I was surprised at the lack of this around the place generally, I thought there would have been more on elfwood at least. Has Wheadon instigated some sort of "copyright breach" on it? I was aware that Anne McAffry did this a while back and Warner Brothers attempted to curb the Harry Potter stuff on the web. This surpises me as if no one is profiting from fan fic/art, blocking its production serves to really piss of fans.

Firefly artists are very active and have produced art work in a variety of media - vids, fics, poems, pictures, computer graphics etc.

There are lots of Firefly sites, so the work tends to be a bit scattered. On this site it is held in the Blue Sun Room.

Joss and Co. are actually very supportive of fan participation, if -- oddly -- somewhat unforthcoming with the digital bits from the long-awaited Serenity. Mostly, we've got to make do with a handful of new pictures, or tons of dated and overharvested stuff from the series.

I'm a little dismayed at this lack of new source, particularly on the NOB, which is owned/operated by Universal, and contains no new material. Giving us 'guerilla marketers' some new, quality digital stock -- and even though the movie is action-packed, surely there's some non-spoilery still frames available -- seems to make the best possible sense from a marketing standpoint. I frankly expected it; it just hasn't materialized and I'll be hanged if I can figure out why it hasn't.

Oh, well, I guess we'll just have to wait until the trailer hits theaters attached to "The Hichhiker's Guide to the Universe", shortly, and then get it from the usual 'unofficial sources'...

If you click on peoples names, you will be able see a list of everything that they have posted in the `Bluesun room` - for instance if you click on my name

you find that there`s quite a lot of wallpapers and images.

As for videos, you can do searches, I have a few (not done by myself) but I wouldn`t want to repost without the creators permission.

Unless it's a commercial product, academic rules should apply: use a source, attribute the originator. As long as you properly cite the original maker -- even if you've made substantial revisions -- you should be on good ethical and moral grounds (at least, good enough for collegiate theses, wherein one does not receive written permission to cite).

Most amateur artists are happy to have their works appreciated and distributed in such fashion, as long as they are properly credited for their work.

If 'fanart' materials are freely available (i.e., not being licensed), permission should not be required, only attribution...

P.S.
So post away; just be sure and state that it's someone else's work, by name/handle. For instance, if one right-clicks the Serenity Countdown widget I recently created, and selects the 'About...' item, a box appears that attributes not only the original creator of the code, but a previous adapter, as well. It only says "Adapted for Browncoat Army by zoid". I sleep perfectly well.

I think you`ve got some of that wrong,

you should at least try to contact the person who created the art in whatever form and where it is intended to go (for instance, I might have a piece of artwork and it`s reposted to a porn site - how would I know or object?) - there was a link on Fireflyfans.net about artwork theft - being reposted to another site wiothout the artists permission which was causing some upset.

Most people will ask (and I have been in the past) if something is okay to host or repost.

Please respect others artwork and check 1st before re-posting anything.

Actually, I took part in that discussion (as one who'd experienced an improper appropriation of my original work) and the big deal was that no one was attributed on the new site. Some insisted permission be asked; but, most just didn't like that they were not credited in any way, thereby giving the illusion that the site's creator was presenting original content, without giving due credit.

Re-read that thread; although if you choose to go with a more restrictive personal policy, I've got no problem with that. I've already stated a lucid and defensible practice (i.e., college theses citations without explicit permission), but here's another, along the lines of your outre porn-site example: If an originator's hotmail/yahoo mailbox is dead (certainly, a distinct possibility), does that mean that: A. The source material can never be conscientiously used again?; B. The original creation may be used without proper attribution?

This argument appears to be boiling down to semantics and conscience. I'm an ethical person, not a lawyer, so we'll just say this is about personal comfort-level...
