done better.

Hawk Stated:
>And Wesley and Giles from the Buffyverse; Nobody >in Britain uses the expression "Blast!" to >convey annoyance! Not now, and probably not ever!

..and in one of those weird moments of synchroicity.. I shouted 'BLAST AND BOTHERATION' about 5 seconds before opening this thread.
I hadn't used the word in about 15 years though!

It is hard to imagine anyone else playing Badger now, simply because I have watched the episodes so many times. Mark Shepherd fits the role perfectly.

It's kinda like how my friend Laura asked me the other day whether she looked like a Laura. Of course she does thats her name! Did that make sense?

I say 'blast' all the time! And 'okey dokey'. I was told yesterday that no one has said okey dokey for 20 years! Ahh well.

I dont think Joss would have worked as Badger...as much as I would like to see him in a role. As other people in this thread have mentioned, the Badger character is intimidating..or at least trying to be. The actor that plays him isnt the biggest guy or anything but he does a good job with it. I just dont think Joss could be intimidating (other than intellectually) because of his voice. He doesnt lisp..but its kinda close. *sorry Joss*

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Not sure how well Joss would have done w/ the Badger role, and I guess at this point we never will. Still, it would have been something to see.

I can't see Joss in that role or any role really. Just from all the interviews and commentaries I've seen/heard of him he just couldn't be anyone but Joss in my mind. The whole time he'd be on screen I'd always be thinking that this is Joss pretending to be someone else. That's not the impression an actor should give off. You should believe they are who they are supposed to be on screen. At least that's what I think good actors do.

I don't know where you are from Hawk (England or whatever) but I thought River did a very good job on the accent. Was it really that bad?
