I saw some posts on this recently and meant to add my bit, but of course now I can’t find it again…

anyway, the gist was that people were discussing where the name ‘Reavers’ came from.
Just wanted to say that ‘Reivers’ (different spelling, same pronunciation) is a Scottish word; it means the people on the border who used to carry out raids, raping, pillaging, burning and so on and so forth: the Border Reivers. A good fit, no?

It hadn’t actually occurred to me to think of ‘Reaver’ as meaning anything else… though there was some interesting discussion going on in that other thread.

That’s the border between Scotland and England, of course, but you knew that.

... and that's not to mention their impact on Irish history or given Reiver family names like Armstrong, Nixon, Johnson, Graham, on US history too.

YT

the movie is not the Series. Only the facts have been changed, to irritate the innocent; the names of the actors and characters remain the same

Thanks, PB, for the links.

okay, I posted this a while back, but I am stubborn enough not to give up on an idea once I've had it (though I have added Natalie Portman films to my DVDs-I'll-be-watching-soon list due to some attempts to change my ideas from fireflyfans:) ). Reivers might be a bit different from reavers, but I still think that's where the word and maybe the idea comes from.

Though, having seen the preview (don't worry, no spoilers) I might be wronger.

Anyway, here is a link to a reiver festival: celebrate the pillage! (Weird idea?)

(The original website isn't very interesting, it's just this one article):

CALIGARI

Someone directly asked Joss this very question at Wondercon, to which he said he had never heard of the Scottish pillagers. Later that same panel he said the idea of the Reavers was basically that of the Indians in old Westerns, a group of mysterious people that knew the land better than the cowboys, and had strange, savage customs, from which horror stories of raiding parties came. Joss said he just removed the racial element and kept the horror and mystery.
