I know I saw an old thread like this kicking around somewhere, but I'd like to resurrect it. Basically, what features would you like to see on the eventual dvd release of the Big Damn Movie under the Christmas tree? I imagine since the movie will be out in Sept, that the movie might have a rushed DVD release to capitalize on the holiday season.

I have this fantasy that when SERENITY does hit dvd shelves, that it'll be a 2 disc Criterion Collection release. On the one hand, I imagine this might not happen, given the kinds of movies that normally get the Criterion treatment. On the other hand, if they're giving THE LIFE AQUATIC WITH STEVE ZISSOU (which was a mediocre film in comparison to the superb ROYAL TENENBAUMS and probably the weakest film Wes Anderson has done so far) the Criterion treatment, than maybe it's not that big of a stretch.

As for features, I'd like to see at least three commentary tracks. One with just Joss. One with Joss and the entire crew (Nathan, Gina, Alan, Sean, Summer, Jewel, Adam, Morena and Ron). And one with Joss and the D.P., the production designer and maybe a film historian that specializes in sci fi and/or western films.

As for other stuff, I'd like to see a making of featurette done my J.M. Kenny (one of the best dvd feature producers working out there) covering the past history of the show and the making of the film, maybe a separate one on the cult of the show, an fx feature, maybe one on the music, deleted scenes (hopefully an hour in length), gag reel, trailers and the normal stuff.

So would this seem like the dream DVD for all of us?

I want the longest gag reel ever invented. An entire disc if possible. And interviews, from behind the scenes, where everyone is laughing and making fun of each other while the person being interviewed is trying to be serious. I don't mind the commentaries, but I would like to see an option for an MST3K kind of inset picture-in-picture thingy of whoever is doing the commentary.

**ETA: I HOPE I don't have to wish for the Director's Cut--meaning I hope the BDM is exactly what Joss wanted to create. But if not, then I want the Director's Cut.

the movie is not the Series. Only the facts have been changed, to irritate the innocent; the names of the actors and characters remain the same

The DVD will come out six months after cinematic release of the movie, just like every other.

If the BDM is a success, as we all hope & expect it will be, Criterion probably won't pay for the rights to it for about ten years after cinematic release, which is more their style.

I hope something like that becomes available, eventually. But I want Universal to make a ton of money on the BDM, and if that means next year's DVD is a single disc, so be it.

I can wait for a 4 or 5 disc set of the trilogy, for all those extra special, special features. If there is one, I'll pass on my individual discs to deserving individuals.

I'd be very surprised (and delighted) if this is anything other than Universal's normal "Collectors Edition" style DVD release. That unfortunately is normally only one disc but there we go. I think it's the HD-DVD/Blu-Ray (sorry, can't remember whose side Universal is on) release we should look forward to most.

What special features that have been on other discs would you like to see on the DVD? Perhaps the entire crew dancing to Thriller a laFinal Fantasy? A revoice option like Shrek? A re-edit feature like Men in Black? Something even more innovative?

First off, movies are getting a shorter and shorter turn-around from theaters to DVD. This because of bootlegging being so easy nowadays.

Secondly, I agree with the idea of Serenity not hitting stores before Christmas. That'd be great, but that's probably why I'm thinking not.

Finally, my wish list for the film is a DVD (2-disc set) containing the theatrical cut of the film and the inevitable extended cut. A nice making of featurette... just one, no seventy-three mini-featurettes explaining several things twice and in many other cases repeating the same behind the scenes footage several times in each mini-featurette. I'm thinking something like "Empire of Dreams" (the doc included with the original Star Wars trilogy) a superb documentary walking through origins, filming, release and fan base. With tons of interviews of the cast.

and of course, a gag reel and audio commentaries...

I believe that no DVD extras package is complete without a very long gag reel and some deleted scenes. Although I'm hoping the deleted scenes won't include anything so good that I'll think "Oh, I wish they'd left that in", cos that's really frustrating.
I'm also counting on a typically witty and insightful commentary by Joss.

What everyone else said.

In addition...

Mandarin track with the swear words in English.

Short clips of Alan Tudyk auditioning for every single role in the BDM.
